Last night our cat Rado (pronounce as in Silverado) died. We think he suffered a massive sudden stroke.
All animals are unique, God’s creations, and Rado was a very special gift for 6 years. A former stray, he came into our lives unexpectedly as a battle-scarred scruffy guy who had enough of the rough life. So, six years ago he took a chance on us, and from that moment to this we were forever grateful for his presence.
After the initial vet check and neutering, Rado immediately sought to find his place in our family and was uniquely gifted at expressing thankfulness. He lived his absolute best life for the past six years and was reciprocally cherished beyond all imaginings.
As his battle scars healed, Rado blossomed into his beautiful Russian Blue best. A truly handsome fellow, and incredibly unique in cat disposition. His heart was a feature of his personality that exceeded his good looks.
Each day Rado would check on his peeps, making his forever faithful patrol rounds to see what everyone was doing, a trait later called his ‘security checks.’
Once he knew his humans were in their appropriate and familiar places, he would go about doing cat things – napping and enjoying his best life, while remaining watchful and forever thankful.
It is said that pets generally will attach to one member of the household, and I have found that to be true in all cases until Rado. He received a middle name because he just seemed to need one. Thus, in his second year, Rado became Rado-Thomas.
As if he were forever as concerned about equitable devotion as he was for showing appreciation, Rado Thomas loved everyone equally with his full appreciation.
His intentional efforts were uniquely noticeable. Through each and every day of the six years he put time, effort and energy into making sure his adopted humans knew he was thankful.
In the life of Rado Thomas, perhaps an outcome of his origin, he never once took anything for granted. He loved very well. “Those outside days are over,” he would seem to convey, “this inside stuff is just way better.” With that expressed opinion solidly as his foundation he never once again looked wistfully toward the outside; nope, not even a twitch or a flinch. “Right here” was his place, right here.
Rado was an unexpected gift upon arrival and became a visible reminder of how to define ‘steadfast’. “You move, I move, that’s just the way it is human,” and with his companionship, even when it was totally undeserved, that’s just the way he was.
I am sure many readers will understand when I say he was more than ‘just a cat‘.
Rado Thomas will live forever, deeply in my heart.
Farewell my boy, I love you.

.

May this messages of shared sorrow for Rado mitigate somehow the pain of losing him. He found a loving family at last and 6 years of a great life.
What a beautiful cat, I’m sure he will be missed, but always remembered. We kept a pregnant stray when I was a kid. We found good homes for all but kept the runt of the liter with mitten paws. He was the best companion, always playful. He was an inside outside cat as we lived next to a farm. One day he just didn’t come home. It was heartbreaking and I could never replace him, but always remember.
There are two rules in our home when it comes to the two resident felines
Rule number one is I do not like cats.
Rule number two is the cats couldn’t care less about rule number one.
They have a knack of finding that back door to your heart and they live there forever.
Sorry for your loss.
Yes indeed. I’m not really a cat person but a stray left her kitten here (I had been feeding the neighbors cat on my front porch while they were out of the country) and since it had started eating here I didn’t have the heart to stop.
It was a she; a very very smart she. It took me a bit over 5 years to get her to enter the trap for spaying – lots of litters too! My colony was up to 24 one time before I was able to find homes for the kittens while continuing to trap and “fix” the cats that would not be handled so no new homes. Now, I’m down to only 4 that were born here. The original kitten that started it all one day also just disappeared but I think she had gotten sick and went off to die in my totally overgrown and neglected neighbors yard. She used to like to hang out there as there was more spots to sun herself.
I think the cats send out brain waves to other cats because I now have 9 permanent residents and several that come to eat morning and night.
Could it be the heating pad beds and insulated cat house I provide that draws them?
I do not cry very easily but reading about Rado Thomas brought tears to my eyes. I love cats in such a very different way than I love dogs. I am so very sorry of the loss of your beautiful friend. Once you have the chance to know A Very Special Cat, your heart is never the same. BTW, Dantes, my white cat, is still around but sleeps a lot. He is a stray that just moved in.
Four years ago I stopped at this Mexican restaurant for lunch. Close by this quaint shop with many antiques and of all things, a cat rescue too.
Well, the margarita at lunch was strong, very strong. Walking out after lunch I knew I had no business jumping right in the car so into that little shop I went. Yep, that’s right. I walked out of that shop about an hour later with not one but two rescues.
The wife to this day will not allow me a margarita. 🙂

Cats are such amazing critters.
My heart aches for your loss, Sundance.
Most of my life cats were viewed as a nuisance. Aloof, independent. But they had a unique way of attaching to humans. We had several that were very close to us. Had a great love of their “independence” and curiosity.
You WILL see him on the other side someday .
‘Parting is all we know of heaven, and all we need of hell.’
Our condolences, Sundance.
