When asked about a statement this week where Stelco Holdings Inc. announced they were laying off 500 workers from their steel plant in Hamilton, Ontario, immediately Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney blamed the United States.
He’s lying. It’s ridiculous. However, that’s all Carney can do at this point.
In reality it is (1) Canadian energy, climate and manufacturing policy; in combination with (2) the specific decision to allow the import of cheap steel from China; in combination with the decision to (3) rebuke U.S requests to stop purchasing that Chinese steel; that has driven out Canadian steel manufacturing.
(1) Canada carbon emission policy changes steel manufacturing. (2) Canada admits to lying about the import of Chinese Steel. (3) Canadian steel manufacturers warn Canada of pending exit. Mark Carney denied all three points. The receipts are in the links right there.
WATCH Prime Minister Carney blatantly lie on camera:
This announcement by Stelco happened on the exact same day that President Trump announced a new $18billion investment in U.S. steel manufacturing in Iowa. {SOURCE}
In fact, in a world full of irony, during a media segment discussing the closure of the Canadian steel plant, CBC cut away to live feed of President Trump who was making the Iowa steel plant announcement. The timing was rather remarkable.
🇺🇸🇨🇦 Hamilton just got the bill for Carney’s trade war.
Stelco is indefinitely idling its cold-rolled and coated lines at Hamilton Works. Up to 500 jobs. Winding down around October 9. That plant feeds auto, agriculture, and infrastructure, and it is one of only three Canadian…

This isn’t quite off-topic because I’d simply like to understand better. What is ‘cheap steel’? What are the grades and qualities and why is Chinese steel crap?
Basically, there are many different kinds and grades of steel. Steel is a blend of different minerals added to iron.
Google: how is steel made…..it is called metallurgy.
✝️😉🇺🇲
Ask Grok instead.
My dad was a metallurgical engineer..he’d love to answer that question. I miss him.
this article might go toward answering that question even though it is limited to the steel in gun safes it talks about the quality differences:
https://www.championsafe.com/5-differences-between-china-steel-and-american-steel-in-gun-safes
and this article goes into the different metallurgical standards comparing Chinese to U.S. steel:
https://www.ellermannsteels.com/Comparison-of-Steel-Material-Standards-n.html
Theirs is a company called US steel which is foreign owned (Japan 2025) and has one factory in Slovakia, the rest are in the USA using USA iron ore. The USA has a major stake in it (Trump). On the other hand, there are many manufacturers of steel items such as gun safes named American Security (article cited) and US Stove for coal/wood furnaces that use both imported and USA steel in their products, no actual dates of when foreign steel was incorporated. All use of US, USA and American brand names should be illegal unless they are 100% guaranteed to be made up of and assembled here in the USA!
My understanding is they did not allow Japan to buy a US steel. Instead, the Japanese company invested. something like 8 billion in the company and it is still US owned. But the initial plan was for them to buy it out.
US Steel is owned by Nippon Steel Co as of June 2025.
Certainly some high level jerks would have liked to sell to Japan, take their cut$ and retired.
When management doesn’t care about the rank and file, we have a problem.
I as in education (HS) for 40 years, and saw the same disregard occasionally from Administration.
My proposal was for Administrators to be forced into the classroom for a full school year once every 5 years.
Call it a Sabbatical, although of a different sort than we think of.
The Administrators would come out of the experience enlightened, and everyone would likely benefit.
Especially the Students.
very helpful link. Thank you
That article explains why my almost brand new washing machine has lost its paint and is rusting 😡
Umm here in Tulsa they make a lot of the washers and dryers, I bought one. Now…..I buy used. Dryer broke over and over again and the paint all peeled off the top. Speed queen is like the old stuff and the price is astronomical, but they don’t break. After 3 new refrigerators I just fix them with better parts.
What happened? We were so good before?
Ditto on Speed Queen washers, but get the original.
I believe they have some models that aren’t as good as the original (older) version.
If I am incorrect, please feel free to point it out.
You are not incorrect. My Speed Queen washer works great as it rusts and yellows, has to be cleaned daily from mold and loses paint. My husband was shocked when I showed him. I never remember ANY Maytag washing machines my parents had, with these types of problems. Bring back well Made in America durable goods!
