Volkswagen is a case study in self-destruction as a result of EU ‘climate’ politics and German auto company decision-making. The decision to chase climate policy created European legislation that set quotas, limits and fines on automakers who did not shift to electric vehicles. German automakers then chose to purchase carbon credits from China, who then use those sales to further discount exported EVs into the German market.
Simultaneously, Volkswagen opened up operation in China allowing their technology to be captured by Chinese auto makers who turned around and duplicated the technology at a much lower price. Once the manufacturing was at full speed, China stopped purchasing Volkswagen autos.
The partly state-owned German automaker Volkswagen announced today [SEE HERE] their survival as a company now requires the elimination of 100,000 jobs in Germany with the closure of plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and the Audi site in Neckarsulm. Volkswagen will not be the last German company to suffer this fate as Mercedes is now 20% owned by Chinese EV company Geely.
The German auto workers do not have a choice. They no longer have a solid consumer base for their vehicles, and China continues to export low price EVs into the European market. Every euro in tariffs against Beijing is offset by the euros the auto companies spend purchasing Chinese carbon credits to avoid European fines. They cannot get out of the spiral.
GERMANY – The car company Volkswagen has approved controversial plans to shed 100,000 jobs in a battle for survival as it faces fierce competition from Chinese rivals.
After the latest round of talks this week, the company announced a further 50,000 job cuts and agreed a staggered end to current production at four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and the Audi site in Neckarsulm between 2031 to 2034. There are no specific plans beyond that.
The agreement came as a surprise after a meeting of shareholders, unions, and state representatives on the supervisory board in what was seen as a considerable test for the German carmaker’s chief executive, Oliver Blume.
He had gone as far as to arrange an emergency meeting if the package was rejected in preparation for a potential showdown with unions. (more)
In a directly related report, U.S. auto manufacturers are now urging congress to outright ban Chinese cars from the American market. There are a few auto consumers who don’t like this approach, but it is entirely appropriate.
One of the things Europe will find out is that as soon as China has dominated their auto market, those cheap EVs will no longer be cheap. Once Beijing captures the market, they will slowly start to increase the price extracting the maximum profit in the long-term strategy.
China would do this in North America if we do not protect the auto sector. Ultimately, this is why Prime Minister Mark Carney is going to create a serious problem by allowing the import of Chinese EVs and letting them set up a manufacturing base in Canada.
It’s not just about cars. If you lose your auto industry you erode your manufacturing base, your steel and aluminum production, your capacity to retain industrial engineering skills and many other ancillary aspects – including military. The auto industry represents much more than just the production of consumer cars.
Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and Australian markets have already fallen victim within this geopolitical scheme. Canada is on the cusp of the problem. Readers here are well aware of the scheme {GO DEEP}, and yes, it will take some form of legislative action to protect North America from this problem.
WASHINGTON DC – DETROIT — Major automakers operating in the U.S. are increasing pressure on Congress to permanently ban the domestic sale, import and manufacturing of Chinese connected vehicles, hardware and software.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents the vast majority of companies selling vehicles in the U.S., urged congressional leaders in a Thursday letter to make a move before the end of Congress’ current session on Jan. 3.
“Right now, Chinese automakers are dumping subsidized vehicles with connected software and hardware around the world,” John Bozzella, CEO of the group, said in the letter seen by CNBC. “This hasn’t happened inside the U.S. yet, but given the scale and urgency of this threat, we urge you to enact a Chinese vehicle, software and hardware ban before adjourning this year and make this policy the law of the land.”
Midterm elections are also coming up in November, which could affect Congress’ momentum.
Bozzella’s comments come amid bipartisan efforts in the House and Senate to address Chinese vehicles, including legislation advanced by the Senate Commerce Committee that could bar Mercedes-Benz from the U.S. market because Chinese investors hold nearly 20% of the German automaker.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which includes Mercedes-Benz, said in the Thursday letter that it wants to work with lawmakers to “achieve a balanced policy so all our member companies continue to succeed and thrive inside the U.S.” (read more)

To protect the Western Hemisphere, the Donroe Doctrine, the US must prevent Chinese economic encroachment throughout it.
