I have a buddy with a Tesla, he thinks it is fine to take almost an hour at the recharge stationer his local driving, or add an hour or two to a trip. When asked about the fact that lithium has gone up from $6,000/ton to $92,000 ton for his next set of batteries, I get a blank stare. He makes great money and can afford it but…what about the common man? The sub contractor who drives a pickup that is ten years old with 200K + miles on it. what will they be able to buy? Afford?

The problem with so many grounded chargers in close proximity is there are multiple situations where the neutral return to substation breaks and all that 120v gets dumped into your ground rod since ground and neutral are bonded, then either your or your neighbors car charger ground is so close it gets electrified and turns all your wall outlets to 240v or 360v on the charger. Goodbye appliances followed by your car batteries blowing up.

Why doesn’t each wheel of a Tesla spin an alternator to charge the batteries as the car rolls forward?
Because an alternator enters resistance into the equation – the energy required to turn those wheels in the first place cannot generate more energy than the resistance of the alternators to produce it.
That would be the ‘holy grail’ of energy production – where more energy is produced than the energy required to produce it, and we aren’t even close to that happening yet, outside of nuclear energy.

We walked home last night from our Friday night dinner routine and the one gas station on this side of town was closed. It was 7:30.
It was closed because they can’t find enough fat young people to staff it, however all I could think was that it fit in nicely with everyone driving EV’s.
I can’t figure out how they think we are going to pay for the EV’s but butt guy has kids with another guy so clearly brain power is not needed.
I am a trained energy auditor and ten years ago when I started the grid was already at it’s peak ability to handle the load it had. Putting millions of cars on it also will bring it all down, especially with the wind and solar power generation that is undependable at best.
Perhaps that is the plan?

I am actually a little hazy myself on the actual mechanics of the whole process, but electricity has to be GENERATED.
It gets generated by the action of some force on a GENERATOR.
WHAT powers the GENERATOR?
Mostly I think it is oil or gas. Sometimes water. Also, but erratically, sunshine and wind.
This leads me to wonder how this GENERATING OF ELECTRICITY is paid for.
Is it really cost effective in any way?
Joe needs to shout at the car companies to lower the cost by $20K or so, and then shout at the wind to blow harder and more consistently. I mean, c’mon, man! Wind isn’t supposed to stop, so quit stopping!
There aren’t nearly enough charging stations in the country for electric cars and my friend who just bought a Tesla has given me the following insights to owning one:

10,000 miles/28 MPG = 357 gallons. In California @ $6.50/gallon = 2,320 per year on gas.
Electric car lasts 10 years plus… Costs $20,000 to $30,000 more… /$2,320 = 8.6 years to be even with a gas car. But at $30K more (13 years +) for a nicer Tesla (or way more) the gas vehicle is way cheaper.
Does not include electric costs at $0.45 per kwhr in CA, or fast charge costs. Hmmm… sound more expensive to go electric to me 😉

I do not think that I will spend $30k-$80k for gas in my remaining days of my life.

It will end up being that only the correct (ie, essential) people will be able to charge their vehicles. “Essential” people will be first in line for everything. Can someone here answer a couple of questions I have? I have seen all this talk about EV’s and charging them. What does it cost to charge one? I know it’s probably way cheaper! But there are so few of these vehicles. What will happen if say we do convert to all electric vehicles? With the demand so high for recharging all those batteries the price will go through the roof! They’ll have us by the you know what and will charge whatever they want for the battery charge! That is if you can actually have a charging station that is up and running due to the blackouts.