Nixon visited China…
Try a Maytag next time. Made in America. My previous one lasted 25 years and the dryer, 30. Had to replace them when parts were no longer available. Looked great to the end, never rusted or chipped. Current pair (both Maytag) going on 10 years, look new. Just a thought.
Speed Queen is the Industrial version of Maytag, which is the consumer version. All Laundromats use Speed Queens. When I worked offshore, if the washers went out, I had to fix them. Most washing machines had cement blocks to balance the spinning cycles and were super complicated to work on. Maytag was simple and easy to fix – that’s why their mechanics were so lonely – they didn’t get called.
Maytags are hard to beat.
So is their cheese, aka, “Maytag Blue.” It makes a great Christmas gift. They ship all over the country.
That happened to us. NEVER buy a Samsung washing machine!
It’s the same reason any good from China is basically crap. Bad manufacturing processes, cheap componant parts/material and cheap labor.
Crap in crap out.
The Chinese business model is sell sell sell and maximize profit (build cheaply). So nothing is built to last.
Everything is built to break so they can keep on selling more junk.
Those of us who had purchased quality (American made) products decades ago can appreciate the difference. My brother inherited his Amana refrigerator and it lasted for at least thirty years.
Now? Forget about it. Appliances are so cheap there are no longer repair services. They just sell you a cheap replacement that will break down in five years.
No more TV repairman.
I have a 1939 GE refrigerator in my shop for drinks. I have painted exterior and added stick on rope insulation to door jam. I have a 1955 GE upright freezer in the garage. I expect I am violating some law by keeping the old appliances. The double door stainless steel refrigerator in the kitchen is replaced about every 5 years…bill
I don’t think my brother’s Amana refrigerator (handed down from my parents) ever broke down, either. I think his wife just got sick of the color and replaced it for that reason.
I have a Kenmore over/under washer dryer setup from about 1998 still going on the third waterpump and a couple of door switches.
I’ve got a 1976 GE chest freezer, a Maytag washer and drier a few years newer. Run and run and run……. 🙂
If it last two years I have a co-worker bought a washer/dryer setup with the all computerized boards the washer went down in a little over a year. The co-worker bought my MIL’s thirty year old washer for $100 three years later it’s still going.
Daniel,
Steel is composed of iron ore and a number of other minerals. The type and properties of the steel being produced depends on just exactly what else is put in the steel. For example, to make stainless steel a large percentage of the steel has to be chromium. The more chromium, the more corrosion resistance. For harder steels, usually additional carbon is added to the mix. There are a host of steel types and they all require a specialized mixture of minerals and sometimes other substances.
What the Chinese do is flat-out lie about what they put in their steel. They will claim a rolled plate has sufficient carbon in it to be suitable for construction, for example, and produce documentation that says it does, but the actual plate has been made of cheaper materials and may very well not have sufficient structural strength to do the job for which it was purchased.
I worked building ships in South Korea and Singapore for more than a decade. EVERY steel plate placed in a ship has documentation showing where it was made and what its material components are, among a lot of other information. When I worked in South Korea, their shipyards would often refuse to allow Chinese steel of any type to be used in the construction of their vessels. This was simply because there was no way to know if what the documentation from the steel mill said was in the steel plate was actually there, and the Chinese steel mills had been caught providing falsified documentation numerous times.
If you are not familiar with the term, “quality fade”, look it up. The Chinese are the world’s masters at it.
The C’s of it all

China
Here is the end of the lesson
A perfect recent example of this is the Bay Area Bridge in San Francisco. See https://prosperousamerica.org/cpa-interview-bay-bridge-dangerous-due-to-chinese-steel/
My dad was the Quality Control Manager at Aliquippa Works until it closed down.
I did a stint in the structural steel business in the early 2000’s. When I quoted a job I always made sure it was from steel made in the USA. Also, one can required the steel’s ASTM record with delivery. I always gave the steel’s ASTM ratings with delivery and had a devil of a time with competitors quoting high quality steel, but supplying cheap steel. At that time there was a 20-25% cost savings with low quality ASTM steel being used. Many of the small fabricators and construction companies do this to get the contract.
