Last night our cat Rado (pronounce as in Silverado) died. We think he suffered a massive sudden stroke.
All animals are unique, God’s creations, and Rado was a very special gift for 6 years. A former stray, he came into our lives unexpectedly as a battle-scarred scruffy guy who had enough of the rough life. So, six years ago he took a chance on us, and from that moment to this we were forever grateful for his presence.
After the initial vet check and neutering, Rado immediately sought to find his place in our family and was uniquely gifted at expressing thankfulness. He lived his absolute best life for the past six years and was reciprocally cherished beyond all imaginings.
As his battle scars healed, Rado blossomed into his beautiful Russian Blue best. A truly handsome fellow, and incredibly unique in cat disposition. His heart was a feature of his personality that exceeded his good looks.
Each day Rado would check on his peeps, making his forever faithful patrol rounds to see what everyone was doing, a trait later called his ‘security checks.’
Once he knew his humans were in their appropriate and familiar places, he would go about doing cat things – napping and enjoying his best life, while remaining watchful and forever thankful.
It is said that pets generally will attach to one member of the household, and I have found that to be true in all cases until Rado. He received a middle name because he just seemed to need one. Thus, in his second year, Rado became Rado-Thomas.
As if he were forever as concerned about equitable devotion as he was for showing appreciation, Rado Thomas loved everyone equally with his full appreciation.
His intentional efforts were uniquely noticeable. Through each and every day of the six years he put time, effort and energy into making sure his adopted humans knew he was thankful.
In the life of Rado Thomas, perhaps an outcome of his origin, he never once took anything for granted. He loved very well. “Those outside days are over,” he would seem to convey, “this inside stuff is just way better.” With that expressed opinion solidly as his foundation he never once again looked wistfully toward the outside; nope, not even a twitch or a flinch. “Right here” was his place, right here.
Rado was an unexpected gift upon arrival and became a visible reminder of how to define ‘steadfast’. “You move, I move, that’s just the way it is human,” and with his companionship, even when it was totally undeserved, that’s just the way he was.
I am sure many readers will understand when I say he was more than ‘just a cat‘.
Rado Thomas will live forever, deeply in my heart.
Farewell my boy, I love you.

“HOME” — EDITH WHISKERS
Sorry for your loss. We lost Ms. Mister back in April–fifteen years after she chose us. We still expect to see her on our pillows or anywhere a blanket has been left accessible. She loved my wife better than me, but for years I got some pretty decent helpings of feline love as I worked from home with her in my lap while my wife still had to do the daily commute.
God took Rado too early, but he was well loved. As were you.
I am sorry.
Yes. God gave us pets to learn about life. Rest well, Rado Thomas. Say Hey to Buddy, Chance, Dr Strange, Bartski, Nancy, Baby Girl, and SuEllen..a lifetime of loving animal pals
A beautiful feline, Sundance … and heartwarming message. We just obtained a Maine Coon kitten … and Billie … is simply the sweetest, smartest, most playful and loving little kitty we’ve ever had as a family member. Billie is a total love. She’s named after my father in law as she was born on his birthday.
this is a very close pic to what Billie looks like …
She loves playing kitten games with us all day long … and follows us under feet wherever we go.
Beautiful Billie. Lucky you.
I forgot to say she was replacing a very cuddly male cat that we adopted from my Niece’s family who moved from the SF Bay Area to Montana … and didn’t want him to get eaten by Grizzlies, Cougars, or vicious raccoons. Sadly, he passed about a year ago … and it’s taken us this long to find a new feline. But I’m glad we did. And no … I don’t believe I surrender my man card for liking cats … but I like dogs too.
Animals know …he knew..a lucky boy found his family. Well done, well said, and may you and yours find peace in knowing he sought to be his best in appreciation of your kindness. 🙏
As we say about all our animals, he fell into a good place. People who take in strays are good people
You have my condolences!
