Volkswagen is a case study in self-destruction as a result of EU ‘climate’ politics and German auto company decision-making. The decision to chase climate policy created European legislation that set quotas, limits and fines on automakers who did not shift to electric vehicles. German automakers then chose to purchase carbon credits from China, who then use those sales to further discount exported EVs into the German market.
Simultaneously, Volkswagen opened up operation in China allowing their technology to be captured by Chinese auto makers who turned around and duplicated the technology at a much lower price. Once the manufacturing was at full speed, China stopped purchasing Volkswagen autos.
The partly state-owned German automaker Volkswagen announced today [SEE HERE] their survival as a company now requires the elimination of 100,000 jobs in Germany with the closure of plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and the Audi site in Neckarsulm. Volkswagen will not be the last German company to suffer this fate as Mercedes is now 20% owned by Chinese EV company Geely.
The German auto workers do not have a choice. They no longer have a solid consumer base for their vehicles, and China continues to export low price EVs into the European market. Every euro in tariffs against Beijing is offset by the euros the auto companies spend purchasing Chinese carbon credits to avoid European fines. They cannot get out of the spiral.
GERMANY – The car company Volkswagen has approved controversial plans to shed 100,000 jobs in a battle for survival as it faces fierce competition from Chinese rivals.
After the latest round of talks this week, the company announced a further 50,000 job cuts and agreed a staggered end to current production at four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and the Audi site in Neckarsulm between 2031 to 2034. There are no specific plans beyond that.
The agreement came as a surprise after a meeting of shareholders, unions, and state representatives on the supervisory board in what was seen as a considerable test for the German carmaker’s chief executive, Oliver Blume.
He had gone as far as to arrange an emergency meeting if the package was rejected in preparation for a potential showdown with unions. (more)
In a directly related report, U.S. auto manufacturers are now urging congress to outright ban Chinese cars from the American market. There are a few auto consumers who don’t like this approach, but it is entirely appropriate.
One of the things Europe will find out is that as soon as China has dominated their auto market, those cheap EVs will no longer be cheap. Once Beijing captures the market, they will slowly start to increase the price extracting the maximum profit in the long-term strategy.
China would do this in North America if we do not protect the auto sector. Ultimately, this is why Prime Minister Mark Carney is going to create a serious problem by allowing the import of Chinese EVs and letting them set up a manufacturing base in Canada.
It’s not just about cars. If you lose your auto industry you erode your manufacturing base, your steel and aluminum production, your capacity to retain industrial engineering skills and many other ancillary aspects – including military. The auto industry represents much more than just the production of consumer cars.
Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and Australian markets have already fallen victim within this geopolitical scheme. Canada is on the cusp of the problem. Readers here are well aware of the scheme {GO DEEP}, and yes, it will take some form of legislative action to protect North America from this problem.
WASHINGTON DC – DETROIT — Major automakers operating in the U.S. are increasing pressure on Congress to permanently ban the domestic sale, import and manufacturing of Chinese connected vehicles, hardware and software.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents the vast majority of companies selling vehicles in the U.S., urged congressional leaders in a Thursday letter to make a move before the end of Congress’ current session on Jan. 3.
“Right now, Chinese automakers are dumping subsidized vehicles with connected software and hardware around the world,” John Bozzella, CEO of the group, said in the letter seen by CNBC. “This hasn’t happened inside the U.S. yet, but given the scale and urgency of this threat, we urge you to enact a Chinese vehicle, software and hardware ban before adjourning this year and make this policy the law of the land.”
Midterm elections are also coming up in November, which could affect Congress’ momentum.
Bozzella’s comments come amid bipartisan efforts in the House and Senate to address Chinese vehicles, including legislation advanced by the Senate Commerce Committee that could bar Mercedes-Benz from the U.S. market because Chinese investors hold nearly 20% of the German automaker.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which includes Mercedes-Benz, said in the Thursday letter that it wants to work with lawmakers to “achieve a balanced policy so all our member companies continue to succeed and thrive inside the U.S.” (read more)

There are regulations on how much rain water can enter a slightly open side window or hit the external wing mirror during driving, so the manufacturers spend a huge amount of money and time on that. And then, the government fines them when Ursula Von Der Lyen opens her window while driving in a rainstorm and gets wet. They made the car fool proof, but then they found a bigger fool.
To force companies to subsidize their own competitors and then not expect consequences shows a profound ignorance of economics or a sociopathic intent to destroy your country. Either way, those in charge should be kicked to the curb.