Trump / Bassett must find ways to prevent China gaining a foothold even in Canada.
I know it may sound “expansionistic” and “neo-con-like”, but the US must think in terms of owing this Western Hemisphere. The Americas as a subset of the USA.
This isn’t a popular opinion, but in my opinion the US must not allow to be cornered especially on its own continent.
It’s too late to prevent China from gaining a foothold in Canada especially with Carney at the helm. If the US auto industry is overwhelmed as has much of the worlds’, it’s going to be not just an economic nightmare but a national security one as well.
Throw another log of reason on the fire that the dems must not win Congress in the midterms.
They are already in Mexico. Correct?
How will the US auto industry ever grow while paying autoworkers $50 an hour for basic assembly line work and demanding $50-100K for basic automobiles? They won’t…… They’ve created a national security threat via Indebting the American people, just as the Banks ran rampant in 07-08 and prior years on mortgages. Until someone solves this debt problem across the board and puts strings on Local Govt’s taxing the piss out of everything moving and not. Our country is going to be screwed.
Given the push and movement in areas of US manufacturing, businesses and politics over the years; in the global push towards so-called Climate Health .. how feasible is it for the USA now, to bring back in time oil refineries closed across the US?
“For years, we watched the closure of refineries across the nation. In California alone, the Phillips 66 and Valero facilities shut down, slashing the state’s refining capacity by over 20 percent . These closures are removing a massive 429,000 barrels per day of production from the market at a time when we need every single drop. The system cannot sustain these losses; there are no new refineries coming online to replace them anytime soon. This domestic shortage is now being compounded by a global crisis that the political class seems utterly unable to comprehend. We have effectively lost the Persian Gulf as a production hub”
This is an article that reflects the same problem Australia and the US now faces :

Politicians – here we go .. when empathy stops being a virtue and becomes a liturgy. Toxic empathy does not ask what happened.
“Turning their deaths into a Western morality play does none of those things. It takes their tragedy and makes it aA mountain fell down in the Himalayas. Within hours, prominent voices on the left were on their knees confessing our climate sins.
It was not one voice, it was a chorus. Claudia Webbe, a British MP, posted footage of the flood tearing through a Nepali town, noted that Nepal produces a tenth of one percent of the world’s emissions, and delivered the verdict: we did this.
Yassamin Ansari, a sitting United States Congresswoman from Arizona, called it “the climate crisis” and pivoted straight into an attack on Trump and Republican tax breaks for oil companies, as if a mountain in the Himalayas had been waiting on a congressional vote in Washington.
Nazia Kazi, an academic with a large following, went further than either of them and stated outright that the collapse was caused primarily by, her words, “EuroAmerican consumption and military activity.” Her post cleared twenty thousand likes.
Human Rights Watch, an organization some Americans still imagine as sober and careful, told its followers that communities least responsible for climate change once again bear the brunt of its impacts, folding a specific mountain collapse into a general indictment of our failures to grab enough solar panels.
Four voices. A British Parliament seat. A U.S. congressional seat. A university professor. One of the world’s most prominent human rights organizations. All four reached the identical conclusion within hours, before the death toll had stabilized, before a single seismologist had finished reading the data. Not “China did this.” Not “geology did this.” They went straight for “We did this.”bout us, one more time, because that is the only story the confession booth knows how to tell.
A British MP, an American Congresswoman, an academic with a large following, and a global human rights organization had no trouble closing that question within hours, before the death toll had even stabilized.
That is the tell. When the people with the instruments and the training say we don’t know, and the people with the platforms and the guilt say we did this, you are not looking at science being communicated. You are looking at a theology being enforced. Every disaster becomes original sin, and the facts arrive too late to matter because the retweets already happened. Taking Nepal’s tragedy and making it about us, one more time – because it is the only story the confessional booth knows how to tell.