Sundance just remember, we’re always here for you!
Thank you, Sundance.. Brings tears. This year we lost our 15 year old Tuxedo tommy and our 19 year old miniature Poodle. It does hurt, but they will be with us as your Silverado will be with you.
I have a blue cane corso named Zeus. He is on my avatar.
I try to imagine his life ending and I cannot prepare myself.
I have taken for granted moments with him I wish I could get back. I try to appreciate him as much as he is loyal, I cannot.
I never have allowed a dog this spot in my life and at times I wish I hadn’t. Not for the responsibility but the fact I will be without him some day.
I have had no problem ending a Dog’s life for different reasons, Zeus is part of our family and is not considered a dog anymore.
I pray he lives as long as me.
I wish Rado wasn’t more than “just a cat” for that reason. I feel sympathy for you, I feel your pain.
I cannot imagine such a life just ending, I hope they are beside us in the next life.
So many go unnoticed and have so much to give.
Awwww, I’m so sorry SD. A truly beautiful tribute.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Beautiful !
Rado was gorgeous!
Bless you, Sundance.
We have an old cat. Her kidney problems started early 2020, which we’ll always remember because the vets were in full COVID madness. We had to leave her outside the door of the 24-hour emergency vet’s office, not knowing if we were ever going to see her again.
At this point, her kidney function is minimal. She was fat and muscular before, but she lost a ton of weight. She’s still thin, but she put some weight back on when we figured out how to rotate different cat foods to keep her interested in eating.
She lived in London for the first half of her life, moving around from tower block apartments and slums with neighborhood foxes to semi-posh houses and back. The second half has been in Minnesota, first in a small cold house with kids and dogs (and a semi-finished basement where she could get into the ceiling), then in a teeny-tiny apartment redeemed only by a closet that shared a wall with the boiler room, so she had her own personal sauna. She finally landed in a house with lots of hiding spaces and a yard with plenty to sniff (she has no interest in the yard per se, but she loves to sniff the foundation of the house).
She could go any day, but for now she is still doing the things she loves. We aren’t ready. Probably never will be. I’d love one more sunny warm spring day outside with her. Don’t know if we’ll get it.
Sorry for your loss. It’s always tough to lose a pet and part of the family. You undoubtedly gave him a good life for the six years he was with you.
That’s beautiful. Pets are so amazing.
So sorry for your loss and congratulations on your six years of cohabitation with a special kitty!
Some angels have whiskers. RIP, Rado.
What a Beautiful Kitty , Sundance .
My heart breaks for You and Your Family .
Fair Winds ,
Rado Thomas ,
and May You All be Consoled Knowing You Will Meet Again 💘
Sincere condolences.
Losing an animal you love and have taken care of is always tragic and unbearable 🙁
Thank You
What a beautiful bunny, SD!!!
Just saw this.
I am in tears.
After losing my father this summer, passings like your ‘guy’ are just even worse.
I just told my mother tonight, that no matter what, I will be happy to adopt her beloved Ben (born in a concrete factory and still has a natural dislike of men’s loud voices, inside cat) and would be happy to inherit the sixth grade drawing of the cockatoo I gave her.
She laughed and said two things. She wanted to write that down because Ben would definitely go to me, and she has many paintings that I could have that would suffice over the drawing, yet that was a very dear Christmas present.
Eternal love for God’s precious ones! This is Ben, and he lives on in Rado Thomas’ spirit. Happy Caturday. God bless.
Very sorry to hear about your heartbreak. What a wonderful tribute to a great cat! RIP Rado – You were so well loved.
What a truly beautiful soul! Rest in peace, sweetie!
Prayers. Saying good bye to a cherished animal is tough.
I was never a cat guy, until I got 2 Russian Blue kittens to keep my wife company. The male bonded with me and was the most loving cat I’ve known. He had a full life of 18 years. I rejoice with you for Rado’s gift of life and gratitude.
