Recently rewatched The Perfect Storm. Always bothers me that the Coast Guardsman was lost at sea due to the unbelievable arrogance of that yacht captain. I know that was fiction, but yeah, the Coast Guard takes enormous risks, even for (especially for?) those who shouldn’t even be out there.
Can it be that 25 years have passed?

It’s the same for me Betsy. I remember exactly what I was doing, where I was and who I was with. I have to say in my group of friends and family no one has forgotten 9/11. The youngsters that have come along in our family since 9/11 have been told about it quite thoroughly when they are old enough to understand it. I will never forget that day and the aftermath.
I was overseas,.Cjzak. My memories are crystal clear. Which include the next day especially when people in my Welsh town all stopped by the gift shop I was working in to offer their truly heartfelt sympathies. Such sweet and lovely people…

I can’t remember the name of the entity in Britain which used to…and still may…run a contest for people to submit opening lines to grab the attention of readers. Their only proviso was that the lines must be absolutely appalling. So many entrants, just a bit of fun, and, oh MY 😂 😂 😂, were they ever!!
Also, decades ago the now appalling upholder of all things DEI, war, climate change, and government propaganda…the BBC….broadcast many productions of many of the Lord Peter Wimsey books. I remember watching these on PBS, and I was captivated.

Those were my introductory books to fabulous British mystery. I read close to the amount you did, but not quite. Back in the day I use to read about 5 books a week. I went through a lot of authors. Loved it.
The last 15 yrs I have spent way too much time on politics, that’s when I put my Clancy books up. No need to read Clancy when we are living it.

“There’s a job title almost no American has heard of, and for 23 years it’s been running our foreign student system.
It’s called a DSO. Designated School Official.
When a foreign student wants to study here, they need a form called an I-20 to get his visa. The government doesn’t issue that form. The school does.
And the school picks one of its own employees to be the DSO. That employee is the one who’s supposed to notify the government when the student stops showing up to class, drops below a full course load, or just disappears.
So the school hands out the ticket. The school is also the only one who can blow the whistle on the guy holding it. And every time it blows that whistle, it loses a tuition check.
I’m not calling these people crooks. Over 24 years I dealt with plenty of school officials who took the job seriously and did it right. Most of them do, But you cannot run an enforcement system that only works when the people inside it are willing to cost themselves money.
And nobody was checking their work. In 2012, the GAO pulled 48 school files at random. Thirty were missing required paperwork. ICE couldn’t produce two of them at all. Seven years later GAO came back and found ICE sitting on 3,281 school recertification applications, when the law says every school gets reviewed every two years.
Here’s the part nobodyever talked about.
Until now, a foreign student’s entry record had no expiration date on it. It said “duration of status.” they could stay as long as he was enrolled. And who decided whether he was enrolled? The school. There was no date to run out. The clock sat in the registrar’s office, THAT WAS NOT A TYPO.
That ends next Monday. Starting September 15, students get an actual date. When it passes, they’re out of status. No school official required. No government finding required.
And if you read the fine print DHS published with the rule, they cite the GAO’s own findings about the risk of leaning on school owners and school officials to police their own students.
23years on the honor system. It took until next Monday to put a date on it.

U.S. Destroys 5 IRGC Tankers After Iran Targets Another American Warship

TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 8, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the past two days.
The U.S. warship successfully evaded the attempted Iranian attacks and continued to patrol regional waters. No American personnel were harmed.
In response to Iran’s most recent failed attacks, CENTCOM destroyed the IRGC crude oil carriers M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman as well as M/T Derya near Kharg Island. American forces directed the crews to abandon ship before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable.
Iran has used the tankers as part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies. Iran has no means by which to defend these vessels.
On Sept. 5, CENTCOM forces destroyed three Iranian crude oil carriers after the IRGC tried to attack a U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer. All IRGC attempts against U.S. Navy warships have failed.
And now Iran is launching missiles at Jordan.
Iran isn’t the brightest crayon in the box. Attacking their ancient neighbors is never a good idea.
But, for 47 years, the Mullahs didn’t have to think about that. Times have changed.
