The reality of the U.S-Canada economic relationship and the position of President Donald Trump is not that difficult to understand if you take all the disparate datapoints and quotes from Trump and put them into context.
During a White House meeting with Mark Carney, President Trump essentially told the Canadian Prime Minister why he was in no hurry to get to a deal with Canada.
The 35% tariffs on non-USMCA goods are going to trigger on August 1st, because the main priority of Trump -looking toward Canada- is to dissolve the USMCA.
During the May 6th oval office meeting with Carney, President Trump was discussing the USMCA and said: “As you know it terminates fairly shortly. It gets renegotiated fairly shortly.” … “This was a transitional deal, and we’ll see what happens, we’re going to start renegotiating that” … “I don’t know if it serves a purpose anymore.” …. “And the biggest purpose it served was, we got rid of NAFTA.”
To understand why President Trump wants to dissolve the USMCA {SEE HERE}. To understand the technical value of dissolving the USMCA {SEE HERE}. It’s not a complicated economic analysis; it’s common sense.
Currently, approximately 60% of the traded goods and services between the U.S. and Canada are covered by the USMCA; the remaining 40% will be hit by tariffs on August 1st at a 35% rate.
When the USMCA is renegotiated, predictably dissolved in favor of two bilateral trade agreements – one for Mexico and one for Canada, all of the U.S-Canada trade sectors will be part of the enlarged free trade negotiation. As a result, there is absolutely no motive to engage in trade discussions now.
♦ President Trump’s position is essentially to talk about the details when the USMCA is dissolved; hence, the ambivalence.
Politico is noting the Canadian trade team simply doesn’t understand this. “[D]espite months of back and forth, the terms for a deal have not yet been set, a senior government source said, with the White House informing the Canadian side that Trump is more focused on securing deals with other partners like India.”

Carney’s government wants stability around the tariffs Trump invoked using Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
They are crushing Canada’s auto, steel, aluminum and forestry industries. Trump also plans to hit imported copper with 50 percent tariffs starting Aug. 1 — with semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports likely to follow.
Canada ultimately wants the tariffs eliminated or lowered to a fixed level that doesn’t fluctuate, the senior government official said. “If we know what world we’re going into, then we can have better plans and policies to attract investment.”
Canada’s premiers say the unpredictability is punishing the economy.
“Private investment is not growing because everybody’s on pause,” Quebec Premier François Legault told reporters last week. “They are waiting to see what will happen. I’ve been in business — it’s about the worst thing you can have is uncertainty.” (read more)
The certainty the Canadians are looking for can be found easily if they stop pretending.
(1) U.S. tariffs against non-USMCA products from Canada will go into effect on August 1st. (2) As soon as the USMCA is reopened, it will be dissolved. (3) After the USMCA dissolution, a bilateral free trade agreement between the USA and Canada will be negotiated.
Every current effort by Canada to change the nature of the trade system, between now and the reopening of the USMCA (to dissolve it), is futile.
Again, I’m not exactly sure why this reality is so challenging for the Canadian govt to understand.

I was “working” in Canada in 96 & the news was talking about how unfair it was for wealthy Canadians to go across the boarder to pay for healthcare. The wait time for surgery to repair a broken hip was 1 year. I took that to heart because my 93yo grandmother in Texas had recently broken her hip & couldn’t imagine her having to be in pain for 1 year.
I once had an idiot say to me, “I guess that convenience is no longer free.” She wanted to purchase a stamp in a convenience store but did not want to pay the higher price. She wanted Post Office prices but without the line.
She mixed her metaphors up. Convenience costs more because someone wants it now and done easily. That is why convenience stores are more expensive than a big box warehouse store. It has easy in and easy out.
So, sadly, the Canadians who get “free” also get “slow and cumbersome”.
Those who want convenience get to pay much much more.
But most Canadians still promote their Free Healthcare lies to keep the general population satiated. Young people fall for it because they are not sickly and disease filled yet. By the time that they get to old and sick then it is too late to fight to change the system.