Yep. VW is in a long-term spiral of doom.
I have a 2012 VW Passat TDI (Diesel). Have 112,000 miles.
Other than regular maintenance, a water pump and timing & serpentine belts, it’s been pretty reliable. Gets over 45 mpg on the highway; about 40 local driving.
Would I buy a new VW?
I have a friend that got a 2024 Jetta, and he’s very satisfied… however, it did have an engine issue that the dealer fixed under warranty.
VW is also heavily invested in the new Scout motor plant in SC that should start building EV and hybrid SUVs by early 2027 – that plant has cost big $$$ and may be making a product that not enough people will want.
If Chy-nese evs are sold throughout Germany and the EU – CTH is right – the ‘cheap’ car 🚗 won’t stay that way.
BB, I too have a 2012 VW Jetta Sportswagon, TDI , 6-speed manual with 175,000 and no issues. Some assembly was in Mexico but sent back to Germany for the engine, etc.
It gets basically the same mpg as yours and except for the E4 sensor which is a mechanic’s nightmare I wouldn’t swap it for any other car. It has never let me down.
I bought a spare clutch/flywheel assembly 2 years ago in anticipation of the scenario now happening.
Remember the phony emission scam pulled on VW by an American college professor at the time the highest fine ever.
Diesel Gate as we called it? I made out like a bandit after VW coughed up nearly $7K total to me for “pain and suffering” since I kept my car once I found out what the “fix” was.
Yeah, I lost a few mpg’s but still far better than average vehicles plus I didn’t want to shop around for another diesel that was stick shift. No regrets.
“One of the things Europe will find out is that as soon as China has dominated their auto market, those cheap EVs will no longer be cheap”
THIS!!!
Also, the so called in Europe “Germany economic miracle” = imports of really cheap Russian fuel that many other EU members didn’t have access to.
I’m curious, if the EU and the rest of the world gets rid of these stupid climate change laws on the books that the car companies have to follow will the automakers be able to compete with BYD and Geely?
Would China be able to manufacture a car and sell it at a loss in these countries?
The carbon credit exchange and environmental rules seems to be the things that needs to be targeted?
Can anyone explain this a little bit more for those of us who have a semi grasp on this predicament.
Short answer: No. China stole their tech and can do it cheaper.
It happens because people in power can direct a cut of the business back to themselves in a endless variety of ways. They like it the way it is. Whadda ya gonna do about it?
Think of it like l
the mafia. “Nice business you have there. If you’d like to work in this neighborhood, we take a cut.
It’s just like illegal immigration where the laws are set up so that the businesses and the reelected politicians get a hefty financial cut from enabling the “cheap” labor.
The tax paying citizens? Well they get the bill to subsidize the costs of housing, medical, SNAP that makes the labor “cheap”.
In both cases, the citizens lose jobs and get told to be grateful that they can pay “less” for the goods that they pay waaay more to subsidize.
Well done, succinct and accurate, thank you Elle!
Excellent analysis.
The rest of the world does *not* want to get rid of “those stupid climate change laws.” At least not the *leaders* of the western world, in any case.
9/11 was the symbolic collapse of USA as the center of world trade to usher in globalism. The climate change model is an *intentional* demolition of all western economies. This has been a systematic capitulation (to China?) meant to turn all sovereign western nations into vassal states.
The problem can be fixed, as President Trump’s economic policies have clearly demonstrated. That is, if there is a will amongst our shadow gubmint to run with MAGAnomics. (There isn’t.)
There is only their one world reset, set to resume as planned, as soon as President Trump vacates the White House. The current behavior of Canada and the Euroweenies reflects a continued policy of “waiting out” this rather annoying anomaly or “blip” in American politics reflected by President Trump and MAGA.
The absurdity that China, arguably the biggest polluter on earth, should dole out any ‘carbon credits’ tells us everything we need to know about this planet sustainability malarkey.
