Last night our cat Rado (pronounce as in Silverado) died. We think he suffered a massive sudden stroke.
All animals are unique, God’s creations, and Rado was a very special gift for 6 years. A former stray, he came into our lives unexpectedly as a battle-scarred scruffy guy who had enough of the rough life. So, six years ago he took a chance on us, and from that moment to this we were forever grateful for his presence.
After the initial vet check and neutering, Rado immediately sought to find his place in our family and was uniquely gifted at expressing thankfulness. He lived his absolute best life for the past six years and was reciprocally cherished beyond all imaginings.
As his battle scars healed, Rado blossomed into his beautiful Russian Blue best. A truly handsome fellow, and incredibly unique in cat disposition. His heart was a feature of his personality that exceeded his good looks.
Each day Rado would check on his peeps, making his forever faithful patrol rounds to see what everyone was doing, a trait later called his ‘security checks.’
Once he knew his humans were in their appropriate and familiar places, he would go about doing cat things – napping and enjoying his best life, while remaining watchful and forever thankful.
It is said that pets generally will attach to one member of the household, and I have found that to be true in all cases until Rado. He received a middle name because he just seemed to need one. Thus, in his second year, Rado became Rado-Thomas.
As if he were forever as concerned about equitable devotion as he was for showing appreciation, Rado Thomas loved everyone equally with his full appreciation.
His intentional efforts were uniquely noticeable. Through each and every day of the six years he put time, effort and energy into making sure his adopted humans knew he was thankful.
In the life of Rado Thomas, perhaps an outcome of his origin, he never once took anything for granted. He loved very well. “Those outside days are over,” he would seem to convey, “this inside stuff is just way better.” With that expressed opinion solidly as his foundation he never once again looked wistfully toward the outside; nope, not even a twitch or a flinch. “Right here” was his place, right here.
Rado was an unexpected gift upon arrival and became a visible reminder of how to define ‘steadfast’. “You move, I move, that’s just the way it is human,” and with his companionship, even when it was totally undeserved, that’s just the way he was.
I am sure many readers will understand when I say he was more than ‘just a cat‘.
Rado Thomas will live forever, deeply in my heart.
Farewell my boy, I love you.

Obviously, he picked home. Good job Sundance.
Tears…
George Carlin once said every pet is a future heartbreak. He was right. I listened to that for years but it was the wrong thing to do. Jumping in is the right thing to do.
You give them your best and they will give you their best. No other life experience, other than family obviously, even comes close.
There’s no other word for it than it sucks. But it’s life. Look at what you, your family and Rado have been blessed with over six years. It’s not the quantity it’s the quality. But you know that and tell us with your beautiful post.
Give it some time and don’t listen to George Carlin.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Losing a member of your family is always tough.
Hugs to you and family.
I have cats, I have dogs, I have horses……I am 70 years old and have had critters all my life. I can tell you about each and every one and how deeply they were/are loved. I am so very sorry for the loss of your handsome Rado…..there just is no life worth living without the love of a treasured pet, no matter how big or how small. In time, I hope you will be able to open your heart and bring another Rado into your home……there are so many that need us………
Very sorry for your loss.Prayers for you and your family. You will be reunited with your handsome boy one day…
As I type this my 7 or 8 pound sweetheart Tuxedo Cat sits on my clipboard which is on my lap. I am so very sorry to hear this news and wish to covey my deepest sympathies for the loss of Rado. I agree with other posters that these guys are “gifts from God” a fact I know to be very true. We were lifelong dog folks and still love them but have now joined the cat team as full fledged members. We had a feral guy in our yard for close to ten years and after he had to be put down we were very much bereaved. Not 2 weeks go by and this unusual looking black and white cat (with a batman cowl/mask) showed up in the neighborhood. Less than a week later she was asleep on my lap with her head in my hand. Gift from God? Absolutely. I highly recommend giving one of these wonderful creatures a shot-you will be repaid a hundredfold. Merry Christmas to all!
We are animal rescue people. We have 4 totally useless dogs, who we love completely, here at my feet. We lost Mr. Magoo, a blind cocker 5 months ago. We mourn him every day. We completely understand your loss and feel it with you. Our feeling about Magoo, who had been horribly abused – is that he spent the last 6 years of his terrible life with people who loved him enough to make up for what came before. Thanks for this great post!
This is from Who’s Killing All My Old Girlfriends by Jon Spolestra, and applies to cats as well as dogs (and birds, turtles, all God’s crewtures):
An old man and his dog were walking along a road. The old man was enjoying the scenery when it suddenly occurred to him he was dead. He remembered dying and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble that glowed in the sunlight.
