Before getting to the headline, I want to remind you what CTH outlined two years ago about these massive food price increases.
You might remember me saying that processed food prices will increase at a much greater rate than fresh or lesser processed foods. Factually, even organic products (ie. produce) could/would end up less expensive (in relative terms) to the increase in price at your supermarket, as compared to the price increases for the more processed foods.
The reason is simple, processed food use more energy; energy prices are skyrocketing; the processing costs (packaging, transportation, freezing, sanitizing, storage, warehousing and distribution etc.), at each step of the processing cycle, in addition to higher labor costs, drive up the end result of the price.
In this energy driven inflationary environment, less processing and handling equals lower overall cost increases from field to fork. More processing, handling, distribution equals higher overall costs. This is simply a supply chain, truism.
Into this issue comes McDonald’s Corp. Last I heard, approximately 85% of McDonald’s business was franchise. The franchise has to purchase the product (food) from the main company. Supply side cost increases in the food are transferred from the company to the franchisee via higher product costs. The restaurant is then forced to raise prices to accommodate their increased costs. A portion of the revenue from sales then flows back to the main company.
It is important to note here, there is a natural disconnect in supply side price increases within the franchise model. The parent company must, must, negotiate the best possible contract terms with the suppliers because the increases in costs are passed directly to the franchise. The parent company doesn’t immediately feel any problem until the revenue from the franchise drops due to the forced raising of retail prices and diminished sales. There is a lag.
McDonald’s is extremely exposed to processed food price increases.
McDonald’s franchises were forced by supply cost increases to raise retail prices. The retail prices were raised into a primary customer base that is already under extreme inflationary pressure. The average McDonald’s customer is exposed to inflation at almost every level of their life.
A typical family of four will now pay between $30 to $40 dollars for a single meal at a McDonald’s restaurant. That is not practical for the customer base. The result is lowered sales at retail, as eating a meal at home becomes the less costly option. The downstream consequence is lower revenue returned to the parent company.
The only way the parent company can offset the supply side costs to the franchisee is to lower overall operating costs. Expenses have to be cut. Advertising budgets reduced. Administration costs reduced. Administrative staffing levels reduced. Supply contracts renegotiated. Packing, warehousing, distribution and all vendor contracts renegotiated, consistently looking for better terms.
(Wall Street Journal) McDonald’s Corp. is temporarily closing its U.S. offices this week as it prepares to inform corporate employees about layoffs undertaken by the burger giant as part of a broader company restructuring.
The Chicago-based fast-food chain said in an internal email last week to U.S. employees and some international staff that they should work from home from Monday through Wednesday so it can deliver staffing decisions virtually. The company, in the message, asked employees to cancel all in-person meetings with vendors and other outside parties at its headquarters.
“During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to roles and staffing levels across the organization,” the company said in the message viewed by The Wall Street Journal. McDonald’s declined to comment Sunday on the number of employees being laid off.
McDonald’s in January said that it planned to make “difficult” decisions about changes to its corporate staffing levels by April, as part of a broader strategic plan for the burger chain.
Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski said in an interview at the time that he expected to save money as part of the workforce assessment, but said then he didn’t have a set dollar amount or number of jobs he was looking to cut. “Some jobs that are existing today are either going to get moved or those jobs may go away,” Mr. Kempczinski said.
McDonald’s employs more than 150,000 people globally in corporate roles and its owned restaurants, with 70% of them located outside of the U.S., the chain said in February.
McDonald’s in the message acknowledged that the week of April 3 would be a busy one for personal travel, which it said contributed to the decision to deliver the news remotely. Workers who wouldn’t have access to a computer during the week should provide personal contact information to their manager, the company said. (read more)
And an aging population will not be consuming foods or products aimed at young people.
Go woke, go broke.
McDonald’s has been supporting all the leftist crap for years. They made their Big Mac, now they get to eat it.
And…..that Big Mac is lacking big time….worms again?
Ray Kroc would have seen it for the crock it is
Another misleading cliche. Jokes on the clueless mob as always. CNN would be out of business by now if that was the case. None of them are going broke. The ones who resist are the ones who will be forced out of business. This is the fundamental change they signed up for. Jacks Magic Coffee Shop is the new normal business model.