Carbon credits, the brain-child of that world famous scientist Albert Gore. It was his way of saving face when it was learned that he was one of the largest consuming customers of the Tennessee Valley Authority! Carbon credits were the sleight of hand by the rich to avoid being exposed for the farcical climate crisis crackdown (crack being the main product that those who “professed” to believe in the climate crisis, global warming, global cooling creation). Global warming and global cooling are both part of a cycle that for centuries was known as CLIMATE. Those with the intent of using the “crisis” as a money making scheme cared nothing about the climate nor did they understand the cyclical nature of it. Most of them never heard of the Ice Age either or they believe global warming destroyed it!! Either way, if they TRULY believed, they would NEVER fly to climate conferences. As a matter of fact they would never fly anywhere. They wouldn’t own a vehicle (especially not an EV since the electricity requirements to operate them are much higher than anything needed to operate a gas engine), instead they would walk everywhere. They would even limit the use of bicycles because of the energy required for production of tires. The true believers would be out planting trees rather than chopping them down. The legislation we need must protect the US. We will not be able to protect Canada, so all of North America cannot be saved. So we must anticipate where on the battlefield China will attack in the US to gain market share. At least one axis of attack will be political through lobbying firms paying off legislators to either support legislation favorable to China’s ability to flood the US market with Chinese EV’s or to vote against legislation that protects the US market. That money trail will be hard to follow as China will attempt to disguise their influence by obfuscating how they are feeding money to lobbyists and further obfuscated by which legislatures are receiving the money. A second potential axis of attack will be through social media and big media influences spreading misinformation or as Sundance say Dis, Mis, and Mal-information about EV’s to create a popular groundswell for China’s EV products. Yes, the CCP must be kept out of our auto market in the USA and big tariffs on the ChiCom parts, from all pass-thru countries was a good start. China was clearly inside the wire, with regards to our USA market as a whole (electronics, pharma, etc) until President Trump came onto the scene. The changes since then, in the industries that I sell into, are drastic, mostly due to the tariffs. Moving production back to the USA or at least to some country other than China has been significant to avoid the larger tariff put onto China goods.
We also need to be careful with India. Their population is massive, like China, and growing faster.
Any Chinese produced vehicle should not be even allowed to travel US roads. Any Canadian headed south should be stopped at the border and turned around. If a BYD or Geeley is found free range on any US roads that car should be stopped, confiscated and CRUSHED.
NOTE: GM (and perhaps Ford and Chrysler) are already selling China-assembled vehicles in the USA.

With the inflationary effect of a yearly 2 trillion dollar deficit, it might be better to leave the interest rates alone and go with the embargo on countries we are running huge trade deficits. Start with the countries that we could easily ramp up their products domestically. Inflation once it starts is hard to stop. I lived through Volcker running interest rates to 20% to wring inflation out of the system.

Volcker had to deal with stagflation which is even worse. High inflation plus high unemployment plus no economic growth.

VW will end up like Austrian motorcycle maker KTM. KTM moved a lot of their production to China, and the Chinese predictably stole all their IP and started selling bikes under the brand CF Moto. Meanwhile, the Chinese-made KTMs were of such poor quality that their camshafts eroded and came apart under normal use, so people stopped buying them. KTM went bankrupt, and was then bought by Indian motorcycle company Bajaj Auto.
So the Austrians engineered everything, then lost it all to China and India. What a disgusting embarrassment! And it looks like most of the socialist halfwits in Europe are right in line behind the Austrians, like little idiot lemmings. They just can’t wait to give up everything to foreign powers. And Deutz did not agree to emissions control on these engines so no piece of non-stationary equipment can be sold into the US. I worked for VW for years……as a Service Manager in a VW dealership. I left when they started to move into electric vehicles. I hated them. I hated the Jetta hybrid……..all kinds of issues. But….they were determined to build it and shove it down the throats of Americans. I could see from where I was….that there was no demand for this, but we needed to move in this direction anyways.
That meant for me in my 60’s to go back to school and relearn the technology. At my age…..and my absolute distrust and hate for electric vehicles……I decided to retire early which I am really glad I did!
I’m old school…..love muscle cars…..Im and old Chrylser guy so the Chargers and the Challengers are big for me. The dealer I worked for had multiple franchises which is how I eneded up in his VW franchise. It was failing, and I had made the Chrysler dealership a 5 STAR Facility…..and he wanted me to turn around his VW franchise. I did. It took me 3 years to turn it around and I stayed for an additional 15 years running that shop.
But when they made a decision to go electic…….I made my decision!

Auto Makers were forced by government to get into the EV insanity. Just like banks were forced to make SubPrime Loans with no money down. Most of the problems come from government. They make a policy and it hurts the common man and then they make another policy that is supposed to help. Corporations have to make money. Do you really think Bud Light would have hired a DEI person to get rid of their existing customers to get new customers? Anyone with half a brain knows retaining a customer is important. You learned it in the old days as a kid from Poor Richard: A Bird in the Hand is Worth Two in the Bush. Refer back to “Safe and Effective” as often as necessary.

Even with the false data being thrown when it was hooked up to the computer, it still burned clean, efficient and had low maintenance. Obama and congress auto regulation, holding hands with the cabal, killed it. Helped start the demise of German auto engineering. I was on the verge if buying the buick version because gm had optioned it for select cars. Pissed me off. We didn’t want an suv or crossover. Wanted a sports wagon for one of our vehicles.
I know a couple of guys who pooled together and just ignored the buy back. Bought a couple of parts cars and the tools necessary for maintenance. Said they have had no issues. F regulation bs.

Another part of the problem is getting – especially GM & Ford – to stop building junk. I want to buy American made but I’m tired of subsidizing junk. A good place to start is getting rid of the stupid CAFE standards.
