The USMCA is “effective, and it’s still effective, but people have to follow it,” inferring the issues of Canada as a tool to avoid China tariffs, President Trump said.
Then comes the part everyone will overlook as President Trump notes, “as you know it terminates fairly shortly. It gets renegotiated fairly shortly.” Then comes the biggest statement, “this was a transitional deal, and we’ll see what happens, we’re going to start renegotiating that”… “I don’t know if it serves a purpose anymore.” …. “And the biggest purpose it served was, we got rid of NAFTA.” This presents the future of the USMCA and specifically the U.S-Canada aspect to the trade deal exactly as we anticipated.
President Trump is going to exit the trilateral USMCA in favor of two distinctly different bilateral trade agreements between the U.S and Mexico; and the U.S and Canada. The only consideration now is the timing. President Trump is 100% focused on the BIG ECONOMIC PICTURE; it’s not about the politics, it’s all about the economics. Canada is so far short of meeting its 2% of GDP obligation to NATO they would need to increase military spending by about 50% to meet that target.
All of Carney’s policies seem to be driving to implode the Canadian economy.
If Carney destroys Canada’s economy, wiping out 75% of their GDP, they could continue to spend what they do now on defense and that would amount to 2% of that vastly smaller GDP.
That would be one way to do it. But I doubt many Canadians would be happy.

I have two friends who are grunts in the Canadian Military. They are about to retire.
They have nothing good to say about leadership, both the civilian and military arms. They are fed up with the woke nonsense, the overweight out of shape lazy troops, and over their careers, have seen a really bad decline in attitudes. This is all because of wokeism. Recruitment is down, the numbers are dwindling. The trans and DEI troops are disgraceful, as they both have spoken about.
They also say in their younger days, Canada had some very well trained members, who were well known to be good fighters and the elite members, were impressive shots as well. That is known, as a Canadian Sniper held the record for the farthest kill shot. Im not sure if that is still the case or not.
They are severely shorthanded, and they are supremely underfunded. They are both very happy to be getting out shortly. Its become a joke, as one put it.
Without US support, there would be no way, Canada could defend itself. This is not even a debate.

Canadian military, sad. When I was a kid, we thought of Canadians as tough guys, Canadian Royal Mounted Police, Paul Bunyan, legendary stories.
I had a Canadian (Ontario) businessman (and lawyer) in my office a month or so ago. A seemingly smart man with successful companies. and vacay property in Florida.
The subject of Trump saying that “Canada” should be a U.S. state came up. He seemed shocked when I said, oh we don’t want Quebec or Ontario, only Alberta and maybe Saskatchewan.
His reply was that Canadians wouldn’t want to be in the U.S. because they have a better medical system, apparently forgetting that only a short time before he had mentioned that he and his wife didn’t have a primary care physician, because theirs had retired, and so were on a months-long waiting list.
I asked what would Canadians do if the U.S. stopped subsidizing these social services and military defense. He had no response, as if he’d never heard this before.
I don’t understand where this kind of blinders-like thinking comes from.

Your description of Canada is remarkably similar to the US, where a lot of our rural areas are still/luckilly populated with ‘regular people’ that understand the basic economics of life and that there’s no bottomless money-fountain that the left seems to believe in.

CA and NY have many Red conservatives trapped, even though it shows a Blue state on the electoral map. Actually Blue counties win the state due to population, but the rest of the state is solid Red voters. Rigged numbers have skewed results in National and local election for decades. Red votes are diluted through fraud and other means, so the state is not really blue, but the vote counts are decidedly blue in corrupt counties.
Trump is my definition of the consummate diplomat: someone who can tell you to go to hell and say it in such a nice way that you actually look forward to the trip.
