“After deep study, careful thought and considerable soul-searching, I have decided I must oppose the agreement and will vote yes on a motion of disapproval,” Schumer wrote in a 1,600-word post on the website Medium.

NEW YORK – New York City has reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner for $5.9 million, almost a year after the 43-year-old died in police custody.

The family filed a notice of claim in October, the first step in filing a lawsuit against the city, asking for $75 million.

Garner was stopped on July 17 outside a convenience store for selling loose cigarettes. A video shows Garner telling the officers to leave him alone and refusing to be handcuffed. Garner is taken to the ground in what appears to be a chokehold, banned by police policy. The officer claimed it was a legal takedown maneuver known as a “seatbelt.”  (read more)

NEW YORK – A $5 million settlement won’t satisfy the heartbroken family of Eric Garner.

A source familiar with ongoing negotiations between Controller Scott Stringer and the family of the Staten Island man killed by an NYPD cop say that his widow, Esaw Garner, turned down the hefty offer last week.

The source said the Garner family’s attorney, Jonathan Moore, is urging the family to accept the $5 million and then seek more money through a separate lawsuit against EMTs from Richmond University Medical Center.

They were captured on video failing to give Garner, 43, medical treatment — neither oxygen nor CPR — as he died at their feet July 17, 2014.

Negotiations are expected to continue until Friday, when a statute of limitations requires the family file a wrongful death lawsuit. The family has said it intends to sue the city for $75 million. (more…)

(New York City) In front of emotional supporters, Mayor de Blasio signed legislation Monday that will prohibit employers from inquiring about a candidate’s criminal record prior to a job offer.

“Today I see hope for people like me,” said Marilyn Scales, 52, of the Bronx, who said she never has had a full-time job because of her record for dealing heroin.

The mayor also signed legislation to step up regulation of the car wash industry. Car washes will have to obtain biannual city licenses as well as a $150,000 bond to cover costs if they are sued for wage theft.  (more)

Early reports are that Sweat was spotted North of Malone NY, and just south of the Canadian border.  He has been shot and captured by law enforcement.  His injuries are described as “life threatening”.

( Via Fox News ) A law enforcement source today confirmed to Fox News that escaped convict Richard Matt has been shot and killed by police.

Matt is one of two prison inmates who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.  Matt’s counterpart David Sweat is still on the run.  Authorities have been pursuing the two escaped killers for 21 days.

Regarding the super security in the New York prison system – This is downright hilarious.

During Fox’s Greta Van Susteren show, “On The Record” Greta was having a split screen conversation with a reporter about the New York prison break.

In the background of the live shot, a man is captured walking across the street with a bag toward the wall of the prison, a rope drops down and the man connects the rope to the bag.  The bag is then hoisted up and over the wall as the man walks nonchalantly away.

On Monday a man assaulted two people in New York with a hammer.
The first victim was a 28-year-old woman struck in the head while she was sitting on a park bench in Union Square. Moments later, he allegedly hit a 33-year-old woman in the head as she was walking down the street. Both victims were treated for their head injuries and released, according to the NYPD.  (media story)

NEW YORK – A Queens ex-con was charged with attempted murder Sunday for shooting an undercover NYPD cop in the head, leaving him clinging to life, officials and sources told The Post.
Plainclothes officer Brian Moore, 25, took a turn for the worse early Sunday after surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, and distraught family members were rushing to his side, sources said.
Moore is the fifth NYPD officer to be shot in as many months.
A four-year department veteran from a police family, Moore was driving with his partner by the intersection of 212th Street and 104th Avenue in Queens Village at around 6:15 p.m. Saturday when the incident occurred.
The pair spotted Demetrius Blackwell, whom they knew to have a long police record, said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.
Blackwell had been fiddling with his waistband, a source said. (more…)
