Bloomberg is reporting that EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Mark Carney are scheduled to formalize a strategic partnership with details to be delivered during remarks on September 16th.
In the big picture this does not come as a surprise as Prime Minister Mark Carney has called Canada the most European of non-European states. The ideology of the EU bureaucracy in Brussels and the Carney government in Ottawa is in full alignment. Canada yearns to be European in part to help defend the British Commonwealth from the global reset underway by U.S. President Donald Trump.
President Trump is assembling a sovereign global structure where the tentacles of the British commonwealth system are removed. A sovereign USA, China, India, Russia and Saudi Arabia acting independently, albeit with each nation organizing their interests by forming bilateral trade and economic attachments with each other nation.
In essence President Trump is emphasizing ‘Nationalism’ over ‘Globalism’, where the influences of the old, mostly British or colonial systems are removed. In order to combat this strategic reset the U.K commonwealth countries Australia, New Zealand, the British Caribbean states and Canada are organizing themselves into a cluster with the European nations as “middle powers.”
According to the expressed defensive plan outlined by Prime Minister Mark Carney, the totality of the “middle powers” assembly would then be large enough to block the influences of the USA, China, Russia, India or Saudi Arabia.
This new alignment will be interesting against the geopolitical backdrop of the economically aligned G7 or G20 construct. However, there is a big upside. Given the nature of the expressed intent for collective defense and security, there is an immediate opportunity created by the assembly for the United States to exit NATO.
If Canada, Europe and the British Commonwealth nations organize as outlined, they should be entirely capable of defending themselves if needed from China, Russia, India or even the USA. But, then again, this is Europe and Canada we are talking about – both regional populations filled with prose and grand progressive pontifications, yet historically short on actual substance or fortitude. These are, after all, the surrender nations.
A reasonable person would agree that Southeast Asia could kick Europe’s ass in a war, and I seriously doubt the U.K is going to be able to stop the Falkland Islands from going back to Argentina without American help. [Not happening] The Vikings are a serious bunch, but together the Nord’s and the Eastern Europeans are not exactly thrilled with the imported rape-gangs.
Methinks as opposed to trying to take on the Russian and U.S submarine fleets, the Commonwealth and Euros are more likely to break out in a rather colorful civil war first. I admit fully that perspective runs against the grand prose of the Brusselians and British.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend the speech then address European lawmakers the following day.
Carney’s government has made a deeper EU partnership a top priority and is actively looking at everything short of actual membership, said a Canadian official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The discussions are particularly focused on “strategic capabilities,” such as cooperation on defense, space exploration and scientific research.
It’s not clear whether new legal tools would be needed to formalise this partnership, but those discussions are ongoing and Carney’s government will be consulting with Canadian provinces and industries, the official said.
In a remarkable speech at the World Economic Forum earlier this year, Carney warned that the “rules-based international order” was effectively dead and called on so-called middle powers to create a new global architecture to oppose pressure tactics and intimidation by the world’s great powers.
He didn’t mention US President Donald Trump by name but called on new alliances to be the last line of defense against countries that impose their economic and military might at will.
A spokesperson from Carney’s office declined to comment for this story. A spokesperson from the commission didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The contents of von der Leyen’s speech next week are still being drafted and could change before then. (more)

The UK itself has sunk to the level of a “middle power.” Britain was once THE global superpower, with an empire the sun never set upon. It is now a middling level power and declining rapidly – economically, militarily, and culturally.
France and Germany were once Great Powers. They are also only middling powers today.
The whole EU is a confederation of middle powers trying to climb back up into the league of major economies by pooling all their economic weights into a unified single market.

Reorganize NATO into the EU Defense Force and renegotiate security agreements with all non EU countries or suffer the embarrassing, economic, and possibly EU ending, loss of America and maybe others pulling out of NATO.
It is in Europe’s interest to do this deal because it will incentivize other countries to join the EU, modernize all the security in the region, economically bolster the Union, and give the EU credibility for managing it’s own defense.
This deal also removes congress from any decision pulling the US out of NATO because it will no longer exist. It also opens the door to North and South America updating their relationships to focus on our hemisphere. Greenland will be part of the deal and Canada will, well, they will just stay Canada for a while until they realize what they are missing out on.
The bloom has long been off the EU “unstoppable super state” ruse.
The only countries that want to join the EU are poor, unstable, and insecure: Albania, Bosnia, Moldova, and Ukraine. They don’t need any additional incentives. Brussels had their interest at hello.
Iceland recently rejected membership. Norway and Switzerland aren’t interested. France and Germany are dogged by persistent national-populist movements that just won’t go away. The U.K. Brexited ten years ago and is on a collision course with itself.
And as that Bloomberg article clarified, Carney wants deeper ties with the EU “short of actual membership.” Which means Carney has his doubts about the EU too.
As for NATO, that’s another discussion in its own right.
Over the last year I’ve watched how Canada has quietly realligned their internal policies to match those of the EU. As an example, I’d point to the Canada-European Union Green Alliance . Additionally, Canada has turned to the EU for their military purchases and became the first Non-EU member into the EU’s EU’s SAFE Instrument . Canada formally became an associated member of Horizon Europe—the EU’s flagship €95.5 billion scientific research and innovation funding program.
All this is to say that this process began the second Carney stepped into office. And, a lesson was learned during that last trade agreement negotiated between the EU and Canada. France was a hold out for something like a decade because of “environmental standards”. But, that has been remedied by the above listed allignment on Green Policy.
There’s only one piece missing. The legal systems between the EU and Canada are not the same. I would expect covert efforts to change that by Carney in the not too distant future.

Folks on the east coast, and especially west of Manitoba don’t feel that way. The west is a completely different culture than central Cananadum.
Central Cananaduh is older and was settled by Europeans, many of them British “loyalists” that fled the southern “colonies” after the American revolution. The western provinces are descendants of pioneers, trappers, ranchers, prospectors, etc. many from the United States. We vote straight conservative, have a “can-do” attitude, and wish the governments of all flavours would get the hell out of the way.
Unfortunately leftism of all stripes rots the cities even in the west, our left coast is like Portland on steroids. Hating all things American is a hobby horse even in the US so you can only imagine what our deranged leftists are like. I do believe there is a large contingent of the loony left who can’t wait to live in a government approved pod in a government approved 15 minute city and eat the government approved bugs. Pray for us here in Alberta, we are having an opening vote on the question of Alberta sovereignty on Oct 19.

It also would mean the UK’s imminent cession of the Falkland Islands back to Argentina! The days when the British navy ruled the seas is long gone!

Trump’s reset in great for the USA. But it will be 100% reversed if (when) a Democrat is elected president in 2028. It will be 50% reversed if a Republican wins though that is very unlikely.
Trump’s trade and economic reset has almost no support in Congress not even among the majority of Republicans. And Congress would never vote to end NATO.
