According to sources who are speaking to NBC News, U.S. and EU officials are gently beginning to talk to Ukraine government officials about what steps might need to be taken to bring an end to the Ukraine-Russia war. Obviously, for those who do not pretend, we all know the decision to end this conflict comes down to the USA telling Ukraine President Zelenskyy to open peace talks with Russia.
The EU NATO alliance has recently started to show less interest in the maintenance of a U.S. proxy war against Russia, and more open public statements that the current status of a stalemate is unsustainable given the amount of money, hardware and political energy required to maintain it.
Additionally, Zelenskyy is running out of men to throw into the meat grinder; the troops and military leaders are actually defying his orders now.
Therefore, if the Biden administration (State Dept and CIA) concede to the reality, Zelenskyy will have no alternative except to talk to Russia about ending the conflict.
This is the baseline of non-pretending honesty that President Trump has been saying in his remarks about his ability to end the “killing and death” within 24 hours. The reality of the situation is not complex.

The conversations have included very broad outlines of what Ukraine might need to give up to reach a deal, the officials said. Some of the talks, which officials described as delicate, took place last month during a meeting of representatives from more than 50 nations supporting Ukraine, including NATO members, known as the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, the officials said.
The discussions are an acknowledgment of the dynamics militarily on the ground in Ukraine and politically in the U.S. and Europe, officials said.
They began amid concerns among U.S. and European officials that the war has reached a stalemate and about the ability to continue providing aid to Ukraine, officials said. Biden administration officials also are worried that Ukraine is running out of forces, while Russia has a seemingly endless supply, officials said. Ukraine is also struggling with recruiting and has recently seen public protests about some of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s open-ended conscription requirements.
And there is unease in the U.S. government with how much less public attention the war in Ukraine has garnered since the Israel-Hamas war began nearly a month ago, the officials said. Officials fear that shift could make securing additional aid for Kyiv more difficult.
Some U.S. military officials have privately begun using the term “stalemate” to describe the current battle in Ukraine, with some saying it may come down to which side can maintain a military force the longest. Neither side is making large strides on the battlefield, which some U.S. officials now describe as a war of inches. Officials also have privately said Ukraine likely only has until the end of the year or shortly thereafter before more urgent discussions about peace negotiations should begin. U.S. officials have shared their views on such a timeline with European allies, officials said.
“Any decisions about negotiations are up to Ukraine,” Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the National Security Council, said in a statement. “We are focused on continuing to stand strongly in support of Ukraine as they defend their freedom and independence against Russian aggression.”
An administration official also noted that the U.S. has participated with Ukraine in discussions of its peace summit framework but said the White House “is not aware of any other conversations with Ukraine about negotiations at the moment.” (read more)
Ultimately the decision to end the Ukraine-Russia war is not up to Joe Biden. At a certain point the CIA and State Dept will tell him the cost -v- benefit analysis is no longer worth it, politicians are getting too many angry calls from Americans, and it’s time to end the conflict.

Today I was thinking about the ratio of young men killed to the total (pre-war) population of Ukraine. With a population of 40 million, that would be roughly equivalent to the US losing 3.5 million men in a war. Imagine the effect that would have on this country.

A good bit of the very productive farmland is under Russian control. US and EU Big Ag companies control a lot of Ukrainian production, storage, and processing of crops for transport, which is why the US was so eager to have “the grain deal”.
My mother grew up in that area, and loved it there. Actually she was in “Prussia” near “Bromberg” which was on the other side of Poland and the area Hitler invaded in 1939.
Her family were farmers and she always said that they were the “breadbasket” of Europe. So the region is good for growing, including Ukraine and the surrounding countries. I would think Russia has some of that territory already although the old Soviet Union did not utilize the farmland very well.
Very cold winters though. They grew wheat mostly.

There is no reason for Russia to talk to anyone. It has destroyed most of Ukraine’s military by attrition. NATO is running out of munitions to keep Ukraine in the fight. The Wonderwaffe – HIMARS, Storm Shadow, Patriots, Leopards – have had no impact. That is not a stalemate. Russia is on the verge of destroying Ukraine’s ability to resist.
Now NATO wants to talk. But, why should Russia? It’s like the Nazis begging to talk to the Red Army as it closes in on Berlin in WW2. Russia will take over the Russian oblasts of Ukraine and install a pro-Russian government in Kiev, again. When Russia finishes off Ukraine may be dictated by American presidential politics more that the facts on the ground.

From the beginning I never choose sides in this one, except for in the case of the civilians impacted. As far as I’m concerned both sides are equally bad. But also from the beginning I said that Ukraine could not fight a sustained war with Russia. It was obvious to anyone that was paying attention and analyzing the set up objectively that Ukraine simply did not have nearly enough human resources to prevail.
Now after 20 months of “reporting” from the US and other western media that Ukraine was kicking Russian ass and hands down winning the war, we are finally arriving at the point where those one sided fictional “stories” are becoming unsustainable.

