If global (non BRICS) economic contraction is akin to a western economic depression, I would argue the consequences are identical. Then, when major economies are in a state of shrinking and the citizens are feeling the horrible effects, something large is needed to change the economic equation.
With central banks raising interest rates to achieve the policy supporting contraction, the option for ‘housing starts’ to change the dynamic is removed. That leaves, ‘war’.

The whole trend of force structure post Viet Nam has been to reduce front line combat presence (as well as greater dependence on spec ops in some respects). Major shift to precision-guided, stand-off weapons and (obviously) networked sharing of target information.
In my immediate experience, the whole female in the cockpit political effort when initiated was a major cluster [xxxx] when initiated. Standards eventually prevailed and quality pilots are now making the grade (male and female).
It is my firm belief the American people will shift like Quicksilver in its position once females are committed to frontline combat in large numbers should hospitals become populated with dismembered women and rape reports following capture escalate.

Perhaps the TPTB aren’t long-term thinkers. Perhaps they are short-term maximizers who are also trapped by questionable decisions they have made in their histories (i.e., compromised). I encourage Mr. Sundance to read the entire article and to read the books mentioned in it: By getting rid of confiscatory taxation and making a climate favorable to entrepreneurs in the post-war era (led by Senator Robert Taft of Ohio), and by stopping a New Deal revival, the American economy generated employment for both returning soldiers and those employed in the armaments industries.
It took a few years, but the peace-time economy came roaring back, and eventually it led to the housing boom.
Housing does not necessarily create a booming economy at the beginning, but can become part of it, after employed people have worked several years and have saved money and then are able to purchase a house of their own.

Btw..as a friendly aside…one of my grandfather’s was a well known European philosopher born late 19th century who lived through most of the 20th century. He was friends with many folks including Friedman, Von Mises and Von Hayek. Also knew Einstein. Anyways, as a kid I had the opportunity to look at some of his correspondence. “Granny” had to interpret since most of it was in native Austrian national language – German. I didn’t understand much at that time but the memory is irreplaceable. Pops graduated from Yale with a BS in economics and went on to be the Sterling Fellowship honoree in the Yale graduate school – when that meant something decades ago. So I had some early exposure to the infamous field. Not questioning your thought process – just looking at it as a historical stream with antecedent and subsequent events that shaped future outcomes.

We can add to the nice history lesson that in WW I and II we were fairly self-sufficient in food, oil, steel making etc. Now?
We don’t make basic steel any more, we import it and we do make some specialty alloys. Biden shut down the energy sector so we are now again dependent on imports. We are food self sufficient but not if we keep burning down processing plants. We make few computer chips, we make no pharmaceuticals and few other medical equipment, and we generally outsource our computer programming.
I for one would love to know how any person with a single rational thought thinks we can fight any war, let alone one against Russia and China. We’d be out of war material in less than one month.
Our planes, tanks and defense systems are too complex to sustain on a battlefield. Russia specializes in building weapons that can lay in mud, be picked up and still shoot. We do not. War is dirty. We haven’t come close to winning any war since WW II.
So what is really going on? A mass depopulation event? A coverup? Simple rank incompetence and stupidity?
I really can’t say because possibly it’s all 3.
I mentioned before of something I read. A German Tiger tank is equivalent to ten Sherman tanks. A German tank commander was asked if that it true ,Why did Germany loose the war. He said because we always had eleven Sherman tanks.

Finally, explain to them they are risking nuclear war, and there won’t be a state or district left to represent (and milk for cash) when it happens.
