Let’s put the events of the last 72 hours into context.
On Monday and Tuesday, Russian oil refineries in NATO countries Hungary and Romania suddenly, and simultaneously, have mysterious explosions and catastrophic fires {citation}}. On Wednesday, NATO head Mark Rutte comes to visit President Trump in the White House, and at the end of the day, the same Russian company, Lukoil, whose refinery exploded in Romania, suddenly becomes sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury {citation}. These events are not disconnected.
President Trump then disputes a Wall Street Journal report {citation}, further saying he did not give approval, nor does he know where NATO long-range missiles are coming from that were launched from Ukraine into Russia {citation}.
Alarmingly, both the Wall Street Journal and President Trump are seemingly correct.
President Trump did not give authorization; however, he did cede authority to NATO to make independent decisions about long-range missiles. The U.K. provided the British storm shadow missiles, and Ukraine launched them with NATO support for targeting deep into Russia.
President Trump saying, “wherever they may come from,” is alarming in itself. We all know that British PM Starmer, French President Macron, German Chancellor Merz and NATO Secretary Mark Rutte are all in alignment to push NATO into a direct conflict with Russia using the non-NATO state of Ukraine to do it.
The frustrating part is not the obtuse deflection by President Trump – perhaps he really doesn’t know – but rather the alarming issue of questioning whether President Trump is getting accurate information from the U.S. intelligence apparatus to make sound decisions. President Trump has abdicated the conflict decision-making to the NATO “coalition of the willing”, while the USA remains in NATO as a sideline observer.
The European members of NATO want war with Russia. President Trump does not want war with Russia, yet remains tied to NATO as they push toward war with Russia. This is not going to end well.
The U.S. Treasury sanctions against Russian energy companies is not going to cause Russian President Vladimir Putin to change his mind on his strategic objective of taking the Donbas region in Ukraine as a buffer zone against NATO encroachment.
WASHINGTON — Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is imposing further sanctions as a result of Russia’s lack of serious commitment to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine. Today’s actions increase pressure on Russia’s energy sector and degrade the Kremlin’s ability to raise revenue for its war machine and support its weakened economy. The United States will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the war, and a permanent peace depends entirely on Russia’s willingness to negotiate in good faith. Treasury will continue to use its authorities in support of a peace process.
“Now is the time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “Given President Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin’s war machine. Treasury is prepared to take further action if necessary to support President Trump’s effort to end yet another war. We encourage our allies to join us in and adhere to these sanctions.”
Today’s action targets Russia’s two largest oil companies, Open Joint Stock Company Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft) and Lukoil OAO (Lukoil), which are now designated. Rosneft is a vertically integrated energy company specializing in the exploration, extraction, production, refining, transport, and sale of petroleum, natural gas, and petroleum products. Lukoil engages in the exploration, production, refining, marketing, and distribution of oil and gas in Russia and internationally.
Rosneft and Lukoil are being designated pursuant to E.O. 14024 for operating or having operated in the energy sector of the Russian Federation economy.
Additionally, OFAC is designating a number of Russia-based Rosneft and Lukoil subsidiaries, a list of which is available in Annex 1 below. All entities owned 50 percent or more, directly or indirectly, by Rosneft and Lukoil are blocked pursuant to E.O. 14024, even if not designated by OFAC. (read more)
It was Lukoil’s operation in Romania that exploded on Monday, and it was Rosneft oil that was being processed at the refinery in Hungary where the explosion took place on Monday night into Tuesday. Then, suddenly on Wednesday, President Trump, NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent trigger sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil.
President Vladimir Putin is not a pretending man.
The Russian Federation President can clearly see what NATO (sans Trump) is trying to do, even if the advisors around President Trump are not being fulsome with their information about what NATO is trying to do.

In any case Zelensky has refused making the current line of contact the new border…or to recognize Crimea as Russian, or to pledge Ukraine neutrality. So regardless of what Putin and Trump may agree to Trump has a Zelensky problem…and Trump has a problem with republicans in congress who want to continue supporting Ukraine and of course all the democrats will vote with them if it means opposing Trump and aligning with the EU. I hate to say it but Trump is boxed in.
Zelenskyy is a puppet and makes no decisions on his own. The problem is the politicians, theirs and ours, who are negotiating our future away.
I believe Zelensky has been the main problem from the day he was installed. Obviously the Ukrainian people haven’t had enough death and war to rise up, dump Z, and get someone who is willing to negotiate a solution.
Let’s see what Decembers temps are like in UCrainium. The UKR’s may just provide relief to the Zelensky problem.
Ukrainians have had enough but not enough to return to Russian control. It was brutal for them. They will fight to the end and after. Zelensky is not in trouble with the people. The solution against Russia is either militarily or financially and Russia is hurting now. To Ukraine, giving anything to Russia only means Russia will take more. It would be different if Trump had the full support of the republican party rather than Ukraine having it. Trump could unilaterally act as blocking mechanism to stop support flowing to Ukraine and it’s NATO supporters but the heat he would take from doing so would be enormous…he would essentially be taking on congress, the deep state, the EU, and NATO. He’s not going to do that. I believe there are no reliable numbers for either country to admit to but since Russia has a habit of tossing men into battle with guns behind them and Ukraine is in a battle for its survival it is probably more than any figure.
Ukraine itself lists 1.7 soldiers million killed. The most current reliable assessments are closer to 2 million.
When large militaries begin to collapse in high intensity combat, the casualties increase exponentially.

