A few thoughts. First, apparently Doug Ford doesn’t quite understand that tariffs on steel, aluminum and auto imports are not part of the “reciprocity” tariff regime. They are an entirely different category classified under national security directives to ensure American industrial capacity.
Second, as Canada moves into the “freedom fries” phase, voices like Doug Ford might want to consider the end of this continuum that finds the word “embargo” in the lingo. Perhaps President Trump would consider elevating the conversation to “reciprocity” in the banking sector. Again, I digress.

My husband has a golfing trip with some friends to Whistler in a couple months. He’s seriously considering canceling the trip, partly because he doesn’t want to spend any money there, and partly because he’s concerned about vandalism (or worse) when his Washington plates are seen. Such a shame to have to even think about things like that.
Drive a rental car and buy the damage waiver.
I have the same conundrum. We have the same trip planned, and I love this trip (having done it a few times in the past). Thankfully we have till May to confirm deposits without penalty. Since we drive, I’m concerned about the USA license plate advertising our citizenry and making us potential targets on the way. Myself and my friends will be having a serious conversation about this over the coming weeks. Perhaps we should just keep the money in the USA and go to Bandon Dunes.

Listened to this Canadian Premier twice now and don’t think he understands what he’s saying. He said he, along with the new Prime Minister, are ready to inflict retaliating tariffs, ‘tariff for tariff’ is what he said – which is exactly what President Trump has been saying the U.S. is going to do, beginning April 2, but calling it reciprocal tariffs.
How is that going to inflict pain? It’s Canada that has the higher tariffs and so if the U.S. matches the existing Canadian tariffs for like or same type goods, what is Canada going to do – match what the US is going to impose which is already identical to what Canada is already imposing?
And then that jibe about the 50% of automobile parts, he says he’s seen diagrams, lists, of where the different parts come from and thinks the US also doesn’t have that same list and that the U.S. Treasury hasn’t already figured out how to apply tariffs for those materials using the existing guidelines of the USMCA agreement?

The minsets of these two leaders could not be more different! President Trump’s actions are grounded in ethical behavior while Ford’s have no ethical basis and are motivated only by vindictiveness.
Part of Trump’s tariffs are for American national security and part are for reciprocity, (fairness). Both are entirely defensible actions of a chief executive determined to fulfill his promise to the American people to represent their interests.
When tempers cool, how will Premier Ford defend his promise to inflict pain on the American people?
He can’t, because his motivations are indefensible.
Trump has never said anything about harming ordinary Canadians, in fact it was quite the opposite. His invitation for Canada to become the 51st state carries with it the promise of lowering Canadian citizens taxes and improving their standard of living.
The corruption and ignorance of past American administrations have allowed Canada to get away with economic murder for years but all that is coming to an end! All the tough talk from Ford, Trudeau and Ursula something or other won’t change the reality.

There has been NO CHANGING of the goal post. The message was very clear, stop illegal invasion and stop illegal drugs and NO tariffs.
Well, I believe it is a matter of two fold tariffs being applied to Canada. One set of tariffs is about the border and drugs, the second set of tariffs is about fair and reciprocal economic trade.
The 1st set will end when the border is secure with no drugs and aliens coming across. The 2nd when fair trade is accomplished.
Ever since 1997 (many herein know what that date represented for Canada and much of the Commonwealth) … we down here in the “Lower 48” have referred to Vancouver as “HONG-COUVER” … and for good reason.
The folks fleeing HK brought their HK$$$$$$$$$$$$$ with them and quite literally took over BC … and now they and their ChiCom fellow-travelers who followed have an extraordinary amount of “influence”, shall we say, over the rest of Canada.
You need to fix your own Country, Mr. Papke … don’t expect Uncle Sam to do it … we’ve done it enough for you and the rest of the Commonwealth over the past 100+ years …
First thing Canada should do is rid yourself of all the nutty climate change policies you have which badly hurts your economy.

More carrot for what? Canada is charging the USA almost 300% tariffs on dairy products (plus other tariffs).
Canada has received enough carrot at our expense over the years. Enough already.
And agricultural products like vegetables including carrots.
PDJT offered Canada RECIPROCAL tariffs and stop letting illegals/fentanyl over the Canadian border. I think that is VERY much a “carrot”. Canada said “NO!” There we had offer and rejection of offer.
PDJT then changed his offer to slap Canada with PUNITIVE tariffs. Canada has counteroffered with “FU, USA. We are going to punish you.”
Canada could have stopped this drama a while ago. Every time they say NO then PDJT has no choice but to make his message strong enough that they understand. Canada is forcing the goalposts.
The BEATING will continue until your Politicians get on their knees and beg PDJT for forgiveness. The USA does not need one thing from your Country.
President Trump has never made this about the Canadian people. Americans aren’t booing the Canadian national anthem because of the tariffs the Canadian government has placed on American goods for years. Suddenly tariffs are a bad thing?
Your premier wants to inflict pain on the American people because the USA is doing what Canada has done for decades.
How exactly? Canceling a Starlink Satellite Internet Service contract that would benefit Canadians. Turning off electricity to US cities while ignoring that the fuel to power your electric plants comes in part from the U.S. Make it harder for American tourists to enter the country?
Good luck with that. I cannot think of a single Canadian product or travel experience I need or desire that can’t be found here in the U.S. Not one.
They don’t even have rare earths or anything.
Actually, they have substantial mineral riches.

Canada is NOT a sovereign country. That’s the whole point. If they were, then they could choose their own path. They aren’t so they can’t.
President Trump is giving Canada a heads that its time for Canada to put on its big boy pants and choose.