RIP Rado 😢🌺
Peace be to you Rado Thomas,,,rest easy
😢💔🙏
I’m so sorry Rado passed away last night. He sounds like one very unique, special boy.
May Rado Thomas rest in peace.
Thank you for saving and loving him. Many blessings to you, sweet Rado and your family.
I’m terribly sad right now. I had a Blue for sixteen years. He was the most gentle and loving kitty ever. I was devastated when he passed. So, I have asked Gandalf the Grey aka G-man to keep a look out for Rado.
RIP Rado.
Run free Rado
May my soul meet yours in heaven one day Rado. Please say hello to Tina, an beautiful white marmalade cat I loved that I am sure you will notice when you see her. She was a loved like you.
Sundance, God bless you and yours! I always say the strongest personalities/characters leave us during the Holiday season because they want to imprint themselves forever in our minds. Celebrate Rads life every Christmas!
I’m so sorry for your loss! He looks like such an amazing boy. I was immediately struck by your post and the similarities to my Gandalf. He was a stray as well, and a Russian Blue with a thick double coat. I rescued him when he was about 6 years old (according to the vet). He was skin and bones, drinking from the gutter and being hunted by coyotes who were just a block away. He lept into my arms while being chased one evening.
He was a beloved family member in the years following, wanted to cuddle with me every night and waited at the top of the stairs for me to get home from work every day. He was the best family cat, and when my daughter was born years later, he was so patient with her as a baby. Even when she pulled him across the table top by his tail, he didn’t react at all and just let her. He loved belly rubs, giving hugs like a human, and loved being held like you would a newborn baby on his back.
We lost him to cancer when he was 11 and I was heartbroken. Our pets are more than just pets, or just a cat…. they are family. I pray for the peace of Christ, which transcends all understanding over you and your family in this season of loss.
I can barely imagine how hard it’ll be when Mickey and Meowry go to their great rewards. They do that security patrol thing too, and adopted us like Rado did you. My deepest condolences on the loss of your little buddy.
What great photos of your wonderful boy. So very sorry.
My deepest condolences for your loss. He’s such a beautiful, beautiful cat.
Sorry man, they do become our family.
Every day shared with a pet is a good day.
Cats are special, as they eventually learn to love anything they reckon they can’t murder.
Magnificent cat! RIP.
RIP Rado.
Bless you for giving Rado a home. He did not die a stray. He passed knowing Love. Animals reincarnate as well as do humans. Rado will be born again, a kitten in a loving home because of your gift of Love. You changed Rado’s Future to be more wonderful! Your Love will always be a part of him. ❤
OMG. I’ve never had a Russian Blue and we’ve had lots of cats. He is magnificent! God love him:-) My cats, Carl (15+) and Pumpkin (9+) send their condolences.
Handsome cat. Sorry to hear of your loss. But at the same time glad to hear you had the opportunity to experience the unique joy that he alone could bring to your family. Meow.
Sundance and family,, I’m saddened to hear about the loss of your beloved Rado Thomas.
I’m happy he found his forever home in your kind and loving heart, and home. Rado surely was a beauty! RIP sweet Rado ❤️
Dude, I feel bad for you.
I live alone. Moved to N Fl almost 6 years ago.
I have a cat that ‘adopted’ me almost 3 years ago. Belonged to a young, female doctor 1 street over (parallel) from me.
According the to the doc, she adopted her in 2106 and she was fully mature (breeding age) but no one knows how mature (total age), including the vets. She is at least 8 years old. I think she’s closer to 10-11, minimum.
She is right beside me at this very moment.
She is a small, fluffy black cat with white markings (tuxedo), has an auto immune disease that I have to get treated regularly , and is a drama queen and the talk of my street.
When I was gravely ill with Covid 2 summers ago, she literally came in and laid on her head on my right foot, wrapped both of her paws around my right ankle and hung on for life, as I was also for DAYS!!
She literally follows me around like a dog. Tries to follow me on walks to my town center 3 blocks away sometimes and I have to chase or walk her back home to keep her from getting hit by a car.
Is jealous of everyone and anything that takes my attention ( ie cell phone)
I wasn’t looking for a pet but she literally walked up to me on day one, propped on my leg like a dog and would not and has never left me. Not once!!!
Her former owner is ok with it. Says she never seen her act towards anyone like she does me. Comes to visit her every 1-2 months.
I can’t explain the bond.
I will never deny her or not do whatever it takes to keep her healthy and happy.
She is my best friend!
I grieve for you, my friend!
