I guess, I don’t understand “The Return” mentality much. My family were all Welsh and Irish, maybe some Scotts in there, but definitely one was Cherokee, my Grandmother.
“The Return” seems to me like just wishing for the past, but that past no longer exists. Not just “no longer exists in Scotland” or Ireland or wherever, but just doesn’t exist anywhere. Our ancestors came here to America for a reason. They were escaping something in some cases, in others they were forced here by people who I wouldn’t give the time of day.
We belong where our family is. Our clan is our family. Our family is our State. And our nation is the United States of America. The greatest nation the Earth has ever seen. You don’t run from it. You don’t settle somewhere else. You stay here. You plant your flag of your family and you say “This is MINE. This is OURS.” and you do not waver from that. You tell the world “I will fight for this, for my children, and their children, and for all of the children who follow”.
Because there is nowhere on this Earth that has anything close to what we have here, and what we have is worth defending, not running away from. Those scots you revere. The Irish and the Welsh of my family, the Cherokee my Grandmother was from who just wanted to belong in this new reality they were in. All of it. We made our bed here in America. And it is a good bed. A bed that life can grow in and the fruits of that. The fruits are good. They are wholesome.
And you do not see that wholesome fruit sprouting in the old world at all. Don’t go back. Stay here. This is where life is, and truth is, and the future is.

My experience is that there is a truth in this, especially if one’s of memories are deep and fond ones. And this is why I am content with sipping my “mental cocktails” which we mixed during our twenty years together in Wales, the country I should have been born in (per Somerset Maugham who said some people are born in the wrong place, but by “serendipity” land where they feel instantly at home, where faces seem familiar, where one feels such an affinity).
I knew immediately what he meant because it happened to me. I was happier during those twenty years than I ever was before or since I moved back. I miss everything about it…our small village, our rural home, the quiet, the beauty of the countryside…
But especially my friends who were and remain family.
In spite of this, however, we couldn’t visit again. Nothing stays the same. People have moved or passed on. Our beautiful town has been altered beyond recognition in the name of “progress”. I could go on…I don’t want my precious memories spoiled by having to see what has happened since we left.
Nevertheless, I can understand those who want to revisit. The danger in doing so, if I can call it that, is having to replace what was familiar and comforting with new memories and perhaps a bit of sadness.
For those who have never been to countries from which their ancestors originated…well, that’s a new fresh experience which I completely understand.
Here is a song which for me explains better than I have just done. Welsh bass/baritone Sir Bryn Terfel. Makes me shed a tear every time.

My happiest years were in Charleston…going back, almost 50 years later? Too much change…too many memories of people long gone, moved on, some to heaven….

Who said her who father wanted to return to New Zealand one more time but passed before he could. His daughter said she grieved for him that he never made it back.
I wanted to say that perhaps it was a blessing that he did not, for the reasons I alluded to above. I felt so strongly about that, recognizing in my own life that keeping good memories undisturbed is probably a very real gift…and a tremendous comfort.

Well said, my friend. Scots=Irish and Cherokee in my family roots also. I have a family photo from around ’18 or so. My dad is a small child in the photo. My “great” generation relatives have mahogany colored skin, prominent cheek bones, and coarse black hair. Yet mysteriously my family name was never on any tribal rolls.
Lol some guy on the internet once told me I didn’t have any Cherokee heritage because I didn’t have a certificate or something. I was like “well, I don’t think my great grandpa signed one to steal a girl from a rez in NC”.
I mean, not something to laugh about, but some people are really gullible about “official documents”.

I learned this song in Italian (I sing, it’s one of my few talents) because my wife heard the version by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. And I really like Sarah Brightman. But my wife went through a (very short) Andrea Bocelli phase after which she never listened to anything remotely good musically since.
So I learned this song in the original Italian. Both the male and female parts. Learned how to pronounce the words, what they meant, over and over rolling R’s and all of it. Sang it to her. She was like “oh that’s cool babe”. And that was it.
Moral of the story, don’t bother learning how to sing a song in another language unless you are on a stage with cameras and people ready to applaud you. Total waste of time.
I did learn some Italian though. Which will never help me in an Olive Garden.
Baritone or tenor?
I am a tenor. But I have a 5 octave range so I can…do what I need to do here and there. Including some sick falsetto and the baritone of some old bluegrass songs for fun. I sing Irish music too, and I generally fall into the tenor parts for those.
I was born into a family of singers. My grandfather was a name in bluegrass music and the whole family is gifted I guess. I am not the best singer in the family, just the most aggressively vocal. My female cousins have voices like angels and I wish the world could hear them sing.
What a gift you’ve been given, Keln. The joy you must get from singing.

