The House of Representatives continues efforts to elect a Speaker of the House. Republican candidate Kevin McCarthy failed in his first-round effort on the floor in dramatic fashion. A group of conservatives blocked his path amid one of the smallest GOP House majorities in history. Democrat Hakeem Jeffries had the highest overall number of votes, but still not enough to become speaker.
As noted by Politico, “In a stunning moment of chaos on the first day of the new Congress, McCarthy and his allies will now attempt to quell the revolt, preparing members to take repeated votes as pressure mounts from their colleagues. It will mark only the second time since the Civil War that a party will need multiple attempts to choose its leader on the House floor — with all business in the chamber, even the swearing-in of members, halted until a speaker is chosen.”
Voting continues, video below. UPDATE After Three Failed Votes, the House is adjourned until noon tomorrow:

Boebert on warroom: The McCarthy funding apparatus has anti-McCarthy voting members being called by their DONORs, insisting they vote for McCarthy.
Yep.
The “govment” will keep the ballot stuffing show going just long enough for a democrate to be elected speaker.
Pelosi?
What’s the difference between Pelosi, and Pelosi-owned (McCarthy)?
Nan-Xi has proven her statement.
Love the picture of the house. Every seat is occupied whereas in most occasions other than the State of the Union address or a foreign dignitary appearance I would imagine half the time there is less than half the members even listening to speeches or debating.
the majority of time I would imagine these represent of the people are dining, greeting lobbyists or back dooming deals on the sly.
pure political theatrics.
only important when political power is involved, doing the people’s work not so much.
Have only been physically to the house of representatives once, as an adult.
I was 19. Went through the Capital building tour, and you could see almost see tumbleweeds blow through the room.
Doubt that there were 50 reps there that afternoon.
Went back to my hotel room, turned on the TV later in the evening.
State of the Union speech. Full house. It was Gerald Ford, so it’s been a minute.
But, some things never change.
I notice the COVID charade seems to be over.
Give it a minute the sheeple have been primed for loss of freedom.
When I was a kid many decades ago, my parents took me on a vacation/tour of DC. I was pretty young so my parents told me what was happening afterward. We sat in the gallery and watched a half empty house chamber with members of congress walking around talking to each other. After a while, the minority party suggested they vote on breaking for lunch. The vote was held and the minority lost. Representatives went back to wandering around talking to each other. Twenty minutes later, a member of the majority proposed the same. They voted and the majority won. This formed a lot of my opinion on DC. Political power plays rule even in the little things.
In fairness though, committee and subcommittee meetings happen all the time. There are a lot of committees and subcommittees. Enough that many are members of multiple ones. A representative can’t physically be in committee and in the main chamber.
Democrats ready to be splitting their votes if Pelosi nominates Greta.
Newsmax once again showing their colors. Congress critters brought on were those pushing for McC. Chris Salcedo started trolling them, hitting then with the failures of the RINOs they were supporting.
Spicer finally brought on Boebert. First time today I heard the reasoning behind not voting for McCarthy. Well done Ms. Boebert.
Same with The Five. Each of them said the Repubs were making fools of themselves. Sheesh.
Well, they get their talking points from the Associated Press,
so no surprise there at FNC.
They should be req.’d to sit on oak benches, like citizens called to court are. All should have calluses from sitting on their asses for the last 50 years.
And yes if worse comes to worse, I think jordan would biggly be the best for #3 in line over McCuckthy.
I am surprised the rules were not changed to Ranked Choice.
While this is McCarthy’s ‘first’ attempt at becoming Speaker, it is the 3rd plus time McCarthy’s faction has had power. It is time for him / them to go. If the US had proportional representation like some European countries, that faction would be a minority Government. If McCarthy had an ounce of class, he would have stepped aside after the last election debacle and formed a workable coalition but instead he would rather go down with the ship. The MAGA Republicans have no choice but to fight with victory being their only option while McCarthy can always become a lobbyist.
“Smallest GOP House majority in history” because that’s what the GOPe wanted. Let them eat crow, now!
bet there are Republicans who would actually cross over and vote for Jeffries
I don’t see the problem here. Why should election of the Speaker be a forgone conclusion? Me, I’d rather see the Party hash out its differences to arrive at a decision. The idea that the Speakership is a particular person’s “turn” is absurd.
Next, work on reforming the legislative process to reduce the influence of corporate lobbyists, require advanced disclosure of contents of bills before votes, and ending omnibus packages, among other corrupt practices.
These are my views.