Does this mean I can buy a Mercedes Benz from my local Walmart now??🤣🤣🤣
<chuckles>
Yes, A cheap Chinese knockoff seems to be coming.
Yeah, the 1:25 scale model in the toy dept!
It will take “some sort of legislative action”. We cant trust legislators for anything.
Also, I don’t know if our brainwashed kids are capable of sustaining a factory full of workers or manufacturing plant.
Name some great manufacturing plants in the U.S. that are operating today
I have this same fear Doc, I don’t feel like more legislation is the answer.
Get rid of these damn climate controls is the answer.
Stop forcing automakers these stupid rules of carbon controls.
Get rid of ethanol in our gas.
Maybe someone can give me the ins and outs in this.
I remember a few episodes of American pickers they always seemed to show some guy who built his own car back in the 30s or 40s.
–“…I don’t feel like more legislation is the answer.”–
It was Congress, the Legislation branch, that legislated/imposed all of “these damn climate controls”, forced “automakers <with> these stupid rules of carbon controls”, and using “ethanol in our gas”.
So it will take legislation from Congress to get rid of all of those regulations.
Britain sold off their family silver, their once great automotive manufacuring to foreigners…
Rover (Land Rover, Range Rover), now owned by Tata Motor Company
Jaguar, same
Rolls Royce, owned by (oddly) BMW
MG, now owned by SAIC, a Chinese state-owned motor manufacturer from Shanghai
Jobs massacred, cohesive and thriving communities decaying and ultimately destroyed.
It will be the same for the four German cities/towns mentioned above by Sundance.
No new worries, their countries are already circling the drain with the muslims they allowed in.
Circling, P??
Well and truly flushed.
P-UU-I-I-I-SH-SH-SH
Wow … 100,000 skilled jobs going, going, gone … now that’s a LOT.
The Third Reich, which the Nazis referred to as the Thousand-Year Reich, ended in May 1945 after 12 years — vice the much ballyhooed 1000 year Nazi prediction — when the Allies defeated Germany and entered the capital of Berlin, ending World War II — and the Third Reich — in Europe …
Now how did THAT work out for them … ?? I’d say the Germans are not very good at “predictions” …
And we can put the ChiComs in that same dust heap of history if we don’t buy their “cheap crap” and “just say NO” to the economic, industrial, societal, and military disaster that they could bring to the USA …
We have to go to all out economic war with the CCP, deport ALL their students, don’t allow ANY chinese visas for any reason whatsoever. Put a war surcharge on any oil heading to china that goes through the Strait we control, as well as any oil that originates in Venezuela.
Then keep adding additional tarriffs on all imports from china until American companies like Apple and Tesla can’t make a profit and move production here, even if that means 500-1000%.
And ban any company with ANY chinese ownership from ever selling here, even if its made here.
we should be careful not to wag our fingers at the EU and Canada for their self-destruction. The USA is half a stride behind those places in surrendering everything to the ChiComms and the global climate hustlers (BTW, funded by the ChiComms). Only Trump stands in the way and his own party can’t wait for him to be out of office or dead.
When Trump is gone, then what?
Perhaps that’s when the Liberty Tree should be watered.
This thought scares my husband and I too. He’s 78, I’m 73. Trump is the best thing to happen to America since winning the Revolutionary War. But would a democrat win 2028? Would JD Vance win 2028? Would Vance continue what Trump is doing? Would Rubio win in 2028? Would he continue what Trump is doing? Trump has the kind of energy and courage we have not seen in other Presidents in all our lives. We have ongoing questions about what will follow Trump’s presidency.
“But would a democrat win 2028? Would JD Vance win 2028? Would Rubio win in 2028?”
All are possible if Thune and the GOP are successful
“Would Vance continue what Trump is doing? “
Absolutely not.
You know, it’s being said that Europe can not pull out of this spiral.
I would offer that it is in fact “a feature, not a bug” as Sundance often says.
