Two significant shifts for Canadians appear to come out of the recent tour of Europe as highlighted today by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The first development is the formal declaration that Canada has joined the “coalition of the willing”, along with the U.K, France and Germany. The second announcement is that Canadian troops will join the coalition of the willing and put boots on the ground in Ukraine, as part of the coalition’s security guarantees for Ukraine. Additionally, at the 33:00-minute point, Mark Carney discusses the Canadian effort to prepare for the USMCA renegotiations.

Carney knows Canadian military is not equipped or ready for war. This guy is sly. Canada is not deploying combat troops to fight in Ukraine but saying “actively considering” the “possibility” – that possibility will contribute to a ‘future security guarantee’ (contingent on a peace plan). What that is, is that this foundation for ‘any guarantee’ includes a ‘robust’ Ukrai nian military (albeit) supported by no more EU alone, but an “international coalition” efforts including intelligence (mentioned) and other (not specific) what “other forms of support” entails. Which countries is Canada banking on fighting Russia when India, China and N Korea is not going to be this ‘international coalition’ when the recent highly publicised newfound friendship just took place in Russia – at the same time, a anti-Trump tariff joining of hands.
Current Canadian Military Readiness: Canada’s military is described as ill-equipped and thinly stretched, with only one submarine seaworthy and major equipment modernization programs delayed. Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are not ready to fight a modern war independently, and even a consequential contribution to coalition warfighting is currently not feasible – their lack of modern anti-tank weapons like the Javelin, which were crucial in Ukraine, and the absence of shoulder-launched Stinger missiles, which were used to counter Russian air power.
America is clear no boots on the ground so Carney, while not currently prepared for a direct combat role is discussing about potential security guarantees involving a coalition of nations (does he think America will be in on this future consideration hope that?) Canada would be depending on getting lots of money from Western nations to equip its own military over many years (future security guarantees, again). Putin, Tsi, Modi and K JongUn must be laughing their heads off.

Trump needs to announce that any troops from a Nato country that position themselves in Ukraine are doing so on their own behalf, and not Nato’s, and that any attack on those troops by Russia that occurs as part of the Ukraine war will not be considered an attack on a Nato ally, or trigger a requirement of mutual defense. This is the only reason they want to put troops there, to start a war between Nato and Russia, and we have to deny them that ability.

President Trump needs to make clear to Carney and Merz and all the rest that he will not permit U.S. troops to be put on the ground in Ukraine under any circumstances. Plus he should be clear that so long as the U.S. is still a member of NATO that should any other NATO member put their own troops into Ukraine or even commit themselves to put their troops into Ukraine under any conditions, that they will do it all on their own and not under NATO. He should not permit them to maneuver the U.S. into any situation where NATO Article V could be triggered on us and that the U.S. will not be obligated to intervene if they get themselves into a war with Russia.
If he is clear about all this, Carney and the others will just have to come up with some other plan to keep that war going, and of course with lots of U.S. funding, which is what they are really interested in.
