Last night our cat Rado (pronounce as in Silverado) died. We think he suffered a massive sudden stroke.
All animals are unique, God’s creations, and Rado was a very special gift for 6 years. A former stray, he came into our lives unexpectedly as a battle-scarred scruffy guy who had enough of the rough life. So, six years ago he took a chance on us, and from that moment to this we were forever grateful for his presence.
After the initial vet check and neutering, Rado immediately sought to find his place in our family and was uniquely gifted at expressing thankfulness. He lived his absolute best life for the past six years and was reciprocally cherished beyond all imaginings.
As his battle scars healed, Rado blossomed into his beautiful Russian Blue best. A truly handsome fellow, and incredibly unique in cat disposition. His heart was a feature of his personality that exceeded his good looks.
Each day Rado would check on his peeps, making his forever faithful patrol rounds to see what everyone was doing, a trait later called his ‘security checks.’
Once he knew his humans were in their appropriate and familiar places, he would go about doing cat things – napping and enjoying his best life, while remaining watchful and forever thankful.
It is said that pets generally will attach to one member of the household, and I have found that to be true in all cases until Rado. He received a middle name because he just seemed to need one. Thus, in his second year, Rado became Rado-Thomas.
As if he were forever as concerned about equitable devotion as he was for showing appreciation, Rado Thomas loved everyone equally with his full appreciation.
His intentional efforts were uniquely noticeable. Through each and every day of the six years he put time, effort and energy into making sure his adopted humans knew he was thankful.
In the life of Rado Thomas, perhaps an outcome of his origin, he never once took anything for granted. He loved very well. “Those outside days are over,” he would seem to convey, “this inside stuff is just way better.” With that expressed opinion solidly as his foundation he never once again looked wistfully toward the outside; nope, not even a twitch or a flinch. “Right here” was his place, right here.
Rado was an unexpected gift upon arrival and became a visible reminder of how to define ‘steadfast’. “You move, I move, that’s just the way it is human,” and with his companionship, even when it was totally undeserved, that’s just the way he was.
I am sure many readers will understand when I say he was more than ‘just a cat‘.
Rado Thomas will live forever, deeply in my heart.
Farewell my boy, I love you.

.

Sorry for your loss Sundance. Blessing’s to you and yours.
As the bumper sticker states, the more I know about people the more I love my dog. Or in this case cat. Four legged fur bearing animals shed fibers of joy. RIP Rado your memories will live forever. My deepest sympathies to Sundance.
So sorry for your loss Sundance. Thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Cats are very special. 🙏
💔
Sundance, this broke my heart — especially the last line!
Beautiful eulogy. I’m truly sorry for your loss. Be proud you gave him 6 great years.
Prayers Sundance, pets are a blessing and a curse. our hearts have been broken to but we just seem to get another pound pup. start it all again.
Awww… he was a beautiful guy… and what a poignant eulogy…🥰
I have had more than a few cats over the years. All were loved, but a few were very special.
Sundance, you found that special one, who clearly loved you back.
I choose to believe that we will be with them again, and that that reunion will be so wonderful.
What a blessing Rado Thomas was to you, Sundance. And you to him.
“They give so much and ask so little in return.”
….that tweaks at my heart, Sundance. That’s hard news.
As you describe his life and his loving, I think of “How did he get through Ian?”
That had to have been a really confusing and horrible day for Rado…..and his peeps stood by. Kept him safe. Steadfast.
Retired Magistrate here: I am so sorry about your wonderful cat. Several weeks ago we had to put down our 16 year old cat, “Miss B” because she was full of arthritis and jumped off the dryer and broke her leg; she was a mess.
Someone dumped her about 14 years ago and she was full grown when we got her. She had a large tumor on her neck and was skin and bones. We took her to the vet, he removed the tumor and didn’t believe it was cancer; it wasn’t. From then on she was the best cat ever. She would put her paws around my neck and give me kisses; followed me around the yard and “helped” me garden by sitting on everything I was trying to weed. Mice didn’t stand a chance and we had a lot of them.