Exactly. Public-private (fascist) partnerships not unlike DOD/Pfizer on C19 bioweapon. On the surface it looks like a company. Yet beneath the surface it’s something way more.
um, In Soylent Green, old folks were the product, not the consumer.
Be afraid, sounds like we’re almost there between Tech Giants, Deep Green and Great Reset…
Plus they know how to cook.
While I won’t miss McDonald’s one bit it’s nevertheless distressing to see yet more evidence of our republics ultimate demise.
Ultimate and IMPENDING.
Only hope for US is repentance. So corrupt.
If it weren’t for all the woke racist advertising they employ these days I might care what happens to them .
Since they went woke I could care less.
I have my own problems .
Mainly due to the politics woke corporations like the clowns at MacDonalds
support politically.
Me too!
It is unfortunate for those employees that will hurt without a paycheque.
But still, this woke sh&t is going to hurt Bigly going forward.
A Big Mac Meal here in Canada is something like $15.00 (Can)
In the same block one can have a nice Indian/ Thai or Lebanese lunch for the same money or less.
None of them are paying for wokesh$t.
Cheers!
$15 is insane for MacHeartAttack!
Yep, crap fries, and a sugary pop too.
On my walk yesterday I ran into a young guy we know that was sitting in the McDonalds parking lot eating a “ BigMac” it was tiny.
He only bought it because he had a two fer coupon.
He said all Mcds stuff has shrunk significantly.
The good news is North Americans may shed some excess fat.
Cheers!
I had the munchies, everything was closed, being a Sunday night. Haven’t ate that crap for years.
Got a McChicken and Quarter PD w/c. Just for convenience.
17.00. Just the sandwiches.
I was unimpressed. In every way. I wont be going back. Ever…..
We have a Citgo down the road that makes an awesome cheeseburger with everything and fries for $6.99. F McDonalds.
I would imagine in the cold of Canada a spicy Thai soup would be amazing.
Drove by a McDonalds in the Texarkana on Tuesday and they had an American flag flying upside down at half staff. Then on Wednesday drove by again and the American flag was gone. Looked as if someone had cut the cord because flag was gone and the rope was flying in the wind. I tried calling the McDonald’s but no answer. I’m assuming it had something to do with the Christian school shooting in Tennessee. But don’t know why their reason was for flying the flag upside down.
Any organization
worth caring about should address an issue of possible disrespect of Old Glory immediately.
In the olden days when our great country still existed any employees in the public relations department would know to do so without being told.
These days those same employees are instructed not to get involved so not to offend the handful of woke agitators .
If that is what they want So be it .
let them charge that loud rude handful of their most favored customers $10,000.00 per hamburger and we’ll see how that works for the .
Flying the flag upside down shows our country is in a state of dire distress which it is.
Mine has been upside down and half mast since the FRAUD was elected.
It’s getting pretty ragged and torn, but I am so looking forward to the day
I can buy a new one (not made in china) and rehang the new flag with the
respect it deserves. MAGA
…usually meant as a sign of distress/emergency.
flying the US flag upside down
is a sign that our country is in distress
Mine at home is upside down
no one has cut it down (yet)
In 2016 I couldn’t keep my Trump
signs in the yard – they were always
stolen – I gave up.
you left out the ‘gleefully’ descriptor about Demo facilitation of our demise.
Family of 4 in California is more like $60.
A family of 4 in Yucatan can eat a fresh torta of one’s choice and a healthy juice drink for 300$ pesos including tip . About 17 dollars in today’s currency exchange. Gracias
You do realize that 100% juice has the same calorie count and sugar as a soft drink? A sugar sweetened “juice drink”, maybe even worse. So “healthy”, maybe not.
So?
Wow for McDonalds? That’s crazy
That’s California!
🙁
The cure to high prices is high prices…we are winning!
After school ( 7 th grade) I would stop at McDonald’s on my way home and get a hamburger for a quarter .
That quarter’s worth today, if it was real money back then, is worth about 5 Federal Reserve Notes.
I would walk to Henry’s Hamburger in Rochester Mn. 19c. Was better than McDonalds.
Today, a quarter will buy you a McBlurger the size of a quarter.
Off the net – a big Mac was 65¢ in 1974, I was 14 then.
That was a long time ago! Cheese was an extra 5 cents.
