It is that word ‘interregum’ that is at the heart of why there should be Logan Act investigations. These are former senior political and government advisors for Democrat Presidents (including one attending) and other senior politicians and they are in a foreign country trying to influence foreign governments and leaders to oppose rather than work with the current administration. The current fiscal system is broken. The levels of sovereign debt have no hope of getting repaid without inflated currency. The U.S. has subsidized too much unproductive activity for far too long. Shutting off the USAID spigot has caused a bit of unhappiness amongst the unproductive class. Ending the Marshall Plan and the presumed end of paying for European defense has many on the old continent nervous. They want the party to continue.
The private sector allocates capital better than the government and central planners. It’s not perfect, but definitely a better allocator. Cuba and Venezuela offer two good data points on how socialism and central planning / wealth confiscation wrecks resource-rich vibrant economies. Closer to home, New York City will provide a third data point for us to measure capital flight and the intentional loss of the wealthy class and their tax revenue.
President Trump’s team has been focused on encouraging private sector growth while simultaneously holding a federal hiring freeze for more than a year (exceptions for defense sector). His barn-buster tour of Asia and the mid-East, signing multiple investment deals, was quite a sight. I cannot recall any U.S. president ever doing something like that.