I also had a Russian blue, I lost her in May 2014 and consider her my 4-legged soulmate. Annie was a dog in a cats body, she LOVED water. She would get in the toilet, the bathtub with me & get out drenched from head to toe purring away. She also loved car rides, short or long it didn’t matter (one trip was 8 hrs one way & not a peep out of her). Since she loved being with me as much as possible she also liked going out for walks, & I quickly got her a collar & a leash because loud cars would spook her sometimes. People walking by us would drop their jaw…
I still miss her terribly & haven’t had a pet since then.
Sundance, I’m so sorry, I got thinking about my Annie, another Russian Blue, & forgot to say my condolences… What a blessing to have had that kind of connection with an awesome sounding cat!
What is is about these beautiful Blue Russian cats that come to us as strays. My mom had one who adopted her as a kitten. The little guy suffer a injury where he lost part of a upper pallet. She and my dad came to name him Smokey. By the time Smokey came around all the kids had flown the coop and Smokey ruled the roost. So sorry for your loss, but you brought back a nice memory of my family. My you find peace and comfort and have a Merry Christmas . You’ve had quite a year, so I wish you many blessings for the New Year.
They too gave Smokey a second name. Joe
Only Sundance can write an article about a CAT and have tears come to your eyes.
My condolences, Sundance. Hoping Rado just went to sleep, had a beautiful dream about his happy life and woke up in kitty heaven.
Awwwwe! What a pretty Boy! I am so sorry for your loss Sundance but know you would never trade it for the 6 precious years you got to be with Rado.
Awe…😟 what a shame…beautiful cat. I too know the sorrow of a passing beloved pet, twice. I lost my very loyal border collie, Jack, many years ago, and still can feel the pain of missing him. Then after him I lost a pretty cat, Misty, that hit me hard. Haven’t felt like replacing them since. They were my family. 💔
I know the pain all too well. I have known 3 male kitties pass from a blood clot. Fairly young as well. It can be very painful for them and they lose ability to walk. I hope your handsome boy had it easier. 😿🙏
Sorry for your loss, Sundance. It is amazing how a pet can wrap itself around your heart.
Our sympathies to you in your loss. Pets are beloved family members. ‘Rado was a great one.
So sorry. We hope all these condolences help take the edge off. We’ve been there. Mr. & Mrs. Boss
I’ve had about a dozen cats and my current dog is my 17th. I miss everyone of them. They are all waiting on the Rainbow Bridge for me and each other.
I’m so sorry, Sundance. I understand what you are going through because on Wednesday evening, we had to have our cat Max put down. We were blessed to see our cat Tiffany give birth to him and three other kittens over 13 1/2 years ago and Max was the one I wouldn’t let anyone take. My husband, daughters and I have shed quite a few tears the last few days, to say the least. Love and hugs to you and your family for your loss.
My condolences Sundance. He is was one stunning cat!
While St Thomas Aquinas- I’m sure Rado Thomas’s patron saint- did not think animals go to heaven, I remain steadfast that those animals who have been placed here for our protection and companionship will precede us or follow us to our eternal home.
Rado will be part of your welcoming party as you provided him with such a good life.
I only wish some people were more like some of our pet animals rather than the demons they emulate.
Rest In Peace sweet Rado Thomas..
Condolences. No use elaborating at this point.
God bless all of you, and care for Rado eternally.
RIP Rado. I’m so sorry for you and your family Sundance. They aren’t pets, they are family members, they are also our kid, fur babies.
Oh, how my heart aches for you, Sundance. As an animal lover and owner of two English labs, I always remind myself not to take them for granted. Not long ago and before the two labs I have now I had three labs who all passed within one year. The hole in my heart is still not healed.
May the blessings from our precious pets always keep us grounded and always remind us to open our hearts to all in need, the Rado Thomas’s of our world.
Such a lovely tribute to your beautiful buddy Rado Thomas. Prayers for your family, I know how hard it is to lose a beloved cat. God Bless. 🙏❤
Best of vibes for a unique character!
Oh Sundance!!!
My 12 yo Russian Blue, Danny, is in palliative care for ulcerative cancer. We have his twin brother, Tim, and Danny has to pass at home.. else Tim will never understand.
It’s been hell.
I am so very sorry for your loss. I have prayed to God that Dan will meet me at the pearly gates once my race is won, too.
I’m so sorry. Sending hugs to you from Central Indiana.
Russian Blues rule.
So very, very sorry for your loss, Sundance. You will get extra blessings from heaven for having rescued the little guy, and he is getting extra cat treats and chin scratches for having enriched your life. He will always bea part of you. RiP Rado Thomas.
Saying a prayer for you and your family. May the Lord comfort y’all and give youHis peace.
RIP Rado. I am so sorry for the loss you and your family are going through. They aren’t pets, they are family, our fur babies.
Cats are cool
Condolences
As someone else said: “pets are a gift from God”; they are special in that they love us unconditionally, just as our Heavenly Father does.
It’s hard to lose a cherished pet, my condolences for your loss Sundance.