I have a history of thinking of a people not seen for a lonnnnng time, only to have them appear shortly thereafter. Uncanny really.
I remember vividly right before he disappeared, he popped in after I had replied to someone else. His comment was unrelated. And he was hurting, missing his Babe so badly. I answered him as best as I could but I knew it was inadequate. Such angst I could feel it.
In any event I am grateful he found a branch and settled in and gave us months of joy. God has him wherever he is, as you have so often said. Still…miss the neck out of him in a way I could never have foreseen when he placed this first post here.

My instincts tell me there’s something not right with Judge Juan Merchan. There’s more to his story than mere conspiracy thinking. If you search Juan Merchan you will find nothing more than his family immigrated from Bogota Colombia to US when he was six yrs old. His father an officer in military. Then the rabbit hole turns black.
Internet info only states Merchan’s father was a military officer – no mention of rank/branch. That tidbit stunk to high heaven because at the time of Merchan’s family immigrating to US, Colombia was embroiled in a FARC insurgency (guerilla/para military and crime syndicates) and decades long US/Colombia military and diplomatic partnership to combat them. Why would a Colombian officer get out of Dodge? Recall Gary Webb’s assertions of CIA involvement with drugs in Nicaragua, Colombia, etc.? FOIA requests revealed CIA admitted to financing a military intelligence networks in Colombia.
I kept searching and kept querying various A.I. platforms and finally after exhaustive back and forth with the A.I. programmed responses, FINALLY a tidbit popped to the surface. A.I. found this obscure blog https://myrlchicmag.ams3.digitaloceanspaces.com/36702-juan-merchan-wiki-how.html that cited:
“People familiar with the judge’s background said that he grew up impoverished in Jackson Heights, Queens. Juan Merchan’s father was a Colombian military colonel. Similarly, Juan Merchant’s mother worked in a variety of industries in New York, including toy and zipper companies, as well as packing food for aircraft meals.”
Still more digging to do but when immigration records of family history, reasons for leaving home country and nonexistent Affidavits of Sponsorship – all required by Immigration Law at the time – fits the pattern of CIA assisted relocation.
Merchan’s family clearly took on a new identity, appearing impoverished lost in Queens NYC. Suddenly Merchan is pivotal in Trump’s criminal trial, his daughter a DNC operative raking in $Millions as she scours DNC donors for $. It simply doesn’t pass the smell test.
Normally I would gloss over this comment like I do most comments because you’re correct and everyone on here is normally mostly correct unless they’re trolling and I just laugh and move on.
Of course the judge is corrupt. Everyone knows it. Which is what boils my bacon when it comes to MTG in Congress the other day, she posed the question to the Democrat side of the “justice” committee” asking “which one of y’all have taken money from the daughter of this judge?”. And it turned into some catfight kerfluffle about fake eyelashes and hair and some “baby girl” comment from AOC. MTG just got sucked into it and got into the catfight instead of sticking to her guns and asking “which of you took money from this” over and over.
Just really, MTG…cmon. They disrupted the questioning of what is perfectly obvious to any one paying attention. Dems, at least in New York if not Dallas where the fake lashes Crocket is from are banking on the money from fundraising by the daughter of this corrupt NY judge in this case and they wanted to blow it up into a catfight so the media doesn’t have to show the actual malfeasance here.
MTG was a total idiot here. They led her down that path and she happily skipped and jumped down it. Stupid. Should have kept posing the question and ignored them and their stupid catfight responses. Man I got nothing against women being leaders, but when you’re stupid, you’re stupid. And I’m calling it.