The reason being the the EU WANTS All vehicles driving in Europe to be electric because of their climate crap, and this is the fastest and easiest way to accomplish that.
Moreover, the EU not only does not care one iota about the citizens of Europe and their economic condition – impoverishing them is yet Another Feature (not a bug) of this scheme. It is a well known goal of the this anti-humanist crowd all the way back to the 1992 Rio Conference, that they want to destroy what we call middle-class affluence.
They’ve been doing it here since that time, and it’s only MAGA which is challenging our destruction.
Bu… but I thought Germany needs immigrants to do the jobs Germans won’t do.
I wonder if Volkswagen knows how to make Zambonis?
Does anybody believe the US government will protect us from this happening??
Well the only ones who buy a cheap Chinese EV would be the woke who believe in the climate change hoax and progressive Democrats! So let them buy that cheap Chinese junk and suffer the poor motor maintenance and disintegrating body consequences! JMO
My headline for this article would be “Bad German Policy facilitates Chinese Economic Hegemony.”
Goodbye to vw ,I owned old bug that I had when I was a kid. We had a lot of fun in it. I thought those Germans would be smarter, but they listen to those liberals. They will be speaking mandarin soon!!! Another one of those stupid ass that will be kissing that Chinese ass soon. The loonie Canadians and the suck ass European like that, better get read to pucker.
The Soviets had 44 years to brainwash the East Germans like Merkel and they pumped a lot of propaganda in to West Germany. Then there was reunification which included a lot of communists.
When I was in Berlin in 1969, there were free Huey Newton posters on the streetlamps. The international left gets around.
Decline is a choice.
After the announcement, I got ahold of the forward looking statement, unfortunately, I have nothing further to share as I cant read Chinese.
Next the EU will be working on personal methane reclamation devices to combat climate change.

While China and Islam fights/competes according to Alinsky #4 (“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules”) and they avoid all such rules, lie, betray and use slaves; the “field” will never be equal or level! Unless you have a death wish, you must relax your “rules” with THEM to the point of absolute RECIPROCITY, else we become the next slave! Eye for eye, Tooth for tooth! No tolerance, no if’s or but’s, no trade, no talk, no “visitors” or “students” and no regrets!
CCP EVs tend to spontaneously burst into flames.
Did not know that Mercedes was already part owned by a Chinese car company. Sad news for my wife. There will never be one in our driveway.
20% ownership is enough to begin sanctioning Mercedes sales in the US.
The U.N. and WEF and EU message to the entire nation of Germany: “Learn to code.”
Oh, it has arrived here. We just do not see it yet.
China is a means to the end of western civilization. Europe seems to have fallen easily but the German automakers plight that Sundance laid out is part of the culmination of a plan that has spanned two centuries. America was useful toward their ends in Europe, but head of the snake has already arrived here too.
EVs are the transition out of private vehicles not an alternative to them. I hold an unpopular perspective that Tesla was created to serve the same globalist agenda as the Chinese EV strategy that Sundance explains. Tesla was not a response to fill a market need. An EV market was created through a complex manipulation of capital, regulatory controls and financial coercions – much like Germany’s automakers were hit with..
Tesla mysteriously found itself with the latest in vehicle technology and manufacturing systems. They are heavily subsidized through a labrinth of tax and regulatory frameworks. The highly integrated software in Teslas makes the Chinese connected vehicle architecture look primitive.
Now take note: Musk has already given China all of the Tesla vehicle, software, manufacturing and connected vehicle systems.
The head of the snake is here – but we have leaders who have not sold out – men who intend to cut it off and bury it.
Volkswagen walks into a bar and buys China a drink to save the climate.
China studies the recipe, opens a cheaper bar next door, and hires Volkswagen’s unemployed bartender.
Makes you wonder what is going on in the backrooms for these men to keep selling out their neighbors. /weak leadership destroyed the EU, what led to that weak leadership is interesting.
Hope the GOAT keeps his horns up.
Cliffs: Chyna is full of liars and cheats. Put four of em together and they could not do one 1 American can. Canada…. lol idiots.
