The state visit by Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping in combination with USTR Jamieson Greer’s responsibilities within the U.S-China trade program, meant that Greer had to defer a visit to Mexico to work on the USMCA replacement. However, bilateral trade agreement discussions at a technical level remained on track and progressing during Xi’s visit.
The U.S. and Mexico delegations have now expanded the bilateral topics from 54 sections to 90 sections. This indicates significant agreement on the major components of the framework and now the smaller overlapping topics that enmesh with the bigger topics are brought in.
Greer shifted focus toward the Chinese trade aspects due to the timing of the Xi-Trump summit. USTR Jamieson Greer is expected to be returning to the Mexico trade talks in about a week.
For the interests of the Mexican side, the main focus is seeking favorable reductions in the section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles. However, the digital platform section and intellectual property is also a priority being negotiated by team USA.
MEXICO CITY, Sept 23 (Reuters) – The fourth round of trade talks between Mexico and the United States will not take place next week and could instead be held in October, a senior Mexican official said on Wednesday, as the two countries juggle a shifting diplomatic calendar.
Luis Rosendo Gutierrez, Mexico’s deputy economy minister for foreign trade, said the delay was due to scheduling conflicts, including Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States and the upcoming G20 summit. Despite the pause in formal rounds, Gutierrez said technical coordination with the US Trade Representative’s Office (USTR) remains a “daily” occurrence.
The negotiations are seeking an interim bilateral bargain under which Mexico could win relief from some US tariffs while addressing US demands on areas including automotive content and Chinese investment.
“Our priority is reducing Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles,” Gutierrez told reporters following the bi-national convention of business group the American Society of Mexico in Mexico City.
The negotiation agenda has expanded from 54 issues to nearly 90, which Gutierrez described as the natural evolution of complex topics such as digital platform regulation. (read more)
As USTR Greer noted in interviews Thursday and Friday, the U.S. is very comfortable with our current position toward Canada, even without any further trade discussion. We have expanded reciprocity tariffs against Canadian sectors, and we maintain baseline tariffs against core component manufactured goods, steel, aluminum and autos.
In January 2027 those baselines will be enjoined with 50% reciprocity tariffs on Canadian autos, thereby expanding the overall tariff policy. [U.S. will impose a 50% tariff on all Canadian automotive and steel imports, effective Jan. 1, 2027, after trade talks between the two nations collapsed. (source)]
There is no urgency to change anything toward Canada, and Greer is now focused on finishing a direct bilateral trade agreement with Mexico. Once that agreement with Mexico is confirmed, then the termination of the trilateral USMCA can be executed with virtually no disruption between the U.S and Mexico. All the friction points, pain and economic conflict will be unilateral on the Canadian side.

I work for a family owned automotive supplier in SE Michigan and I along with 4 others have had our hours(pay)reduced 20% since Memorial day week this year due to perceived uncertainty in the market. The Dollar General here in the US in every town across some of the poorest counties of NY. I can drive for an hour and an half and every town I pass has one! Gouging, intentional computer errors to hike your bill. BS sales that don’t get entered into registers and refusals to take bottle returns, which is state law. No other businesses in these towns either, except maybe a gas station.
Our local Dollar General is a blessing. Saves me about 20 miles of driving when all I need is a quart of milk.

During his political ascent in 2015 and 2016, Trump exploited issues that revealed a disconnect between popular and elite opinion, and trade was prominent among them.
His protectionism — expressed in pungent and excoriating terms — poached traditional Democratic ideological territory and appealed to the working-class voters, allowing him to crash the traditional Democratic “Blue Wall” states.
In sheer political terms, what could go wrong.
Well, nothing — until he got his way.
It turns out that Liberation Day was the beginning of the end for any appreciable political support for his tariff policy.
The assumption has usually been that the politics of tariffs favor protectionism — the benefits are very visible and focused for specific sectors and businesses that are highly committed to maintaining them, while the costs are widely dispersed among people who won’t care so much.
In this case, though, the logic has been turned on its head: The costs felt by people with no direct stake in protectionism are tanking support for the tariffs overall.
On top of this, there’s the fact that Trump won his second White House term promising to reduce prices — and import duties increase them.
The Yale Budget Lab estimates the costs to households at about $1,000 a year.
The shambolic and arbitrary rollout of the tariffs, as well as the dubious legal basis for many of them, hasn’t helped, either.
According to a poll that the libertarian Cato Institute conducted with Morning Consult, 74% of Americans say the tariffs increased the prices they pay, including 66% of Republicans.
After the latest trade spat with Canada, a Politico/Public First poll found that 56% of Americans think the tariffs on our northern neighbor were “wrong.”
According to a CBS/YouGov survey, people prefer a candidate who opposes Trump’s tariffs over one who supports them by 26 percentage points.
Democratic Senate candidates are promising to reverse Trump’s tariffs; even the card-carrying protectionist Sherrod Brown is critical.
And some Republican candidates in states with lots of trade with Canada have dissented from the trade war with Our Friendly Neighbor to the North.
The Midwest is a trouble spot for the GOP in the midterms, and it’s not hard to understand why.
China cut its purchases of US farm products in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs, and the farm sector has been slammed.
Even if Trump’s theory of the tariffs is correct — that higher import duties will lead to re-industrialization — the policy involves immediate disruption and increased costs in exchange for a protectionism-driven build-out that will take years to be fully achieved.
Long before then — indeed, by January — an opposition congressional majority hostile to the president and his tariffs may be entrenched in Washington.
In politics, it’s often “careful what you wish for.”
Especially if that involves imposing higher prices on an inflation-fatigued public.