This has touched me most deeply, and I grieve with you. I have 5 rescue cats, 1 still mostly wild but always here for his meals. I love them all very much, and know the loss you are feeling.
Rado Thomas no doubt is waiting patiently for you, to once again do his security checks, for eternity.
Understand, and my sincere condolences on your loss. What a great blessing he was to you and your family.
So sorry for your loss.
So sorry for the loss of your Rado. He looks exactly like our female stray that decided to live the indoor safe life with us several years ago. She definitely has attached herself to my husband and can dispatch a mouse like no other. Watching her look at every picture on the wall and discover cold air falling out of the fridge door has been an experience.
our fur babies are treasures and their memories warm our souls so very sorry
I’m so sorry for you and your family’s loss, Sundance. It is wonderful to love and be loved by our animal companions, and we are better people for the experience. Rado Thomas WILL live in your heart forever, and the sadness that you feel today will turn to smiles as you recall how he enriched your life. God bless you and your family.
Having just lost my cat, Pippin, and last year, losing my dog of 15 years, Tucker, I understand why, emotionally, Sundance had to make this post, in honor an memory of a unique love relationship. When my dog Tucker died, I posted my feelings on a forum, and went back to that forum occasionally, to read what I had written, and feel the grief, attachment, love and loss once again. I did the same with my cat, Pippin.
I am sure that, in days, weeks, or even years ahead, Sundance will come back to this post, and re-read this outpouring of emotion.
My deepest sympathies are with you, Sundance.
If you have never read the ‘poem’ for the Rainbow Bridge’. https://therainbowbridgepoem.org/
My deep sympathies. Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories of a beautiful family member.
He was a big boy. I’m sorry for your loss. I love pets so much. I’m a mess when they pass on.
My guy passed in April 2020 right before lockdowns. He was twenty years old. I miss him still.
My daughter found our”new” kitten in the dumpster at her job. She was probably 5-6 weeks old and tiny. She would’ve never made it out of that huge dumpster alive. She’s a beautiful grayish Tiger calico. Sweet yet feisty. I love her.
So sorry Sundance. I have 2 cats and 1 is 16 years old with medical problems. I know it is just a matter of time. All we can do is have some great memories of them.
Beautiful eulogy………..indeed all who have loved our 4 or 2 legged family members feel your grief because it is ours. I can still feel the texture of the fur of each of my long gone pets.
Our prayers to all and Jesus is pleased by your unconditional love for innocent Rado.
So sorry. Cats are family.
I Am so sorry for your loss and God knows that I understand as I write these words to you with eyes full of tears. I Am on your site every single day taking in the insightful and truly informative information. And I know that this information is true and never question it or your honesty and integrity. But it’s when you share your heart felt inner qualities such as this that reveals who you really are. In touch with God and His loving creation through all that is. Like these little family members that shown us what unconditional love really is. May your heart heal with each passing moment, and may the little guy rest in peace!
My handle shows I’m into cats BIGLY, along with my husband. Over the decades we’ve sadly had to let six kitties return to their Creator… The last one, Grayby Junior, was a more-slightly-built Rado ringer. He fought and won so many medical crises/issues SO well! Just before Christmas 2015 we brought dark-gray-and-white tux Max into our hearts and home; yet another furry blessing!
Don’t let anyone say we won’t see our fur babies again! The word “animal” is derived from the Latin root anima/animus, which means “soul”. Thus each of us will experience a “spiritual stampede” when we’re reunited with our beloved animules (my late mother’s favorite pronunciation). P.S. I wrote this years ago about my first “soul cat”: https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-xpm-1989-10-28-8910253303-story.html
We had a feral Russian Blue. She was so sweet. Sorry for your loss.
She was lucky that she wasn’t born a Barn Cat or you may not have even had the opportunity to enjoy her company.
I’m so sorry. Sounds like you were blessed to have him in your life but he also was blessed to have you in his.