Last year she got anterior uveitis in her right eye; the vet did everything he could but she ended up only seeing some light out of that eye. That did not deter her, she still caught mice and enjoyed her life. Unfortunately, this last year age caught up with her and the arthritis set in everywhere then the fateful jump that ended with her being put down.
Cats are never “just cats”; they are wonderful members of the family. Again, very sorry for your loss.
Never :just”…they are family.
“Some angels choose fur instead of wings.”
So sorry. You gave him a wonderful home and he knew it.
Truer words were never spoken. Wonderful eulogy befitting these noble furry family members that are forever irreplaceable. Only the pet parents know! Our condolences to the family.
One of His Magnificent Gifts to you and yours as well as His Gift of ya’ll to Rado Thomas.
RIP sweet angel.
I am so very sorry for the loss of your kitty, your hearts must be heavy with the sudden loss. I did not know you had any critters…May your hearts be full for the companionship Rado gave all y’all.
They know when they have been rescued by the humanz….they show their appreciation in the ways they know best and each one knows differently.
I always refer a Treeper who speaks of losing their friend, to Friar Jeremy Wintz’ book “Will I see my dog in Heaven”…scriptural based…he is convinced that we do. It is an easy read. I highly recommend it. More so…it is soothing and comforting. (It is a beautiful book, I have no interest in this book or sales).
Perhaps when the time is right, perhaps another shall wander towards your homestead and pick you…
Thoughts and prayers to you and yours…
He sure was gorgeous. RIP Rado.
R.I.P. Rado. See you on the other side.
When the bible talks about unconditional love, and you don’t quit know what that means, get a pet, it’ll show you!
EXACTLY! No matter what they are always glad to see you when you come home.
That is a bummer bro. I had to put my Catahoula hound/Blue nose Pit mix down a year and a half ago. It was the most difficult passing I have ever dealt with. That dog saved my life when I was out of my mind with acute alcohol/benzodiazepine withdrawal almost six years ago. She stayed right beside me as I shivered in my sweat soaked bed. She came down with an aggressive lymphoma and all I could do is try to make her comfortable. A guy I used to work for told me the only thing to do when a pet passes, is to get in the car and drive to the animal shelter and take one home. It may sound counter intuitive, almost disrespectful in a way to the memory of the best friend you just lost, but it really works. The male and female cats I rescued(started feeding) 7 months ago had a litter of kittens 2 black and one really cool bengal. The parents are a Siberian and a Burmese. Say the word and one is yours(SW Florida is a 2.5 hr drive from me) as I know it would be going to an excellent caretaker.
Sundance- I am so very sorry for your loss.
I know all too well what it is like to use one of our furry friends, whether cats or dogs.
Over the years I have shed more tears for my animals who crossed the “Rainbow Bridge” than for any humans I know.
Rest on sweet boy. So sorry for your deep loss Sundance.
Russian Blue’s are so regal, as was Rado. Rest in Peace.
Awwww Sundance, he was a beautiful creature.
I can feel your families pain within the wonderful tribute you posted.
Solace my friend, to you and family.
Rado-Thomas felt the love you all shared.
🙏🙏☹️
I believe it’s a special blessing to be able to care for one of Gods little creatures. I have a rescue Kitty too. She is so special and I am so sorry for your loss Sundance. God Almighty blessed you and will comfort you. In this time. That’s his Promise. God Bless you Sundance.
I can’t help but think our “stray” furry family members know and truly love and appreciate their new family that takes them in. my heart is with you and yours during this time of great loss.
So very sorry Sundance. We lost our Russian Blue several months ago. I know the heartbreak.
Awe….. Sundance.
Sorry for your loss (es).
We understand your loss & heavy heart, Sundance.
Bless the time you were Graced with Rado Thomas.