And, I just found out today my primary care doctor of several years will no longer accept Medicare, nor will I be able to file a claim. It’s now $200 for a 30 minute office visit, right out of pocket.
I told the scheduling person I am forced to find another doctor ..I am too old, paid into the system too many years to just accept this new policy. So very disappointed in the doctor who apparently has out $$$ over his patients. I came home quite depressed that our medical system (and doctors) has come to this.
Surprised this doctor won’t work out a cash deal with long time patients?
I worked for a doctor who told us that after filing claims, Medicaid cost her more than seeing patients for freE.
When my husband lost insurance, his doctor agreed to see him for something like $40 per visit and routine tests
I’m on my 5th GP in 7 years. Similar story. The one I’d been with the longest dropped the company I had my Medicare Advantage plan with. Found a new one I liked who left the practice she was in — with the huge hospital system that covers a good part of the state outside of Boston — to go with a different and smaller medical group. Found another one, same thing a year later. The one I have now I’ve had for 2 years… fingers crossed.
Lots of bright students have long since decided that medicine is a field fraught with high costs of an education and nothing but “business hassles” once one begins practicing.
Research the Bioethics departments in medical schools and it will make one very concerned with just what medical students are now being taught.
“Moral Bioenhancement” is a popular topic among the self-appointed elites in our medical and sociology circles. On X this morning I stumbled across a post from Libs of Tik Tok featuring a paper from two yahoos in the University of Michigan medical school’s bioethics department. . In this paper they are proposing that since the consumption of red meat is not a positive for society due to its effect on the climate, the widespread dissemination of the type of ticks which render the victim allergic to red meat would be justified. Of course the elites wouldn’t advertise this was being done since the peasants might object. So this “Moral BioEnhancement would be accomplished “covertly”.
So what are University of Michigan medical students being taught? And did this type of “ethics” play into a global program of injecting people with an experimental vaccine? Or a purposeful release of a virus developed in a gain of function program? Wasn’t Fauci’s wife employed as a bioethicist by the U.S. government?
Medicine has destroyed the respect and trust they once were given. Why would we expect current doctors to be any better than they now are? Employees of vast hospital corporations run by people disconnected from the practice of medicine and controlled by Big Pharma?
Try telling that to a farmer. Some young pup pushing that would never see that patient again!
It is all part of the WEF philosophy of managing us like we are a herd of beef cattle.

My doctor told me I had to see him a minimum of twice a year to stay on his rolls; it’s the recommendation of MediCare for the ‘elderly’; to insure good care!!

I believe in taking responsibility for our own health. A large reason for the diseases we suffer is because of poor lifestyle choices. That’s on us as individuals. We can save a lot of money on health care simply by being proactive. I haven’t seen a doctor for years. I haven’t had a prescription since I can’t remember when and almost never use over the counter meds. Even when I broke my upper arm about 5 years ago I didn’t use prescription pain killers. I cycled back and forth between ibuprofen and Tylenol and it was enough to take the edge off for the first few days after surgery. The only doctor’s care I’ve had for the last ten years was because of that broken arm. It involved one trip to the emergency room and a few days later an operation putting pins in my arm. I was out of the hospital the following day after the operation. The surgeon said he wanted to see me again 6 weeks later but I didn’t bother because my arm had healed fine. No rehab. I just did the exercises suggested in the information pack I had been given. I was told that I wouldn’t be able to raise my arm past a certain level but I have the same movement of that arm that I have with my unbroken arm.
I realize that many people have serious conditions that require a lot more health care than what I need but how much health care dollars are wasted on health issues that could have easily been prevented. There should be more emphasis on preventative health care and personal responsibility.

