A few thoughts. First, apparently Doug Ford doesn’t quite understand that tariffs on steel, aluminum and auto imports are not part of the “reciprocity” tariff regime. They are an entirely different category classified under national security directives to ensure American industrial capacity.
Second, as Canada moves into the “freedom fries” phase, voices like Doug Ford might want to consider the end of this continuum that finds the word “embargo” in the lingo. Perhaps President Trump would consider elevating the conversation to “reciprocity” in the banking sector. Again, I digress.

In the simplest of terms, this is essentially like having the nicest house on the street. Your house is the one everyone in the neighborhood comes to gather.

When I ran for provincial elections rumor had it that Doug Ford was worried about losing two ridings to a true Conservative Party.
One of those ridings was mine. I had yard signs everywhere. I lost, but I saw what lengths he will go to keep power. He is ruthless. He cares only about power and control. Polling guides his policy. He is immensely insecure and a most loathsome individual.

Well, I have had a great deal of contact with Canadians as friends, relatives and business associates. Always good relationships, but also an understood belief that Canadians really do not think well of the US and most of us as well. Kinda a ‘better than thou’ line of thinking. A few weeks ago Victor Davis Hanson summarized the Tariff / Trade issues with Canada. It’s a quick 7 1/2 minute summary.
His entire introduction comes straight out of the MSM’s playbook.
My expectation is this:
* More cars sold in the US of which N percentage of car will be manufactured inside the US
* More US jobs in cars (parts/assembly/manufacturing)
* US consumers will pay more for their cars and car parts (salaries in the US are higher, and car manufacturers and dealerships are likely to NOT eat it in their margins)
* More demand for US car parts in US on short term – with supply chains going abroad – will initially drive the price of parts up.. as the manufacturing base in US is constricted
* Costs for expanding manufacturing investments will be offloaded to consumer
* US consumer will have less reliable / worse quality cars.
* Less car jobs in Canada and Mexico
* Huge writeoff for investments outside US made by Ford, GMC and other car manufacturers.. Costs that are going to have to be offloaded to the US consumer and Ford shareholders etc.
So basically it reads like US jobs protectionism, with the costs of it being put on the US consumer
Thus US consumer will have to borrow more for their cars
Leaving outside consideration the tariffs.. just initial effect on US cars market
Pretty much everything the government touches will get skewed to an unnatural state, so..
Not very capitalistic system (as in “may the best cars, car parts win”).
The “emergency for .. critical manufacturing” seems more similar to a communist command & control economy.
I expect that the end price to the consumer will be negligibly different once it shakes out.
The difference is that price arbitrage formally going to importers will now be going to wage earners manufacturing the parts within the US.
Increased quality parts for the same relative prices will be a welcome benefit for everyone else.
I like my old Ford truck and plan to keep it for the duration. Whatever the parts to repair it cost, I’ll gladly pay them. I wouldn’t HAVE one of the new computer controlled things if you gave it to me.