There was a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the entrance, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, “Excuse me, where are we?” “This is Heaven, sir,” the man answered. “Wow! Would you happen to have some water?” the old man asked. “Of course, sir. Come right in, and I’ll have some ice water brought right up.” The man gestured, and the gate opened. “Can my friend come in, too?” the traveler asked, gesturing toward his dog. “I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.”
The old man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. He saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book as he approached the gate. “Excuse me!” he called to the man. “Do you have any water?” “Yeah, sure, there’s a pump over there. Come on in.” “How about my friend here?” the traveler asked, gesturing to his dog. “There should be a bowl by the pump,” said the man.
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The old man filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself; then, he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man standing by the tree. “What do you call this place?” the old man asked. “This is Heaven,” he answered. “Well, that’s confusing,” the traveler said. “The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.” “Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That’s Hell.” “Doesn’t it make you mad for them to use your name like that?”
“No, we’re just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.”
RIP, Rado Thomas.

SUNDANCE and FAMILY – PLEASANT MEMORIES
and MAY GOD PROVIDE You With ANOTHER LOVE to Dote On !
May God bless and keep you, Rado. Some of these kitties are old souls. It’s hard to explain to those who aren’t experienced.
Lately, I’ve been trapping ferals in my new area – going through the TNR program. My first was what looked to be a Russian Blue. As yet I still have a gorgeous small kitten who appears to be a Russian Blue that I hope I can catch while still small enough to be adopted out.
I had no idea how extensive the feral problem was until I started working on gathering these little kittens. It’s a full-time overnight job, and very depressing.
The loss of my beloved Maine Coone Trump Cat earlier this year is still weighing heavily upon me, so I do what I can. Sundance, many of us know how much it hurts, and how incredible some of these fur souls are. Just keep on being a kind soul. God takes all this into consideration in the End.
we are currently feeding a very thin feral cat in our back yard as our dog spastically barks and we hope that we can eventually add her to our home
Sundance and family,
I offer my sincerest cons on your loss of Rado Thomas.
When some have told me,” Pets are like family.” I correct them and say, “No, they ARE family.”
I have had several pets over the years, dogs and cats, and have mourned the loss of each one.
Sometimes you know the time is near, or when it comes suddenly it still hurts.
I lost my last cat a little over a year ago after 17 loyal, faithful years. He snuck out to never return.
Not knowing where he is was the worst part. There are too many foxes and coyotes where I live.
An indoor cat who couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag, yet would never back down, would not be a match for a hungry fox. I learned that the first weekend I had him when my sister came to visit with her dog.
Thankfully for the cat, the dog was only playfully curious.
His lack of fighting prowess was the reason I kept him inside. He did manage to catch the mice that got into my house.
Rado will be waiting for you when you get to Heaven.
Regards,
John C.
A very good cat (I’ve had a couple) is a blessing. RIP Rado, condolences to Rado’s human family.
I’m sorry for your loss Sundance and family…Rado Thomas was a beautiful cat.
Rest in peace Rado.
My sincerely condolences SD. We lost both of our sister cats, Clara and Wazzu this year after 13 years. It was tough. The home felt empty without them. Still does. The new puppy went into depression. The only consolation is that I am certain both cats and dogs have souls and they are rewarded for their service to us complicated humans.
I too had a Russian Blue stray adopt me. Strays seem to let you know every single day that they love and appreciate those who take them in as family. Tears for you Sundance as I know how much it hurts to lose these precious little souls
Awww what a handsome regal boý♡♡♡♡ I am sure he is still checking on you from heaven too.
Bow, my wife picked up one day – along with three others, became a certified rascal of a cat. Timing his movements to mine, he’d dart into the closet the moment it opened or jump on my back in the bathroom as I started to —. But his favorite spot was my hip as I relaxed and then he as my guardian. He too lasted 6 years.
So hard. Been there. Hugs and love!
I am sorry for your loss… what helps me is to remember “do not cry because it is over. Smile because it occurred.”
reminds me of our Tiny cat… our big russian blue. thankfully still with us after 3 years and going strong. hard to lose a member of the family. peace.
My Sympathy in the loss of your fur baby, last year I had to put Stella my cat down..It was the hardest thing I ever went thru, because I loved her dearly, she is buried on the side of my house…A friend of mine who is on hospice was looking for someone to take both of his cats, and if he couldn’t find someone , he was planning on putting them to sleep when he passed…I drove 4 hours and picked the two(2 yr old sisters) up and guess what? Their Russian blue…They have the best life and boy do they know it!
Sorry for your loss. Special pets are, well, special and they don’t just happen everyday.