Remember their advertising “Change back from your dollar”?
Pepperidge Farm – and I – remembers.
….and now, if you order a burger without cheese, you don’t get a rebate either.
BK Whopper was 59 cents in Texas in 1973-75.
Tonight’s dinner with husband was In N Out Burger. He had the double double animal style. I only had a hamburger, animal style. Still Great stuff while it lasts.
Protein style, raw and grilled onions, mustard griled, double double, still under five bucks. You get your salad with it. Get the carbos with the fries.
Bring it home, open up a bottle of wine and ketchup.
I haven’t been to a McDonalds… hmm.. five years now?
Protein style is my choice too.
Best hamburger on the go.
Today a double double is $5.15. Fries $2.25. Drink $2.15. That is $9.55. Our local drive in is paying high school kids $18-20/hr. When I go, I get two double doubles and my wife and I split an order of fries. No drinks. We take them home and drink water. Or ask them for a glass of water. I have to say, the kids are nice and the burgers are great. $12 for two burgers and one fry. That’s the way to spend less.
Yep. Haven’t had soda in decades.
In n Out does everything in-house. Their own meat nearby each restaurant/no franchises. And relatively little of their food is “processed.” Their prices will go up, and have, but thankfully not the same situation as McDonalds.
Back in ’64 at the local Sandy’s Drive In a burger, medium coke and fries was $.53. burger 25 cents, fries 15 cents, coke a dime with 3 cents tax.
Yes!☺️
Local food chains are being hit pretty hard too, I’d imagine, though they may be able to source their stuff locally so they might be able to mitigate the inflation.
Local sourcing is mostly good, but it won’t slow the Bidenflation…….it normally costs more unlkess you can get directly to the local source.
Employee costs has been a big part of the inflation, and Crats have been SKYROCKETING those.
Good luck, America.
But the biggest egg producer is touting big gains in the 700+%……
Think it’s happening here. Been buying pound of strawberries less than a dollar.
I thought paying $14.70 for my sub combo in Hawaii was something.
Now that is what it costs to eat the same meal in the lower 48!
Sad.
Shrinkflation didn’t save them from obozoism.
FJB

McDonals parters with Biden Admin to provide Covid Vaccine info. etc etc.
Some myocarditis with them fries?
Partnering with biden for anything will always be a disaster. Wonder how many of their corporate employees died suddenly recently.
McDonalds was a license to print money but Fake #BasementPresident Obama even screwed that up.
On purpose.
Biden heard that phrase and didn’t want ANY competition printing money.
Also, labor cost increase to $15/hour in some places. McCanary in the coal mine.
American corporations are great at one thing. And that is producing profits which in turn will bolster stock price. Through share buybacks, layoffs and complex accounting ,though these layoffs will probably be extreme, mcd ‘s share price is near all time high( approx. 270) and will probably not be effected much by the announcements. Sad but true. Pray and help others
And bonuses if you stay.
8 bucks for a burger!
Or twice that in a specialty burger shop.
Over $10 now for the basic two patty burger at Five Guys………..but it is Nirvana most of the time.
But WE’VE got all out crickets and grasshoppers in their incubators now, we can’t afford to eat real food any longer…….
.
Thanks, Joe, you shipwreck.
Can’t say I feel sorry for them….
I travel for work and eat a lot of meals out. I used to be able to eat a fairly good carry out or drive through meal for under $10. Now, I plan for $12-$18. A salad at Chick-Fil-A is $12 plus a drink.
Fast! 😉
Not only is the salad more costly, it’s @30% smaller!
So true!!! Everything is smaller 😞
Except our tax bill…..
😐
I bet I haven’t had Mc D’s in 4 years or so. I’ll have a Chic-Fil-A anytime over that, and the staff always appreciate the customer above all other chains!
Sadly, no Chic-Fil-A stores here in #49.
This California-raised lady misses her In-n-Out.
On the company P&L your salad is labeled “Cost Of Goods sold” and its a company expense closely controlled by management because, when your salad size is smaller, it increases profit.
So, to make ends meet, it’s either make the salad smaller and increase profit or fire an employee and increase profit.
