If we read between the lines in the latest update from President Trump emissary Steve Witkoff, we can clearly see the negotiations have entered into that critical phase where payments to all of the stakeholders will determine a successful outcome.
Pragmatic people have long predicted the ultimate solution to the bloodshed will only be determined once western interests get to the point where negotiators propose a long-term plan for continued financial benefit. Too many people, “stakeholders” are making money from the conflict.
From a western perspective, support for the Ukraine conflict is based on money. Therefore, the solution to the conflict requires a system where the western opportunity for financial benefit continues.
Written in polite diplomatic terms, the continued payments are identified as “the prosperity agenda which aims to support Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, joint U.S.–Ukraine economic initiatives, and long-term recovery projects.” This is codespeak for the U.S. Senate and EU will retain a financial mechanism to exploit for personal benefit.
From the language it appears that Witkoff and Kusher are confident they can construct a financial reward system for western banks, investors, politicians and Ukraine officials that will retain the benefits of war without the ancillary ingredient of bloodshed.
If the U.S. delegation can pull this off, then Russia can gain the territory they want, corrupt Ukraine officials can keep skimming investment money, the EU can retain the power it wants to extract financial payments, American politicians can use the “long-term recovery projects” for money laundering and quasi-public/private investment banks can benefit from the exploitation of Ukraine resources.
Again, from a ‘western geopolitical perspective’, the territorial issues, security guarantees, EU membership status and the position of NATO are downstream details once the larger payment system is organized. Put another way, they are down to the stuff that really matters, the money.

From the Russian side of the equation the war is about ideology, national security and proactive defeat of western, mostly American, encroachment and influence. From the western side, the EU support for Ukraine was less ideological and more financially motivated.
Russia and Ukraine have paid a high price in the larger proxy war. Russia has won the physical fight. Hopefully soon the financial terms will be accepted by the western stakeholders and combat operations can cease.

But the shop owner didn’t want his window broken… it costs him time having to close the shop while repairing, and capital that could have been spent on other equipment, expansion or staff. The politicians who skim from Ukraine are just as short sighted. A $1 million missile that blows up a Ukrainian building is money that could have been spent on a US road or bridge. Not a bad argument/analogy…but it doesn’t fit in all aspects. True, there can be an opportunity cost for investment decisions.
The analogy breaks down in some respects when using private enterprise investment decisions versus gov’t investment decisions. The decisions at the margin are generally based on different value functions: rate of return on dollar invested versus some social value metric that is often not market based.
The argument also neglects to note the cost of external diseconomies (sometimes given short shrift in private investment decisions) or the potential gains from replacing amortized, inefficient factors of production/technology with productivity enhancing technology.
For gov’t, additionally, the decision isn’t necessarily the missile or a bridge, there is the option of neither: potentially funding a drawdown of debt and/or lower private/business taxes.
The politicians skimming money are simply dirtbags violating public trust for private benefit. Worse, the personality type given to this lends itself to huge conflicts of interest and, potentially, criminal behavior.

Life in this planet is truly unforgiving, not a good idea for a weak nation to volunteer as attack dogs in a proxy war between two superpowers. Elites in the West perhaps thought like the Romans “ Cartago delenda est”, but the adventure didn’t end well and now the Western oligarchs want to socialize the losses making EU citizens pay for their private misadventures. The plan to use the Russian frozen funds in Brussels has failed so now they want to stick it to the average EU citizen.
I rather suspect, however, that Russia will simply decide to escalate its military operations just a little bit to drive the entire matter forward to: surrender.
Russia’s motivations for shifting this matter to “military” really are fundamental to its national security interests. The EU-backed Ukranian force that was massed upon its borders was there to defeat them, if it could. Which it couldn’t. But, from the Russian perspective, this was (and remains) an existential threat which had to be answered. I don’t think that they are seriously going to accept any resolution which is merely concerned with “money.”
Because – five-or-ten years later, just as before, “it starts up again.” The bankers have all been paid (off …), but the fantasy of “defeating Russia” remains. This mistake was made before, twice. (Minsk 1, Minsk 2.) Soon enough, the European effort to split-up Russia and devour her vast natural resources will continue.
Russia did not fight for three years to let any such thing happen now.
I literally hate everything about the Ukraine war, including Zelensky and the rest of the corrupt there, almost as much as I hate the EU, using innocent citizens of Ukraine and kill them for years. If there is a judgement of all these people involved, including US senators and house reps. I truly hope to God all these greedy evil people get the righteous judgement of heaven soon, right after they all get their payout. To me Ukraine every inch of it is cursed, and I hope PDJT asks nothing from that but repayment; Trump shouldn’t even take, rare earth as it’s cursed.