After working a couple of years, I routinely joked that I would never again rent space in a large building framed with steel. The real problem was the installation of the steel. Most “certified” erectors do a horrible job of welding to keep costs low. I remember doing one last check before final payment of a stair case where the erector I used failed to weld the platforms beyond the “spot” welds used to place the steel correctly in the stair well. It was that discovery that caused me to stop quoting jobs. It simply was not worth the risk. Plus I didn’t like being in an industry where the major route of profitability was from change orders.
I made pretty good money, but it was all luck.
Trump’s involvement and success in building projects using structural steel was what initially caused me to support him. Steel fabrication is by far the most capricious industry that there is. His ability to work in that industry is, in my opinion, almost super human.
Excellent comment, Jeff. I attribute President Trump’s success in that business to a) attention to detail, and b) keeping VERY close tabs on the people he has working for him.
I spent twelve years building ships in South Korea and Singapore and I learned there is one ABSOLUTE rule: you only get as good a job as you inspect for. If you inspect closely, you will get the job YOU want. If you don’t, you will get the job the builders want to give you, and the odds are very good it WON’T be what you want OR what you paid for.
As a metallurgical engineer, now retired at 79, I did a fair number of product liability consulting jobs. Real people, real dead! Chinese was the worst, Brazilian a close second for several years. One job had 3″ plate from a foreign actor that would not even flame cut consistently. They had high cropped ingots to get maximum rolled product and the high end of the ingot would not even roll in one piece. The shrinkage pipe would roll, but the center of the plate was pure oxide. Two dead when a huge boggie made from that crap split and 75 tons of machinery came down on them……. never a single problem of near that magnitude with USA steel.
Welding Chinese pipe and fittings is the same way. Terrible product!
What of the factories built with that trash…
Everything they make is crap. Because all they can do is copy other’s work. They have no original designs.
Ask Florida about the Chinese drywall
Years ago the north bleachers of Husky Stadium were rebuilt with steel. Someone noticed the structure buckling toward the end of completion. Thankfully only a house cat lost its life in the collapse. The headlines blamed poor quality steel from China.
Pig Iron is smelted iron with carbon mixed in.
Steel is pig iron melted for the sake of alloying it with various amounts of certain elements — vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, copper, chromium, nickel, etc. — for enhancing various properties of the steel.
Chinese steel crap might be “alloyed” with mud, floor sweepings, etc. with steel properties degraded more less as expected, hence the term: steel crap.
The last word in SCRAP is CRAP~
Macro economically, these changes were obvious and they were coming for a long time. The fact that Kearney needs to blame the US should not be surprising.. The post global list world is forming up, and those who were caught with their shorts hanging out, well sorry.
Carney is a deeply dishonest man who cares not one whit about Canada or Canadians. He is a globalist to the core and is happily selling out Canada to the highest bidder.
IMO, you might be understating the case with respect to Carney.
Which is why his statement of this steel company “betraying the workers and their families” so egregious and hypocritical! Carney is the betrayer!
The tube of you has several people, Canadians, reporting what CBC won’t. Carney supposedly has been absent a good majority of the time when things concerning his country needed addressed, in person and real time.
Keep them elbows up.
90% of Carney’s wealth is safely invested in the US. That tells you how much confidence he has in Canada.
This is like cutting your nose to spite your neighbor😂😂😂 Let them have it!
44 years ago my late husband bought me a set of US made AMC American steel cooking pots. I’m still using them. Bought a big pot labelled AMC at a market only to realise it was Chinese knock off .Totally inferior quality
We have a set of steel pots and lids more than 75 ears old made by
the National
Enamel &
Stamping
COmpany
and they as serviceable now as when they were new.
NESCO was bought and then trashed by a competor.
Carney literally holds the power to turn things around, but his brain is physically incapable of thinking that way. As the nation fails, Carney only sees a wonderful “market volatility” to be exploited. You can bet your ass that Carney is stealing Canadian money as fast as he can before the whole economy fails. It’s the only way his brain works. It’s the way ALL finance guys are.
Edit: well, that’s not right. There are finance guys who are competent enough to understand the value of investing in something. But these globalist hacks like Carney aren’t that competent.
I’ve been watching a lot of Canadian podcasts on YouTube lately. Many are Albertans and they are all pro-independence as they watch Canada circle the drain. It’s going to get very bad in Canada.