By the way, chairman of the fed powell is jumping with joy hearing that mccdonalds is firing people. High unemployment, according to him, lowers inflation! Lower inflation means burgers will cost less, right? Maybe a burger will get back to that .65 cents someone was talking about.
I am fortunate.
I have a Papa Murphys nearby.
Salads are huge!
Bigger than you can get at grocery stores.
Their salad deal is 2 for 8.00. Different types of salads. One salad is a meal. Always fresh. Pick them up and take them home.
I belong to their points rewards type program….on your birthday..up to 16.00 off a pizza…or just get a medium size and it’s free! And great discounts with the points.
I go every Friday and get 2– and once a month I have enough points that both salads only cost 4.00!
That is about the extent of my fast food! It’s healthy -so would the salads be considered fast food🤪 ?
Until reading this article and the comments here about the prices ..yikes!
I like my fast food salads even more now. I’ll stick with them.
Crazy.
Still a deal. A lunch for two at a local restaurant is easily $50. But I understand the shock of $30-$40 for McDonalds. If powers-that-be don’t want the country to manufacture but, instead, to be a service economy, then this “war” on food is destroying probably the biggest service industry we have–restaurants (fast or otherwise). Doesn’t add up.
I used to budget $20 for my weekly lunch with friends. Now I budget $25, including tax and a good tip, usually $5. Sometimes it’s more, sometimes less, but averaging $25 over the course of a month works – for now. I get water as my drink.
The left wants scorched-earth. Nothing and no one is safe.
We should repay them the favor. Goddamned commies.
They don’t mean a service economy that supports you (like affordable fast food). They mean a service economy that supports them and you are the one doing the supporting.
As their serf/slave.
Saturday night I went to a local, popular pizza/Italian restaurant with 8 friends. I hadn’t been there in a while.
The salads, side salad size, were $9. A 16” thin crust pizza no toppings was $18. A chicken Alfredo plate was $24!
I won’t be going back any time soon. I can make the same chicken Alfredo meal for 1/4 the price. I can make the pizza for even less.
We all agreed the next get together would be potluck at someone’s house.
Potluck is a great idea!
Depends on who is cooking.
Wow crazy. So I can get a great gourmet meal at my favorite local Mexican restaurant for what it costs to eat at McD’s? Who knew.
Last Friday … Lent … after Confession, Stations of the Cross & Mass … we drove through downtown Baton Rouge McDonalds for Lunch … 4 Fish Filets. No cheese, extra Tartar Sauce … $22.00+ dollars … prompt, hot, delicious … the $22.00+… is NOT McDonald’s fault … the demonRATS and their braindead-biden Prop are destroying America’s businesses with inflation.
We will return to this WONDERFUL downtown Baton Rouge McDonald’s … with their delicious, hot food and EXCELLENT service … on Good Friday … too !!! Thank you !!!
Did you get fries with that, sir?
A well-run restaurant, in ANY venue, is a treasure, isn’t it?
Love the fish sandwiches. Last year they were two for one. Not this year.
Here on the Oregon Coast a big mac meal with medium fries and coke is about $10.50. Signs in the window offer starting wage of $17/hour. We go there maybe once every two years and never go inside as it is filthy and crammed with stinky homeless.
We are over sixty, our local McDonalds is a combination of young junkies, that eat little and steal anything not locked down.
And seniors drinking cheap coffee and no food, most are there for the free internet and a chat with friends.
We are an affluent town..
Stores are begging for staff.
If it were not for the hardworking and pleasant immigrant community ( here it is primarily young Sikh females) the stores wouldn’t have staff!
Cheers!
Same with my city in Ontario. 52,000 people. That is it.
McD’s. BK. DQ. A&W. Popeyes. KFC. All the Tim Hortons (5 of them) Subway. Mr Sub. Staffed by immigrants. In fact, every gas station, and convenience store, is also staffed by young East Indian women. Maybe a few cooks, are males, but they are all East Indian.
They are also all owned by them as well. Every last one.
This is is Northern Ontario, Deke…..up in the bush….. 🙂
Ill say this. I have 0 problem with any of them. They are polite, they work hard, and they are clean, for real.
But the prices are insane.
Im done spending money for fast food. Its stupid!
Nice!!