In the early 2000’s I was part of team building embedded software technology Our customers included auto manufacturing engineers. Over beers, after a training workshop with a German automaker (part of the VW Group actually), the lead engineer told us that his team had built a plant in China about a year before.
He told me he had just returned from China after upgrading the plant. In that year the Chinese had completely replicated the Germans’ plant, copied absolutely everything and were turning out Chinese cars. When he sounded the alarm with his management, they told him to back off. They said they had no choice – they had to let the Chinese copy it or lose capital and market access in other countries.
That was 20 yeas ago – think how long before that this plan was laid. America is next – Trump has gone on the offense.
What if the EU plan is to close down the German Auto Industry only temporarily?
Then convert all the factories from auto manufacturing to a military manufacturing industry supplying drones, tanks, utility vehicles, motorcycles and side by sides, and whatever else is necessary to fight their war with Russia?
Those products will need to be made somewhere, they don’t grow on trees.
The raw materials will be coming from Canada.
The indigenous male population will be drafted into the war.
The migrant population will work in the factories.
Has anyone else considered this?

The over arching global agenda is to destroy western Christian civilization. They do not give a damn about us.
Absolutely Right.
Geely is a poisonous vacuum cleaner sucking up the auto industry. When Ford sold off all its foreign brands it sold Volvo to Greely. That was the only company Ford should have kept. Now Volvo is a pitiful shell of EV junk.
Volkswagen cheated on emissions in the US, they totally deserve this. I hate the krauts.
The fraud was an issue, and really the only issue. If you added up all of the yearly emissions of all the non-compliant diesel engines in the TDI Jetta/Golf cars sold in the US, it would not equal the yearly emissions of a single coal fired power plant. Which China opens every two weeks, on the average.
The cars still passed Euro 3 emissions, just not Euro 5. They passed emissions when on a dyno, which they could tell when the wheels pointed straight, traction control disabled and the parking brake engaged, however the drivability was terrible with the engine in that tune. I had a TDI Jetta and I would have taken the DPF off and retuned it had I kept it. 50 mpg and 300+ ft-lbs in a 3100 lb vehicle is a good combination.
How do you get people not to be stupid?
At this point to allow one chinese citizen into your country is the biggest mistake you can make, not one of them can be trusted. And to allow any product they make into your country spells doom because everything they produce is well below subpar and is unsafe and unsecure. Why is it these ev’s catch fire and burn down people’s houses? You can be sure chinese ev’s in your garage are a ticking arson ready to ignite.
Say you live in Arizona; you have been driving your byd around all day, you get home plug in the byd, which will continue to get those batteries hotter, this is how it works folks. The batteries are hot it’s 102 outside in the garage 100 and who knows. The byd’s are weapons, china’s only purpose now is to cause world chaos. This goes for all ev’s here in the U.S. they are made better but have the same problem. Electrical generation and use creates heat just a fact. Why do you think they need to keep those data centers so cool/cold?
Ban the sale of Chinese vehicles in the US, and block them at our borders. Do not allow visiting Canadians or Mexicans to drive them within the USA.
I wonder if the formerly strong manufacturing European nations like Germany, will ever see how their zero emissions push has strangled their abilities to be self-supporting?
The Germans, English, the Irish, Europeans, Australians, and Canada have been taken over thrown from the enemy within…
The swirling system is by design invented by socialist communist… It’s called mail in ballots and voting machines…
If President Trump allows the use of mail in ballots and the voting machines we Americans will be joining that group…
As soon as the German auto industry closes down, they will no longer need to buy carbon credits. No manufacturing, no “carbon” to offset.
Once the carbon credits dry up, Chinese EV makers will no longer have that cash windfall available to subsidize sales prices of their EVs. Chinese EV prices will have to rise to cover their actual un-subsidized build-costs and profit margin.
Germany will be left with a dead auto industry and nothing but increasingly expensive Chinese EVs to buy.
