Earlier today following a meeting in Washington, D.C., between Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, both representatives delivered remarks to reporters. There are no details provided, however, within his remarks, Greer says he is confident that a deal has been reached as they work to finalize the details.
USTR Greer notes the significant trade barriers between the U.S. and Canada appear to have been resolved. However, the devil is going to be in the details. Greer noted they are putting together the documentation that will allow him to brief President Trump and congress on the proposals. “While we certainly have eliminated some of the irritants we have had over the past several years, we are also taking a strong foot forward,” Greer remarked. Given the antagonistic nature of Canada and their dependency on retaining an assembly economy with access to the U.S. market, it will be interesting to see what non-tariff barrier positions the Canadian government is willing to put forth.
There is a lot of optimism in media surrounding the tariff pause and the remarks that have followed; but I would caution interested parties to be aware of the scale of the divide between the two sides.
President Trump’s remarks from today about the Canada-U.S. trade position are below.

The Moose opinion.
Ya, I didn’t understand the ‘victory’ on Keystone. In this case it was always Canada waiting on US>
I’m interested in the details, especially in light of past remarks by Carney. Don’t see a compromise unless Carney decided to face reality.
Carney despises President Trump and despises that he, Carney, has been essentially reduced to the role of “supplicant”..
He is a little man, a globalist poseur, who sees himself as great and powerful.
But he is not and never will be, because he looks upon Canada’s people and sneers, spitting on them from a great height….and worse. He cares nothing for Canada. His allegiances are elsewhere. This I firmly believe.
Contrast and compare with the man putting the citizens he works for (for no pay) first, and loves them as he loves America.
He has put an able man, Ambassador Greer, in charge of doing what is best for us.
It shall be done.
“Canada and their dependency on retaining an assembly economy”
CanaIkea.
Wordman quality.
My suspicion is that negotiating with Canada will be a lot like negotiating with Iran.
I’m confident that President Trump won’t get rolled, but Canada most certainly will give it the old Canucklehead try.
He’s the best. Let them think they have a deal then pull the rug and make them concede more. No deal final until the ink is dry.
I hope Greer and PT are right about this ‘great deal’ with Canada over trade. But why does it feel like trying to get a great no-nukes open-Hormuz peace deal with Iran? It always sounds like we are on the cusp of a deal, and then we aren’t. When this Canadian trade deal negotiation drags on for months with the tariffs paused and no signed agreement, then what?
Yeah, yeah….. the deal only covers 5% of total trades. Once a bilateral trade agreement is finalized with Mexico, the US will decline to renew USMCA leading to a 6 month clock for 100% exit. This current deal foretells what Canada will face in early 2027.
