Following three days of negotiations in Florida (Thur, Fri, Sat) between President Trump emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and Ukraine emissaries Rustem Umierov and Andrii Hnatov, the group then held a 2-hour phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
No substantial progress was reported. However, military officials Umierov and Hnatov then flew to meet Zelenskyy in London where French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are assembled to discuss alternatives to ending the conflict.
Starmer, Macron and Merz form the core of the “coalition of the willing,” an EU group who have unilaterally proclaimed they were willing to send the military of the U.K, France and Germany into Ukraine so long as President Trump would backstop their troops with promises of U.S. intervention if things went badly. Trump would not make that commitment.
Zelenskyy Inc, Macron, Starmer and Merz do not want to end the proxy fight against Russia. Together with the EU leadership of NATO, the coalition of the willing want to retain the conflict. However, the problem for the four leaders is that without strong USA support, the citizens of their EU countries will rise up against them.
Even with NATO missiles and transferred technological assistance, they ultimately need the American military in order to ensure Putin doesn’t squish them. President Trump wants the proxy war to end – loggerheads are reached.
Russian President Vladimir Putin does not seem to be paying too much attention to the bureaucratic speeches and instead is continuing forward advancement [SEE HERE] to secure the territory in Ukraine with or without a negotiated settlement.
The Russian Federation has presented its terms; the Russian terms for cessation are known; the rest is up to the EU, NATO, USA and Ukraine to work out.
At this point the problem is over-talking and FUBAR, or, well, a typically European situation. So, Putin keeps going, more Ukraine troops are killed, while Putin awaits the endless conversations that he predicted would result in more endless conversations. To be fair, Putin’s cold approach appears to be a mostly accurate interpretation of what he expected.
ZELENSKYY – “In recent days, representatives of Ukraine held substantive discussions with envoys of the US President – and now National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umierov and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov are en route to Europe. I expect detailed information from them on everything that was said to the American envoys in Moscow, and on the nuances the Americans are prepared to modify in negotiations with us and with the Russians.” (link)
By my count in the past two weeks, Witkoff and Kushner have spent nine days in direct all-day negotiations with various Ukraine officials from various institutions of Zelenskyy’s government, with a one-day trip to Moscow sandwiched between them. Yet, western media continually proclaim the U.S. delegation of Kushner and Witkoff are ignoring the Ukrainians.
This is what I call the ‘paralysis of analysis’, or the part of every negotiation where things get so granular in detail that the larger objective is lost.
While the Ukraine team argues about whether a creek or a railroad track should determine the current point of conflict, another 250 Ukrainian soldiers have their limbs torn from their bodies and lie dead in the mud. Today they will meet in London to argue over telephone pole ownership, while another battalion is fed to the meat grinder.
CNN frames a narrative that President Trump is unsympathetic and frustrated with Zelenskyy:

They are winning, and can continue to grind on until all Special Operation goals are met. I completely disagree with your assessment of Russia’s military goals. It’s goals are to keep foreign troops out of Ukraine and to protect the ethnically-Russian population of Eastern Ukraine. If you actually want to understand Russia’s motivations, you need to learn about the history of the Ukraine-Russia conflict:
In short, Russia’s goals in Ukraine are limited to Ukraine.
Those were Putin’s original goals. He has been explicitly denied those by Western actions, and so he has expanded the goals to achieve the original goals in a manner which meets the new reality. Hence the massive mobilization announced by Russia some time ago. The expanded war effort incorporates the original goals and adds buffer space, plus the near total destruction of Ukraine’s future war-fighting capabilities and economy.
Europe has divided itself from USA. Putin has not made them the back stabbing leeches they are.

Russia could have moved against Odessa and could have taken it, in that its troops in southeast Ukraine are not very far away. But, thus far, Russia has largely confined its fighting to eastern Ukraine. If the current negotiations fail, Russia could indeed move to take the rest of Ukraine, starting with Odessa.

I follow the war using the (usually) daily Front Line Changes reports from Defense Politics Asia. After accelerating rapidly in November, the Russian advances slowed down quite a bit this week, which is why I think that that the two sides are nearing an agreement.

There is situation that is forcing the hand of the Ukrainian negotiators. They have approximately 1,000 of their troops encircled in Mirnograd who can only be resupplied by air. If Ukraine doesn’t agree to the cease fire soon, those troops will have to surrender. I predict that the peace agreement will be initialed and the fighting will stop this week or next. Macron, Starmer and Merz won’t be able to stop it.
Those three will pull out every trick they have.
Their own citizens have some serious issues and questions that demand answers. I believe every one will not be leader for long and just may see their end as everybody focuses on domestic issues.
I think the three you mention are all out of tricks. The only thing they have left is flatulence.
The current document, if it gets any further, is similar to a management summary of a possible agreement. There will need to be a ton of documents to make it into a real Agreement.
That will take time and Russia will not sign a cease fire pending it.