I do Medical coding. The provider is probably doing this because Medicare is contracted so they do not pay as much for services provided as private insurance pays. Sadly the provider may be tring to eliminate his Medicare patients.
I had a long convo with my sister’s internist starting around 2017. He was/is a great doctor who always was patient and kind with my sister, who had a lot of medical issues, but one day when I accompanied her , we noticed he was carrying a small laptop and that for the first time ever, he was hurrying throught the appt. Next appt, same thing.
We asked and he answered: his internist uncle owned the practice and had explained they were losing money on all Medicare patients because 1) Medicare had adjusted payments downward and 2) on average, such patients took more time with the doctor, meaing fewer patients could be scheduled per day.
He was frazzled, frustrated, and apologetic.
Like a hefty portion of good citizens, my sister always paid her own way in life and in spite of not having much of a retirement income, was paying top dollar to a supplemental insurance. In spite of that, because she was also a Medicare patient she was actually costing her internists money.
Of course, we thought of all the fraudulent Medicaid patients and all those who never bothered to pay for supplemental insurance not because they couldn’t but because they wouldn’t.
Also, I am tired of excuses made for Americans who indeed have worked all their lives, but SPENT THEIR INCOMES ON LUXURIES so that when they retired, they were counted as “needing aid,”
What about all the Americans like my sister or my mother ,for that matter, who didn’t spend on luxuries, who saved all their lives, saved for the very expenses they knew they would have when they retired and lost medical, dental benefits and such?
I know people who have traveled to almost every continent during their lives, but when they retire claim they “can’t afford insurance.” Of course they can’t, and they expect me and you to pay for everything they did with their paychecks.
Sounds like we’re headed down the same path as Canada. Medicare isn’t free but our elderly and disabled who need it most won’t find a provider.
In the mid 2000’s my dad’s neurologist was closing out his practice & sleep clinic due to rising costs & declining revenues due to the coming transition to nOcare/Medicare.
Had some rather in depth talks with him from time to time when he had no follow up appointments after my dad’s.
Same/similar thing had already hit the car repairing business with all the “extended” car warranties which essentially meant that IF our dealership sold the policy that meant that I the mechanic had to do a non-warranty claim for the labor price of paying ME only the warranty rate which is discounted by 50% or more from “customer pay” rates.
Let me equate that to a simple bone breakage payment rate (i’m sure nOcare set one rate for it) if someone under 30 breaks a arm, it is a rather easy set & cast once back into place & a younger individual’s self repair system takes over easily.
Same cannot be said for breaking the same bone in someone over 50 lots of things can & will go wrong but it probably pays the same & even less perhaps for medicare coverage.
I refused to do many a job for what the insurance company was willing to pay for it, certainly the company was not backing off their “cut” to give me the standard rate. Most customers took elsewhere, a couple jobs the manager had someone else in the shop do.
I’m not real sure doctors can refuse & send you down the road for a “repair” hence the stoppage of taking certain insurers. I’m sure medicare does pay if you don’t mind “bending” a few rules to extract additional payment for services, it is a common occurrence under warranty repairs on cars for sure.
This was the main reason I got out of the auto repair biz & went to forklifts instead.
My daughter told me is was my fault that I don’t go to the doctor when something’s wrong. I said I was raised only to go when something is sticking out or your fever is over 104 and an ice bath isn’t working. My parents had great health insurance back then. I didn’t have any when I raised my kids and we played by that same principle I was raised on and my son was 7yrs old when we paid off his birth. Shr gets everything free so to her running to the doctor fixes any ailments. I’ve put off the standard colonoscopy for years, sent off my sample and the doctor screeched I had cancer so I acquiesced and had the stupid colonoscopy done. Clean as a whistle haven’t got the bill yet, should send it to my primary doctor to pay. Total waste of my time so yeah why should I go to the doctor when I know my body better than they do! All they want is to push drugs and shoot you with vaccines.

All the Canadians I know are complaining about the health care in Canada. I have seen zero smugness. There are extremely long waits for tests and for seriously needed operations. Many people cannot find a doctor. No one is taking new patients. A visit to the doctor cannot last any longer than 10 minutes and can only be for one issue. If you more than one problem it will need another appointment. I’m assuming this is for billing purposes. When I was younger it was easy to find a doctor and it was easy to get a second opinion if you wanted one. Those were simpler times and health care was simpler too. All the new scientific developments in health care cost a lot of money. My first two pregnancies were handled by my regular doctor. There were no tests other than a few blood tests in the beginning. Once a month doctor visit. There were no ultrasounds. During my second two pregnancies I had to go to a specialist (obstetrician) because my regular doctor said he couldn’t afford the insurance he would need to buy to continue delivering babies. So even though I had two perfectly normal pregnancies and deliveries I was sent to a much more expensive doctor and ended up having a lot more tests done than in my previous pregnancies. All of these things cost a ton of money and drive up the cost of health care.

Perhaps my comment is too negative but that is what better minds than ours are saying, such as economists Prof Jeff Sachs and Prof John Mearsheimer. You may be in the 1/3 of the country that’s living high on the hog but the rest of us are in the 2/3 that struggle daily. Many of us don’t eat healthy because we can’t afford it and don’t go to doctors or dentists for the same reason.
I’m sorry but healthy eating can be very cheap if you do it right. It is one of the best things you can do for your health and it will also lessen the need for doctor and dentist visits too.
I have been visiting family in Canada (dual citizen living in U.S). With a bird’s eye view of both countries, Canada is the country on the verge of economic collapse…. and some Cdns are beginning to finally realize this. (However, blaming the U.S. is a popular pastime.)
In addition, Liberal Governments’ immigration policies have made the country I was born in and love, unrecognizable in many ways! The New World Gov’t/Communism was the long-range plan…. which was tragically hidden from most Cdns (and Americans).

Awful turmoil happens once a country sees the pitfalls and failure of adopting socialism…in fact, it probably won’t happen in the case of Canada but socialism is usually just one step on the way to where the people collectively adopt a fix to it by adopting a solution where the government owns all of the means of production and resources (otherwise know as communism). I don’t see a easy fix to what Canada is dealing with.
