The origin of this issue goes back to 2021 and the relaunch of the Build Back Better European green energy program to fight the non-existent climate change problem. We have been highlighting the consequences within the EU auto sector.
We noted in October of last year, the EU’s mandated fines against auto manufacturers who do not hit their production goals for electric vehicle sales began in 2025. EU automakers unable to meet the regulatory compliance goal began purchasing carbon credits to avoid stiff EU fines. Many of those carbon credits were purchased from Chinese EV automakers, who then turned around and started using the extra EU revenue to discount Chinese cars sold in Europe.
At the same time as Chinese autos hit record highs in Europe, EU car sales are flat or declining. Now, Volkswagen is announcing they lost half their profits in one year and will be cutting 50,000 jobs in the next four years.
(MSM – Europe) – Volkswagen just revealed its operating profit sank like a stone last year, dropping by more than half as tariffs, Chinese competition, and shifting strategies took a serious bite out of the bottom line. And that performance now has the VW Group’s execs reaching for the cost-cutting scissors, including plans to shed 50,000 jobs by the end of the decade.
The German automaker reported an operating profit of €8.9 billion ($10.3 bn at current rates) for 2025. That’s down a hefty 53 percent from the year before and well below what analysts were expecting. Revenue, meanwhile, barely moved, slipping only slightly to around €322 billion ($374 bn). (read more)
This was very predictable. In essence, EU car companies buy Chinese car company carbon credits, to avoid the EU fines. The Chinese car companies then use the carbon credit revenue to subsidize lower priced Chinese EVs to the European car market, thereby undercutting the European EV car companies.
The EU tariff applied to gasoline powered cars or hybrids from China is 10%. That tariff is not enough to stop the imports. The Chinese hybrid autos are substantially less than European car brands, and there’s no financial incentive for China to build auto plants in the EU zone especially when you consider the EU is subsidizing those cars by purchasing carbon credits.
When analyzed from a cost and consequence, the entire EU dynamic toward car companies is a little funny. However, for Germany this is a serious issue, and with the German industrial economy already stagnant – every impact to their auto industry only makes the situation worse.
When you overlay the big picture of their expensive “green energy” costs, the EU find themselves in an unescapable downward spiral. Quite literally, all commonsense seems to have been lost in their green energy chase.
By focusing on energy targets, specifically by trying to force production of European electric vehicles that are not favored by European car purchasers, the EU is shrinking their economy to the benefit of Beijing exploitation.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently travelled to China for a discussion with Chairman Xi Jinping. Chancellor Merz returned to German with a stark message about how the nation needed to quickly get productive in order to meet the far superior work ethic he saw in China.
At the same time, the EU has destroyed its energy sector by chasing windmills and solar farms instead of maintaining the much cheaper coal and gas alternatives. Overall, Europe has made a series of really bad decisions, but those consequences will surface the hardest within the largest industrial economy, Germany.

China’s dominance in precious minerals would be lessened, and we could form a mutually beneficial partnership with multiple African nations. A huge bonus, a lessening of the US taxpayer aid (TRILLIONS) poured into that continent over the last 60 years.
As an aside, it must pain the true German craftsmen at Volkswagen to see their designs, their engineering, be degraded in such fashion. Auto STOP/START, indeed.

Because Germany was poor, very few people could afford automobiles. But to spur the country’s needed growth, Hitler and the Nazis offered the car to the people under a savings scheme known as KdF-Wagen Sparkarte (“savings booklet”). The Sparkarte contained four cards, each with space for fifty stamps. Each stamp represented 5 Reichsmarks paid into the savings scheme. Citizens were encouraged to pay this amount per week, although they could deposit more if they could afford it. Since the car had a price of 990 Reichsmarks, a person required 198 stamps to be eligible for their car. At 5 Reichsmarks per week, this would have taken about three years and nine months.
Hundreds of thousands of people opted into this scheme which commenced in August 1938. By the end of the war in 1945, many people had paid the car off completely, indirectly financing Nazi Germany’s war machine. No German civilian ever received the car they were promised. Rather than fueling the German people’s escape from induced poverty, they used it and the profits from it for something else entirely; war.

As well as Audi… my 2020 A6 Allroad suffers from Electrical issues that the Factory can’t resolve due to their 48Vdc partial EV system that sometimes drains the 12V battery making the vehicle dead. They’ve sacrificed their stellar reputation when they dedicated all their resources to the EV side of the business. And with every software update, things just seem to get worse.
I won’t buy another Audi again. I own 5 Audi’s but nothing newer than 2020, because that’s when Audi lost it’s soul.
I remember when Audi had a faulty ventilation system that put radiator fluid vapors into the cabin.
I would never own an EV. I have two older BMWs and an older Lexus SUV. And the last new car (Honda Passport) that I purchased off the showroom floor was in the fall of 1997. Got 300,000 miles out of it.

I remember our neighbors all gathered under the hoods of their cars to fix the engines. Car repairs created many bonding moments for that generation.
Now, all newer cars have computers that no one can possibly service except for the repair shops and dealerships. My daughter had her rear headlamp and a corner fender replaced from an accident, and the bill was thousands due to the “sensors.”
We also had elections once upon a time, using in-person paper ballots that were counted the same day and matched to signed voter ledgers. We immediately learned who won our elections within 24 hours on Election Day.
Now we have -take a wild guess- computers again, this time using backdoor software programs which result in elections that last for weeks until the (rigged) totals can finally agree with the “harvested” mail-in ballots.
Unfortunately, this will likely hit workers at the VW plant in nearby Chattanooga. The poor, globalist, top-down decisions by corporate executives in Germany will have negative consequences for workers here in America. Ford made similar decisions which led to our state offering all kinds of financial goodies to building their electric truck plant in West Tennessee before realizing nobody wanted to buy electric F-150s. If only these executives paid more attention to what their customers actually wanted rather than fantasies about what the executives think their customers need, their companies would be in much better shape today.
And GM in Middle Tennessee with a huge electric vehicle plant and a monster battery plant next door. Both are being repurposed and the State will lose hundreds of millions.
VW is helping build a huge EV plant in South Carolina for Scout Motors.
Should be done by the end of this year, with SUVs coming off the line sometime in 2027.
Would not surprise me to see the plant closed by 2028.