One can’t help but think Carney was airdropped into Canada by the globalists to destroy Canada and attack Trump. The CBC and CTV propaganda, both paid shills for the Liberal Government, are on par with MSNOW and CNN when it comes to facts.
Carney is the Canadian version of the BHO-Biden weapon!
We need a northern wall very soon.
In my retro computing circles, there are many Canadians who believe what the Canadian government puts out. At least one of them is a guy who was born in the USA and “couldn’t stand it” and moved to Canada where he is retired. I told him the media lies and he hasn’t returned a reply since. Some people have a lot of their own identity invested into their Canadian-ness and it’s REALLY hard to hear the truth or to see anything objectively. The comfortable lies are preferred and I find that to be more than a little disheartening to know.
Canada is going to get trashed REALLY soon. They will blame the USA for ALL of it. “How dare the USA put tariffs on us!?” They don’t have ears to hear “Canada tariffs the US worse and still does.”
Brain addled by media and corrupt education is probably the main cause of societal degeneracy.
Oh Sundance, I love reading the comments on X saying Canada should just seize the plant and sell the steel elsewhere.
Anybody that wants to have a good time should just sign up and read all of the nonsense that Canadians spout.
I know some Canadians and they are good people. I would not wish what is happening on them, particularly remembering our nation’s four years at the hands of the rotting vegetable. I have a lot of sympathy for them, but in the end, to quote Rudyard Kipling, “On your own heads, in your own hands, the sin and the saving lies.” No one else can or will do it for them.
Several great Canadians are part of this community.
I hate seeing them suffer for this evil just as we have suffered here in the US.
Our form of gvt slows the tyrants down somewhat sure doesn’t stop them. See john thune for example.
Trumps fault? He walked away the trade deal? Carney’s name fits.
Carney has always been a barker.
Haha.
blame you self liberal socialism carney,
In this story about steel mills, I see what you did there.
…comparing factories.
The only thing good about the Chinese is their food!
Not in China.
Regarding steel from recycled metal as a way to decarbonize steel making.
“That still needs to be heated to very high temperatures, but that can be done with an electric arc furnace (EAF), without fossil fuels.”
This electric produced heat is carbon free since it comes from an outlet in the wall. 🙄🙄🙄
So, for the price of a couple foldable solar collectors from the camping store, an extension cord and a 110 outlet, does that mean i can weld fume free as well?
The difference between two leaders: President Trump vs Prime Minister Mark Carney. Good luck Canada.
Not suprised by the Canadian hockey pucks comments, lying is all he has left.
The media and citizen reaction boggles the mind.
Carney is going to sue the owners of Stelco
Mark Carney is a hero to the globalists as he betrays Canada, Nobel Peace Prize buzz for Carney for his defiance of Trump.
A world gone crazy, upside down.

What was once considered good is now evil, what was evil is now considered good.
For a parasite, the difference between what they do and what their host thinks they do is (after waste) their profit.
If they get the power to increase that difference, they will do instinctively. They don’t think about the future of their host except in the sense of justification: they are superior, benevolent and doing what’s best for the host, so they are entitled to appropriate payment.
So, for Socialists, evil is good and good evil: first, to maximize power & profit, and second, to justify that maximization to themselves and the world.
Carn Evil 9 Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends
Keep it cool, Keep it cool…
Towards the 9:30 mark in the video is the real punch line of Mark Carney’s efforts …. CARBON CREDITS.
He is lining up Canada to generate GDP selling Carbon Credits to the EU … and state the same in the FULL EU Membership application that Canada is going to submit.
lol. Right now the Eww is trying to get out of the “made-out-of-thin-air” carbon credits with China. 😂
Their new economy. Fake carbon credits.
Good bye EU and Canada
Carbon credits: the communist combination of social credit, financialization, green energy and cronyism
…because seizing power and money for themselves is saving the world, don’t ya know?
And once you’re saving the world, all those things you actually wanted to do become enlightened benevolence.
It’s a great leap forward!
Canada does not elect it’s leaders they are appointed. British Westminster system of government design to be operated by one dictator, warlord, monarch what ever name you want to call them.
The difference of Carney faulting US for job loss in Canada. For offshoring of jobs in the US the last 40 years, Trump blamed poor US leadership for the job losses, not the other countries……who were just doing the same “our” country first approach.