As I stated on this site, on another thread, tyrants have to eat. Hardworking patriots produce and deliver the food in America. In all-out war, you weaken the enemy by interrupting logistics of critical supplies. Food tops the list of critical supplies and the “good guys” in America produce and transport it.
a trucker’s strike might be the only thing that works. With a well thought out list of grievances, actual pressure might be able to be applied.
It is what the Canadian truckers should have done.
Where I live many of the fast food joints don’t open their dining areas any more. If you want something you must go through the drivethru.
An execption was a local hamberger joint that had its divethru closed so you had to go inside to order or eat.
They actually had a great chili cheeseburger and fries for about $7.50
It was a big bun also.
Beat the heck out if macdummy.😳😂

I personally know a franchise owner with two restaurants – and two other restaurants that I frequent on my way to the office because, frankly, their coffee is better and their employees are exceptionally friendly and professional. They are hard-working, appreciative of our business, and their staff is always dressed neatly and smartly! I like them for breakfast.
Though McD’s is not a mainstay when it comes to nutrition – it is part of American culture and nothing lights up a little kid like a Happy Meal and I won’t deny that a QP w/ Cheese or a Big Mac can be delicious… once in a while. I pray for the Americana that the liberals are killing – but deep inside I see an awakening to The Truth.
The weapons that evil uses against us will turn and only make us stronger. Genesis 50:18-20
I’m sure the libs are relishing in the idea of killing Trump’s beloved burger joint. Well, they are wrong… AGAIN.
serendipitously we might all live a little longer if the McDonalds big mac goes the way of Stuckeys pecan log roll.
THAT HURT Me.
I LOVED the PECAN LOGS
The recession is here…
So McDonald’s has got to bite the Biden Bullet?
Get your McInsectBurger soon, it’s all the rage!

McLayoffs.
I have no idea when I last bought anything at McDonald’s. Maybe early 2020? A couple years ago a single potato with butter and sour cream cost $1.79 at Wendy’s. If I’m going out to eat at those prices, I’ll go to a local restaurant even though their prices are also going up substantially.
I’m sorry for the people getting laid off but I’m not buying their food anymore.
And McDonald’s is actually cheaper than Wendy’s, Chik fil A, Sonic, Bojangles, KFC, etc. I think the only one cheaper than McDonald’s is Taco Bell.
bowl of soup nine bucks at panera.
Purchase Panera Value meals for $6.99. Excellent value, soup and salad, soup and 1/2 sandwich, good preset combos.
Here, McD’s is one of the most expensive fast foods. Just not worth it.
In’N’Out
That’s what a hamburger is all about!
Went to a Sonics in South Texas, it was terrible. I wanted fried food, but the taste was oily and not really fresh at all. Went to Jack in the Box and they gave me a cold super taco. Finally the only thing I order at Mac D is the vanilla cone. Which they have a hard time of messing up. Not going to many others. Whataburger is still good, but really expensive. Crazy. Not going to them now either.
Facilitating? Really?
I M P L E M E N T I N G our demise.
Gal? Who you callin gal? Don’t you know what a woman is?
“McDonald’s franchises were forced by supply cost increases to raise retail prices. The retail prices were raised into a primary customer base that is already under extreme inflationary pressure. The average McDonald’s customer is exposed to inflation at almost every level of their life.”
Sounds like a not-so-secret sauce recipe to refrain from further eating. The beatings will stop when the cries of hunger abate.
When we were stationed in Vallejo, CA in 1969, 1970, (Navy) I worked at a McDonalds that was just opened, for a while. If I remember correctly, the hamburgers were 25cents. That was a while ago, so I could be mistaken.
A Taco Bell opened there during that time, when we could get 10 taco’s for $1.00…….we loved it, as we had never eaten a taco.
Growing up in small town western Pennsylvania around the same time, we walled to the local pizza place and got squares of pizza for 10 cents each.
Sounds like the prices I remember from back then.
Hamburger, small fries and a small drink…
For a period of time, the Big Mac Supper Club advertised “Change back from your dollar.”
WHAT was Bud Light thinking???? I think you meant a guy pretending to be a girl.
they’re pretending to be beer, so ……

Bud Light will pay dearly. No real guys want a bud light featuring a transvestite.
Are there any real guys left?
This crap is why our country is doomed. Corporate is no friend of US.
All because the man behind the White House thinks we can have a carbon free future.
