China likes to blend government interests with its business interests. Chinese businesses are required to spy on behalf of the Chinese government. It’s the biggest reason why Chinese PCB companies exist as they do and why US companies cannot operate in that space.
In the retro computing world, being able to have PCBs fabricated for cheap is important to us. We rebuild extinct hardware. We adapt old systems to current environments. US companies cannot operate in that space at all. For what I would pay a US PCB fabricator, the hobbyists would all stop entirely. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, you will be shocked. JLC or PCBWay will produce the designs, populate the boards and ship to your door for well under $100. A US maker will charge thousands of dollars to do this.
This can’t be the only form of strategic dumping they do. What the retro users do is generally safe in that we generally keep with ’80s technologies meaning no networking as we know it which means no capacity to spy and no capacity to steal inventions. But these companies do not exclusively serve retro computing. They serve US inventors as well.
It won’t be long before Canada does what China does. What does China do to get around tariffs?
Well they create US companies which are actually Chinese owned and operated. They are their own importers. They pay the tariffs. They repackage the orders for people like myself and we never see duties or other forms on our parcels as you typically would when receiving things from other countries.
Could Canadian companies do this? Yes but it’s hard to imagine that today. The Chinese will not let their proxies compete with their party member loyalists in China. But the Chinese will respond to changing challenges.
Keep in mind dumping isn’t only about selling lower than US competitors, it is about suppressing them. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of the flock and other surveillance tech is filled with Chinese hacked chips. The costs of US manufacturer is just too high.

I agree with Trump and his people on the substance of the issue. Unfortunately the Canadians are likely to prevail in their political games. American consumers are already unhappy with high prices and this will only make the situation worse …. two months from the mid-term elections.