The Canadian voters, naturally will eat this up. They have no national identity other than “Not American”. I would call them a hostile country except they aren’t a real country at all. Just an outpost of the globalists.
Preprogrammed commie propaganda on the TV coverage
Carney keep digging his grave deeper
American Revolution the British Loyalists aka Tories fled to what is now Canada.
Sure sure .. but it was also Canadian Militia’s and Canadian Regulars in British Army units that tuned back 2-Invasions of Canada by “US” forces during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
There is a video posted earlier by Pegon Zellschmidt and Homer D, up thread as well as at the end of the video posted by Sundance that contains another major statement v/v the closing down of the closing of Canadian Steel Manufacturers as well as gives away PM Carney’s plans for the Canadian economy.
PM Carney is lining up Canada to generate GDP by selling Carbon Credits to the EU and the others … and state the same in the FULL EU Membership application that Canada is going to submit.
Would not be surprising the Carbon Credit angle was in his pitch to DC Politicians as well as a new twist to the USMCA Trade Agreement that Canada wants added to the USMCA.
The Carbon Credit industry that PM Carney is going to establish has ZERO employees besides the Finacial Firms that do the management as well as accounting (Firms he owns) and a few government officials in Ottawa.
Gee and who else is selling Carbon Credits to the EU as well as dumping steel in Canada?
Could it be PM Carney’s new buddies in China Inc.? Say it ain’t so.
The lay-offs of the Steel workers is a fantasy. The only real work in the Hamilton Steel industry is unloading ships and stock piling various metals in the stock yard. A few boutique steel operations are in production but by-in-large the production has largely been stopped in most plants, and has for years.
WITH DEFERENCE TO WORDMAN:
<The lay-offs of Steel workers is a fantasy>
Maybe, but this is what happens when you “metal” in our affairs.
Chances are this “Cold” rolled steel facility did none of the manufacturing of this steel and it’s all Chinese products of garbage steel.
💯 🎯 And it’s not just them doing it.
https://financialpost.com/commodities/canadian-steel-companies-pay-settlement-steel-shipment-allegations
Honestly, Who cares who he blames? He is part of enemy.
It would appear that Carney and his KARMA are inbound…..and as liberals…..also known as demonrats in America…..always do…..attempt to cover their backside, deflect or project the blame onto others and LIE all the way to the grave!
Fortunately….they have no worries…..it’s not like they have a soul or something to consider or worry about!
And that GOD THING……..hahaha………they have their own……they don’t need ours!
Or…..so they think!
No other country in modern history has had it better than Canada. Financially culturally and militarily they have been a protectorate.
Pride cometh before a fall.
Anyone who has purchased Chinese tools from anywhere can attest to the fact that they are garbage. If you want cheap and don’t care if it breaks then buy Chinese stuff.
#BREAKING: BC Supreme Court Justice Catherine Murray has ruled that banning people from possessing drugs for trafficking purposes is unconstitutional, claiming such laws “discriminate” against drug users and violate their right to “life, liberty, and the security of person.”
How Is this possible?
Well whoop tee do! Mark and his globalist buddies, ramrodded by the Pratt, Chatham and Tarrytown houses are responsible for laying off American workers; going back to beginning in the 1970’s and subsequently creating tent cities and mass drug addiction.
If the American population can’t pull together, get mad dog mean and committed to saving our Republic without being coddled by trash and trinkets; the daze ahead will be much more than most can handle… and that, boys and girls is just what the enemies of your freedom want.
There are rumors that Carney is a candidate for the Nobel peace prize and Time’s “Man of the Year”.
I bet the NYT and others will be awarding themselves some kind of prize for pushing the narrative.
Mark Carney’s sphere of influence is growing in the EU at the same rate it is shrinking in Canada.
Carney, appealing to his liberal base, to care most about saving the oceans, not saving their neighbor’s livelihoods.
Its about what is more important.
Canada is so screwed.
It is Trump’s fault for forcing Mark Carney to eat the Schiff sandwich he made.
Oh c’mon you guys. Liberals know that Carney would never lie or intentionally omit pertinent facts. After all the man is a Banker and Economist!! Elbows up!!!
Thanks for the report and analysis.