Putin never wanted the political cesspool that is Ukrainian politics. It look like it will end up with the Russian-speaking part of Ukraine now occupied by Russian troops with its Russia-leaning inhabitants officially under protection from thug Nazi remnants.

I’ve followed events closely in Ukraine for two years now and CTH has provided powerful insights into the machinations of the Biden administration and the three-letter agencies. Indispensable source of information.

I really wish that were so. After considering multiple sources during the war, I’ve come to the conclusion that the conflict will end when Russia decides it will end. They’ve tried to negotiate in earnest since all the “Ukraine to enter NATO” moves started in 2008 and they have been openly lied to regarding recognition of Russian security concerns. I don’t think they trust their prospective negotiating partners in the first place. Secondly, the Russians have essentially won the grim war of attrition and on the economic front too, and Putin et al are aware of the extreme weakness in the hand they’ve dealt NATO/US. Why would they give up anything while in a winning position? They hold the whip with impenetrable defense lines and almost a 1,000,000 soldiers available, all relatively well trained and equipped. My guess is the Russians will take traditional Russian areas like Odessa, Kherson plus another 10-15% of Ukraine and call it a day. As Sundance suggests, whatever is left will be a neutral (and dysfunctional) rump state. And as we have seen, the Russians aren’t in any hurry. Time appears to be in their side—the longer this goes on, the more pronounced will be the cracks in the EU national governments, and the weaker the Biden Administration will appear.
I’m not happy to think in this manner, but there you are. This evil business was so avoidable. President Trump would never have allowed this to happen. I’m not American but I’ve always greatly respected your country and its people. The theft of his presidency from him and his voters has consequences which will be remarked upon for centuries. Unless a major financial or political collapse accelerates it, I agree with your timeline Julian. There is also some significant pressure on Putin from his hawkish compatriots to “just end it” and so I keep open the possibility he might decide to do just that. Putin has successfully resisted this course of action thus far, however, knowing it would greatly increase Russian casualty rates.
My guess is he’ll stick with the slow patient grinding down of the poor Ukrainian souls hoodwinked into this mess. By letting sanctions continue to grind down the European economy, US control over its Euro colonies is progressively diminished. It’s the old “never interrupt an enemy while he’s making a mistake” wisdom being applied. Like you suggest, imagine how much worse it will be in 14 months for the Biden administration and NATO members. Russia appears to be playing the long game.

The US is “gently talking to Ukraine about the need to negotiate with Russia”? Ukraine is an American vassal and will do what the US tells it to do, given it relies 100% on US aid. If the US should be “gently talking” to anybody, it’s Putin.
And why would Putin listen? He entered into the Minsk and Minsk 2 agreements in order to stop Ukrainian aggression against Russian-speakers in the Donbas without war. The West entered into those agreements under false pretenses merely to trick the Russians and enable the US to more fully arm Ukraine in preparation for eventual war.
The West lied to Putin twice (at least). That’s not counting the lies the West told Putin about the grain deal, the theft of Russian bank assets, the American destruction of Russia’s Nordstream pipelines and on and on.
Why in the world would Putin enter into some agreement with the US when we’ve lied to him over and over again?
No. Hopefully by the time Biden figures out that he needs to speak to Putin, Putin will have already achieved 100% of his war aims including annexing Odessa, Kharkiv and the rest of Russian-speaking Ukraine, gaining control of the entire Ukrainian Black Sea coast and fully demilitarizing and deNazifying what remains of the tiny rump state of Ukraine.

There is another money problem that will soon be looming: Who is going to pay the huge sums required for rebuilding and reconstruction and who is going to benefit from this? The amounts being bandied around far exceed those of the war. I sincerely hope is it not going to be large companies with the right political connections and offering many kickbacks nor the politicians who have increased their wealth through the war
And the ‘world’ will help to rebuild ‘poor Ukraine’ while contractors and politicians make a profit! But who will help to rebuild the Donbas and other areas Russia came to the defense of that the UN, NATO, EU, and the US allowed to be shelled and shellacked since even before 2014 by Ukraine? Will those areas receive ‘humanitarian aid’ and rebuilding aid, etc., like Gaza and Ukraine will?

The war only made Russia stronger. With the sanctions/embargo against Russia, Russia did without or started to produce themselves. Russia is just fine, EU and US, not so much. However, the loss of life and squandered treasure is evil along with going to war over a foreign border while our US border is mocked daily.
Maybe the chances that the Isreal conflict could become a multi front war with lots of moving pieces may allow for lots of areas of grift and theft for politicians instead of basically, just one with Ukraine.