Putin wants a concrete both sides long term peace for Europe but the latter isn’t ready for that.
The most time-consuming negotiations regard the land compromise. Trump’s plan proposes a trade in territory with the Russians giving up conquered territory outside of the Donbas provinces of eastern Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine giving up territory that Russia has not yet conquered within those provinces. Any territorial exchanges have to be agreed to by both sides during Steve Witkoff’s current negotiations.
If the past is a guide, Z will order his troops to hold and fight to the last man. Happened many times before. Never once did it make Z flinch.

This is so absurd that the EU (or certain member states?) thinks it’s going to raise an army to fight on the Russian steppes. Talk about a formula for mass protests. And news alert, the US does not fight a war without air dominance, and to establish air dominance over that battle front would require direct air force to air force toe to toe fighting – so that is not going to happen. Most surprising is that the entire Ukrainian front has not collapsed in en masse surrendering. It can’t be lost on any Ukrainian that they are fighting to protect a corrupt dictatorship/grotesque kleptocracy. Russian volunteers vs the dragooned. If the United States does have a bifurcation in its foreign policy, two sides struggling for primacy, what will be the end result for us of failure in Ukraine? It seems likely the side opposed to the President will suffer losses. Which begs the question, how long can we have multiple foreign policies and achieve any of our stated objectives? The Crimea in the “Before” map should be red.
The Crimea was annexed by Russia in March of 2014 after the Crimea voted to join Russia.
The Ukraine considered the annexation illegal and still does.
NATO has been infiltrating the Ukraine for a very long time.
While I agree that the Crimea is a legal part of Russia, the Before map represents the Ukraine as the Ukraine views the Ukraine.

I am an old man but never in my life have I seen a leader of a country in a serious war spending so much time flitting around the world and talking to so many leaders and politicians while his country is literally in flames. He could have negotiated a deal when the current conflict began in Feb 2022. This would have saved many lives and stopped millions from fleeing the county. Even at the cost of giving up some land this would have been a far better deal than what he is being offered now.
Ellensky knows that when the SMO is over that he will be fresh out of choices.
He’s terrified out of his mind and knows he has to keep it going or he’s toast.
Russia will be holding trials when the SMO is over and he certainly doesn’t want to get caught up in a Russian trial.

What if Putin sent a team to Kiev to take high level hostages – and exit with them. Would Zelenskyy ransom with a peace agreement, accepting all Russian demands already presented?
I don’t think so. Front line soldiers are being “taken hostage” daily, and he does not care.

The pressure is being put in the wrong place to end this war. The pressure should be on the Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressperson Pelosi’s group. Somehow they are intricately involved with Ukraine and are stopping President Trump from walking away. Threats of impeachment I would think.
The quickest path to a peaceful resolution is for Russia to continue to hammer Ukraine – if Russia pulls back while negotiations are ongoing, it will only be an incentive for delay……..

I await the full activation of two comments recently made in the media that parallel this EU BS:
First: It was “reported” that President Trump will withdraw support from the Ukraine if this current effort does not result in an agreement. implication being it is now on the heads of the Ukraine and EU.
There were reports that the US is drawing down assets, redeploying them away from NATO. These are likely the augmentation forces sent to NATO by JoeBama Biden’s Auto-Pen in 2022, as the Trump Lead US realigns (at least until January 2028) US defense focus to the Americas and Asia (you know the PROMISED shift to the East OBAMA and BIDEN never implemented).
That brings us to the second media report that seems to have slipped into the background for now.
Second: NATO has been informed that by 2028 the EU members of NATO are to take the lead in everything NATO, forces, command, financing, et al. As the US assumes “support” role as there is no viable requiring the US to be the lead defending the EU. The article even pointed out the material, financial and technological advantages the EU has over their boogieman Russia.
As stated above, President Trump has already started the draw down. Now let’s see if future defense budgets reflect the same. This new budget seems to reflect a start.
With this new defense appropriations proposal … the reactions from Congress will give a good indicator.
I thought President Trump was going to ditch all support to Ukraine by Thanksgiving if an agreement was achieved. That was my understanding.
What I’m seeing is talks being dragged out and neither side coming to an agreement. Putin has his objective and won’t stray from it. Zero. Zinch. Take it or leave it