This video interviews a Canadian named Jason James (host of the Brave New Normal podcast). What struck me is how hard he, even as a self-described Canadian liberal, is trying to wake up his fellow Canadians as to what’s really behind all of their anti-American sentiment. He definitely says some eye-rolling things, but overall, I think his message is decent and I hope Canadians are listening.
He explains that Trump’s actions are fundamentally about trying to cut off China at every corner, both internationally and domestically, and that thanks to Mark Carney’s propaganda, Canadians have responded with a narcissistic and insecure Canadian perspective.
Here are a few bits from the video (paraphrased and edited):
“So, look guys, for people watching this, I’m not a MAGA guy. Like, I’m a classical liberal, not liberal capital L. I mean, I’ve I come from the left. It’s just that I’ve been around long enough and I’m old enough to recognize how the world works. And this Liberal Party, this capital “L” Liberal Party, there’s nothing liberal about them. And I think that Canadians have been swindled and hoodwinked into believing that it is possible for us to have a trade relationship with the EU and China like we have with the United States.

It’s not a matter of “I don’t like Trump” “he’s Hitler” “He’s a Nazi” he’s all these terrible things, therefore because we disagree with him ethically or morally or ideologically, we’re going to just, you know, elbows-up our way through this. No, guys, the world is not predicated on how you feel. It’s not predicated on who you agree with. It’s predicated on the best trade agreements that you can come to, the best partnerships that you can muster up. And for Canada, the best partnership we have ever had is with the United States, no matter who was president.
So we have to get back to thinking that way. What’s best for us? What’s best for us is Fortress America. Canada, the United States, Mexico, Latin America, all one continent. All of us trading between each other, showing a strong united front against China. China doesn’t want to trade with us. They’re not interested in buying dairy from us. They they don’t want anything from us. You know what they want? They want their foot in the door because we are the gateway to the United States. We are their doorstep. That’s what they want.
On a larger scale, what we’re seeing right now is, and I hate to use this word, a conspiracy to destroy the United States economically. Look, the United States, for all of their flaws, for all of the bad that they’ve done in the world, they are really the last bastion of true freedom, true free markets, true uncontrolled, or relatively uncontrolled, capitalism.
I hear the argument all the time and I’ve made the argument myself that American capitalism over time has in a way transformed into a form of fascism. But what prevents this from going into a full-on tyranny is a Constitution and a Bill of Rights that lies at the foundation of their country.
So you think about people like Mark Carney, what do they want? Well, they they they want unlimited, unrestricted access to markets, right? They want to be able to manipulate the markets in whatever way possible. Well, the United States has a wall. There’s a Constitution and a Bill of Rights, and eventually they hit that wall. Not all the time…you’ve seen defense contractors, for example, or BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street. They’ve figured out ways to get over the wall. But the wall is still there. China doesn’t have a wall, and that’s what’s so attractive about China to people like Mark Carney, George Soros, and others.
There is a global conspiracy to crush Trump, specifically, but also the United States Project on a larger scale. And you can see the way everything is aligning. The entire entire world is aligning itself (aside from Latin America) against the United States right now. And it’s because they are the last hope for freedom. And I really do mean that.
It’s not like we’re capitulating to Trump. It’s that it’s what’s best for us. What we have to offer goes hand-in-hand with what the United States wants. They want resources, look at what we have. Potash, oil, gas, softwood, lumber, steel, uranium, lithium. We are sitting on the largest land mass on Earth as a nation. Think about what they could do with that. We have so much to offer, and we’re cutting off our nose to spite our face. We’re decapitating ourselves to prove that we’re better at killing ourselves than Trump could ever be.
This is all self-injury here and I think what Canadians really need to do is we need to have a cultural reckoning. We need to start to face the things in ourselves that are ugly and gross and spiteful in terms of our relationship with the United States, because we have always had this insecurity about being little brother. And we need to start to face that and deal with it. And if we don’t want to be little brother, it’s about stepping to the table as an equal partner. Not running away, not running to the EU, not becoming a puppet for China. It’s about stepping to the United States as as grown men and saying, “Look, we’ve got a lot to offer you. Let’s talk.
In closing, we have to get out of this mentality of, “Oh, well, the Americans were mean to us, and so we’re going to be mean back.” They’re not being mean. What they did was they said, “Listen, we’ve held your hand for a long time, and you’re a big boy now. It’s time for you to walk on your own.” They were saying, “Look, Canada, you’ve got a lot to offer. Come to the table. Let’s have these discussions. You can walk on your own two feet. You don’t need us to give you handouts anymore.”

Occasionally I see Grier in an interview where he looks a bit physically tired but this is understandable given his certain grueling travel requirements. He’s another example of “here am I, send me.” But the guy must be livin’ his best life right now because he is really good at this stuff.
I don’t like it at all. I feel like this diplomatic visit might have given leeway to our adversary to continue some businesses through Mexico, sans continued precursors! Any agreements that may go around shipments to arrive, make fentanyl and get it across our order. These bilateral deals need to be done. Why are we waiting until 2027 to enforce tariffs on Canada? Right before or after elections, drop Canada off the trilateral agreement.
Just let Canada rot on the vine.
I made the mistake of clicking on the link to the Reuters article which was on MSN webpage. I then scrolled down looking at some of the “headlines” on the MSN page.
OMG! I don’t believe anyone could lie and twist headlines any better than MSN. What a freaking joke. It’s TDS on steroids.
I don’t read or click any of these garbage sites like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc. but I’m sure most of the U.S. population does and that’s why we are where we are now in this country.