No. It’s so the elites can have a new world order, meaning a world where they control and reap the benefits of our work. Climate change crap is just one of the ways they are working to create their new world.

Remember when we had deflation under Trump. Good times.
All those university educations gone to waste…….meant to be sarcasm not nasty, but how hollowed out are our states and provinces? Everything at the top of our foodchain/leaders are dead from the neck up, I am beyond words pissed off.

Even though it’s just headquarters employees, the handwriting is on the wall for the franchises: Have It Your Way! McDonald’s first fully automated restaurant —with no human contact in Fort Worth! https://cw33.com/news/local/have-it-your-way-mcdonalds-first-location-with-no-human-employees-in-fort-worth/
I’ve noticed since Covid that businesses use the “no-contact” label as a feature, as if any contact with a human being is to be avoided like the plague. Even the no-contact credit cards that you can tap, the self-serve checkouts – which I admit I use most of the time, but for other reasons, not because I’m afraid to have contact with a human.
We refuse to use the automated places.

McDonalds woke and is driven by ESG. ESG is racketeering – increased expenses never have to be itemized to the shareholders nor does the amount skimmed off by the WEF grifters.
https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/our-food-philosophy/commitment-to-quality.html
No coincidence that the inflationary pressure comes at the same time as the ESG vultures are circling…………….
Carl Icahn calls out Wall Street ‘hypocrisy’ over ESG investing in letter to McDonald’s shareholders
Icahn began his letter by challenging asset management firms for what he called “the biggest hypocrisy of our time.” He said large Wall Street firms, banks and lawyers are capitalizing on environment, social and corporate governance investing for the profits without supporting “tangible societal progress.”
“The reality is that if the ESG movement is to be more than a marketing concept and fundraising tool, the massive asset managers who are among McDonald’s’ largest owners must back up their words with actions,” he wrote.
McDonald’s top three shareholders are The Vanguard Group, the asset management arm of State Street, and BlackRock

VG, SS, AND BR? My goodness, no wonder the food tastes like WEF!
So true regarding retail expenses! I don’t want to pay $40 for a fast food meal when I could pay $50 for a full service restaurant, and much cheaper by just shopping well and preparing the meals at home. I was a manager at a McDonald’s 50+ years ago, times (and prices) have sure changed!
Don’t eat at MacDonalds ever, but stopped last week at a Subway for a foot long, chips and a drink and it was $ 18.45. Pretty shocking and not surprising there was no one else in the store,
Coupon(s) here in SCNC..

Interesting. We too in this household are methodically boycotting anything that hints of woke.
Even sports I once played at a half decent level.
My bank account is healthier too.
oh the rednecks will snatch em up to use for target practice!
I can see this marketing ploy causing some teeth loosening fistfights. There will be a few lofo(Lower Info) dirty shirts who didn’t get the memo about who/what is featured on those cans that will be drinking a few cold ones after work at the pallet factory, somebody will crack a joke and then it will get ugly!

Stopped going there many years before they found human dna in the meat. Surprise is anyone goes there ?
And all of this could have been avoid, from the Supply Chain issues to Fuel Costs. All of this is due to BIBLICAL LEVELS of INCOMPETANCE by the man who was the figure head of the Great Cheat in 2020, Joe “Let’s Go Brandon Biden.
The Man even in his prime never had any experience with economics or how businesses run, so it’s no surprise he F’ed up so badly. But instead of trying to fix the problem… they decide to try a witch hunt on the man who was ROBBED in 2020, Pres. Donald J. Trump.
The Democrats NEVER HAD SOLUTIONS, all they have ever done is just creating victims, and leaving those that refuse to be victimized holding the bag.
Brandon will probably announce after the Layoffs, a “A Universal Income”, leaving everyone to face higher prices on everything and be mush poorer.
Hardly incompetence. All part of a well executed long-range global plan to destroy western economies enabled by the Uniparty. Trump is the only one who stood to turn it around in America.
No more Buds for me…after I finish the last four in my fridge.
And send all the free range humans back home…except for the three hanging drywall in my basement, they can stay until they finish the job.
Me too desertson.
Some of the expensive junk food that made Americans obese along with the weird chickman Bud beer.
Maybe I should just burn my money.