“More than just a cat” is definitely familiar to most of us who have adopted cats into our families and even had them born in our homes. Every family pet is precious and unique, just like our children.
We somehow learn something new from each of God’s creatures that He brings into our lives.
RIP, Rado Thomas.
Very sorry for your loss, SD…
🇺🇸💪😀👍
I’m so sorry for your loss.
RIP Rado.
I know you will always remember him with the fondness that only humans with feline or canine family members experience.
I’m sorry for your loss.
‘Just a cat’ or ‘just a dog’— My goodness- NO!
Theses Nobel Creatures make us better humans .
We often speak of increasing their quality of life by inviting them into our homes and family . Actually, it’s them that bring so much quality into our homes, families, and fill our hearts.
I am so sorry for your loss- but so happy that your dear friend lived and loved so well.
We’re so sad to hear about your loss, Sundance. Your beloved Rado Thomas seems to have been an amazing pet. We send our prayers – and lots of love to you and your family.
Thank you for sharing, so sorry for your loss. Reminded me of our kitty Stomper.
My sympathise on your loss of your beautiful blue boy, Rado-Thomas. May he RIP.
I am sorry to hear about your pussycat. I know it’s a sad day. I had to put my boy Kramer down this past July. He was my shadow. I still miss him.
Strays and rescues make terrific companions. Rado died happy. It’s like losing a family member.
Oh man! I am so sorry to hear this and what a wonderful and I’m sure cathartic tribute to Rado. As a fellow “cat dad” I know how hard this is. My Twitter profile has my boy Big Blu on my shoulder but alas the Twitter nazi’s cancelled me. @TheLastRefuge2 was one of my most proud follows. Big Blu may still be on my shoulder out there in canceled. Twitland @Longshoreman_. So sorry brother
Our hearts go out to you at this time. It is a good thing to know the love of God through His sharing His creatures with us and for us. With much love much pain follows.
We are currently dealing every day with the approaching death of our last dog who suffered recently from a stroke at the age of 14. Although needing constant care in feeding and cleaning, he remains ever watchful, and as his cat faithfully watches over him sensing that the end is near, we are blessed by love that flows from these two creatures that God has entrusted to us.
Condolances @Sundance
So very sorry.. My Husband helps at a non-profit animal shelter and every dog and cat that comes in he and I fall in love with.. So hard to lose your animal family member like that.. Hugs
Wife and I have been boarding cats for 25 years. We have some of our own, mostly abandoned. They all have their own personality. You meet them on their terms.
Lost one of mine “Charlie” 2 years ago and still miss him, so understand your loss. But as you remembered Rado, the memories are so important. Sorry for your loss, take care and God Bless, and praying for Rado too. 😹 😿 🙏 🙏
Thank you for sharing this news with us, Sundance.
Those of us who have loved and lost our four legged family members will grieve with your family. What a beautiful lad he was.
We have lost so many and the sorrow has been deep.
But the one thing we always told ourselves was that no matter what else, our animals which we loved so much had the best kitty or doggie lives (too short, as they always are) which they could have experienced.
And that was a comforting thought for us, as I hope it will be for you.
I am so dreadfully sorry.
My condolences for your loss.
They’re not “like” family, they ARE family.
RIP Rado.
we just lost our small little female of 8 years last Saturday, Baby……what a wondrous gift that God gives us allowing us to share in their lives for a small bit and provide love and care to one another as our paths cross
Thank you Sundance, for sharing.. Rado looks remarkably like my male cat Augie, same ears, face, girth, coat and coloring. Augie is a big boy adopted at 3 month of age 10 years ago. Unlike Rado though, Augie didn’t have a rough beginning so he is a very entitled fellow, with a heart of gold. So sorry for you loss.
A beautiful cat, and a tear in my eyes as I read Rado Thomas’s obituary. Rest in peace Rado.
Regards
Climate Heretic
I almost pulled a Kinzinger myself when I read that post.
so sorry to hear.
My sympathy. Pets are our best friends.