It’s a war of attrition like WW1. Territory is irrelevant when the army protecting it is has been ground to dust. In the last body exchange, Ukraine returned 24 Russian bodies and Russia returned over 1000 Ukrainian bodies.

Declare any retaliation vs the EU related to their actions in the Ukraine is on the EU’s head … NOT NATO’s.
The reaction to the declaration above by the US Congress, DoD and INTEL would publicly expose the pressure being exerted by the Puppet Masters to draw the US into war.

I read something the other day, reporting that unemployment in Europe is rising. People are graduating school with crippling debt and no job market, because the oligarchs have either hired a bunch of immigrants or moved operations out of country altogether.
So if you think the EU’s economies are trash now, oh brother. Things will continue to deteriorate until either (A) the oligarchs are dispatched French Revolution style, or (B) those governments are radically reformed and the oligarchs’ unethical greed is reined-in and stopped.
I have very little faith in the majority of mankind, so I expect the EU will simply deteriorate until it becomes the next big communist bloc. They will absolutely drag the US down with them unless we cut those ties. The oligarchs will likely try to lead their new bloc like the Soviet oligarchs of old. If that doesn’t work, they’ll either be butchered or try to flee to another country to repeat the pattern, like George Soros.

As I’ve said in an earlier comment upthread, we can suspect that threats by the RINOS and the Neocons in Congress to drop their support for Trump’s MAGA agenda is the driving force which keeps PDJT from quickly ending US support for Ukraine.
If this is the case, then the logical strategy for Russia to now pursue is to build up enough forces to allow for a quick transition from an attrition style of warfare into a blitzkrieg style of maneuver warfare, breaking out from the current lines of contact and taking all of Ukraine’s Black Sea coast plus all of Ukraine east of the Dnieper River, plus Kiev.
The other logical change to Russia’s strategy would be to inflict as many casualties as possible as quickly as possible on Ukraine’s military as a demonstration of how useless it would be for NATO to continue the war. This would have to be done at the expense of a sudden sharp rise in Russia’s own casualty rates.
If the Russians were successful in their new war strategy, it would then put PDJT and his own military advisors into the difficult position of either fruitlessly continuing a war which clearly cannot be won by NATO and its Ukraine proxy, or else acceding to all of Russia’s current terms for peace.
The latter pathway towards a conclusion to the war — i.e., Russia gets everything it demands — is now the probable outcome of this conflict. It’s just a matter of how much time it will take for Russia to win, and how many more thousands of Russians and Ukrainians will be killed and wounded before it all ends.
The war is moving quite quickly on the front now, which is why NATO is panicking. Putin wants avoid the losses inherent in maneuver warfare, particularly since drones have changed the face of ground warfare completely. Ukraine is producing 200,000 drones a month. Given their accuracy, that makes up for their 5:1 deficiency in artillery. Russia is producing just as many drones, probably more.
Ukrainian lines are breaking down and losses are mounting. Simplicius’s reporting on the ground situation seems to be accurate.

Regardless of what Trump says, all the talk of peace between Ukraine and Russia is nonsense and Russia knows it because NATO EU version is bristling with war talk. Rubio is still a huge Neocon. Always has been, always will be. Rubio is not pursuing a MAGA–America first, no pointless wars–foreign policy, and the Trump Administration with Rubio as both Secretary of State and National Security Advisor is not conducting a MAGA foreign policy.
Everytime there is a serious chance of this war being negotiated out, there are attacks/sabotage carried out to derail the peace talks. The EU leadership is full steam ahead to all out war with Russia, they see it as cover for their oncoming economic collapse. And they are making damn sure that it is NATO that is the face of the aggression. The US will be forced by treaty to once again face a world war started in Europe. The only thing I see that would possibly stop the EU’s momentum toward general war is a move by President Trump to withdraw the US from NATO or at least the threat therof.
I agree that the EU leadership and most of the European NATO leaders are full steam ahead on this, and that it is all about their lousy economic situation.
But Article V of the NATO treaty does not actually force the U.S. into any war that they start, even if it is Putin who makes the first aggressive move. If there is an attack on a NATO country (not an attack by a NATO country on a non-NATO country), each NATO member is obligated only to take “such action as [the member state] deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.” There is enough wiggle room in that clause that if Trump disagrees with what the other NATO leaders have caused to happen, then he can refuse to commit our military to take part in it.
The question is, if they force the start of a war involving NATO, will Trump refuse to commit our military? The IC and deep state and most of the Senate will go totally nuts if he refuses. He should float the possibility that if he doesn’t agree with what they are doing that he might just refuse. He cannot let them force the U.S. into saving them in another major war that is absolutely not in our best interests. It is China that we should be focused on right now, not Europe’s self-inflicted economic woes.