Many tears, that is so beautifully written. I have had the honor of several cats living with me..each marvelously unique. Many prayers for you and your family…they do leave footprints on our heart.
Rado…RIP
To My Two…til we bonk heads again in the After Life
I miss my cats so much
I’m very sorry for your loss
“I am sure many readers will understand when I say he was more than ‘just a cat.” I do. RIP
I am very sorry for your loss, Sundance. Rado-Thomas was a beautiful cat. I’ve been a veterinarian for forty years and I’ve learned that every pet has a unique story in his/her support of their humans. They have a wonderful way of helping us through rough spots in our lives-illnesses, emotional distress, deaths, etc., simply with their love and presence. Maybe in your case Rado’s story involved, among many, hurricanes and personal stresses related to your unmitigated courage. Your life was better because of him. And, our lives are enlightened because of you. My sincere condolences, and may you have only happy memories of Rado once the hurt subsides.
What a handsome guy he was. It’s hard to lose our furry companions.
We also have a rescue cat who is so grateful for her comfy life with lots of love. Cats are the best.
Prayers for Rado and for Sundance and family at your loss.
So sorry, Sundance. Those of us who have lost beloved companions know how badly it hurts. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” (Campbell)
i know your pain, Sundance. Prayers for you.
My heart goes out to you, Sundance, having known personally how truly hard it is to lose a cherished pet and family member.
As our Lord loves us so very much and wishes us to be with Him forever, His Word indicates our loving ‘pets’ … family members, will also be in Heaven. He created them first.
Job 12:10 ~In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
RIP Rado. So sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine your sorrow.
It is never the END for our pets, there are so many verses in the Bible about them being in the afterlife. You will see them all in heaven, I am positive about that. Just remember that when Jesus comes back, He will be riding a white horse. Take comfort in that. ;o]
So sorry for your loss. What a beautiful cat. I have had cats most of my life
but the one I currently have,( in my picture) I have a special connection to.
I am actually allergic to cats but I like them enough to have them anyways
but Chai, he is special, loves to talk, gets into everything. Cats are all so
unique each has such a different personality..
Condolences, Sundance. Having gone through the loss many times, over several decades, we truly understand your pain. Rest in peace, Rado.
So sorry for your loss. It is heartbreaking, but I believe we will see them again.
Rescue pets have a special kind of love for the rescuers. Rest well Rado. And remember the good times with him Sumdance.
Condolences…
Recently suffered a similar loss.
Still hurts.
God Bless ya’ll~!
P.S. – You will see your loved ones again later… ( MY belief, anyway.)
A beautiful, I mean handsome, cat and a fabulously written tribute to Rado Thomas.
Missy done tol’ me dat Mr. kitty be like waitin’ for you from across a long, long bridge…
Farewell,Noble Beast!
I want to send sincere condolences regarding your precious Rado. These dear beings aren’t with us long enough, but the impact they have on our lives is infinite. Our family has been blessed through the years with many kitty companions that each gifted us something special. Most were rescues that turned us into their forever home. Saying goodbye is difficult, but I believe one day we are all reunited. God brought them into our lives for a reason. Merry Christmas Sundance.
Sincere condolences, Sundance. Our pets are much more than just animals. They are friends forever. I’ve always thought they made the world a place worth living in.
RIP Rado Thomas
RIP Rado. The broken hearts mourn your departure. The rainbow bridge is crossed and you will meet again one day.
What a beautiful farewell love story. Six years old, so tragic. RIP Rado. Hurts so much to lose a pet member of the family. Thank God he didn’t suffer. Rado looks just like my Sasha, she was mauled to death by my next door neighbor’s dogs, they dug a hole under fence, she couldn’t jump it, they got my dog, Bess, too. My heart aches for you.
Awe sweet baby Rado, RIP.
Sorry, Eagle.
Earlier this year my 16 year old long haired gray died the same way, dogs next door got loose. Many months later who shows up in the backyard but some young little wild Calico we named Peanut… she’s imprinted on most of our family and sleeps on a different bed every night… I didn’t want another cat, we weren’t “ready” so now we have a new cat.
Very sorry Sundance.
I wish I was not allergic … but I am … my Daddy is not … so … I’ve asked my Sweet Daddy – who is in Heaven … with Schatzi & my Mom … to give Rado the same toe-rubs he gives Schatzi … guaranteed … even though my Precious Mom is complaining 🙃
My heart is sad because of your loss. There are very few things better than being loved by a cat. 💔
Rado was a very special part of your family. We are sad for your loss but rejoice in the wonderful memories you have of this beautiful cat.
Good cat Rado Thomas. Always.
Sundance you were blessed.