I have the opposite problem. My wife has the “urge to clean today” and we all have to suffer for it. Not allowed to wash your hands (no towels). Can’t use the toilet (see previous and also the she literally cleans the paper towel roll holders so no TP). Rugs all in the wash. Can’t use any dishes because if they aren’t in the dishwasher, they are all piled on the counter whether anyone ever used them since they were made or not.
Carpets are all wet because she carpet cleaned before you woke up, no matter how early you woke up. Can’t drive the Jeep because she already moved it out to be detailed and the seats are covered in the Armorall stuff.
You basically huddle in the corner and wish for bread and a plastic bottle to pee in until she is done.
Could you speed things along by lending a helping hand?

Wow!! Just like here, Miss P!! We’ve got it down to a fine art now as Chris helps me make the bed each morning. Many hands make light work.
I change our sheets every Friday. It takes me about 6 minutes to get ‘er done, gotten sheet and all. And boy oh boy do I make sure all corners are tugged in tight.

We’ve been married for 25 years this year. I think that is like Silver or something, I dunno. But I’ve learned to stay in my lane. I have a cooler in my study to keep some cokes on ice, and I got some beef jerky and some crackers and I have some other…accoutrements in case of “needs”, and when she declares “cleaning day” on a random day of the week (usually Sunday after church but can be any day), I am prepared. I just retreat to my study and keep the door closed until Dinner. If she needs something, she texts me.
EDIT: I want to be clear here, my wife is reading this and she is laughing pretty hard. She’s not really that bad, it’s just a caveman’s perspective of what is going on.

And as in every family we discuss many topics. Thankfully, Sundance, Ad rem, Wee, Stella, and Menagerie (our gracious hosts) have provided ample room for us to engage with one another on those current events with respectful dialogue.
But as with all families, we have many sides…on this special Thread, we gather together for the beautiful camaraderie… to pray, to laugh, to reminisce, to enjoy all sorts of beautiful music, to share our joys and our sorrows. And above all to let one another know they are not alone is this old world, to provide that human connection with one another which we all desperately need. We know each other’s good hearts even as we do not know each other’s faces…
You are more than welcome to join us in this branch. All are welcome.

Over the last week tornado activity was less resulting in the right turn in the totals. Expect upcoming week to take it back up solidly into second most active season. 2 big multi day threat periods

Ive been real busy since I got home tending to my fabulous oak that has taken alot of damage from the hurricane and two lightning strikes, It is the only tree I have left in the yard and its so precious to me even though its taken a roof or two since we’ve lived here. Now my backyard looks like it did when the hurricane came through a few years ago. Makes me so sad to see all the trees go missing in our neighborhood. I do hope it lives forever 🙂

We are in a cultural emergency. Future generations are unlikely to value freedom and reason as we do.
When the complexity of the world is collapsed into a totalizing black and white morality play pitting the “kind” minority against the unkind majority, the former are romanticized, the latter dehumanized.
Whites are mean, “people of color” nice.
Progressives who view the world through this lens perceive Jews as white villains, Palestinians as minority victims.
These cultural reflexes are especially strong among young Americans, who lack the vestigial patriotism and grounding in free speech that checks progressive extremism among older liberal Americans.
Those who content themselves with the comforting belief that we have reached peak woke and will soon return to classical liberalism need to think again.
The retreat of senior liberals at the The New York Times or Meta from the excesses of cancel culture and the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) agenda cannot halt generational turnover.

In honor of Armed Forces Day…(and for the proud mom’s and dad’s of years gone by).
Conversation from a few years back. My friend, a military lawyer, took one look at my NRA had and opined that she stopped his membership in the NRA after Sandy Hook. I responded that I JOINED the NRA after Sandy Hook. Many conversations and several years later we’re still friends.
Sandy Hook was an instructive historical event for me. It showed me what was coming. The idea that a crazed individual deliberately chose a “gun free zone” where nobody was armed hammered home a great truth. I would never again be comfortable feeling that vulnerable.
So, I happily paid my NRA dues and am glad to have this historic organization protecting my constitutional rights.
I purchased my first handgun shortly afterward. And now . . . I’m grateful to live in a state that recognizes my 2nd Amendment right to carry a concealed weapon for my own defense.

Gun-free zone is certainly a misnomer. They create a fish in a barrel scenario for those who wish to cause mayhem.
There was a case in Killeen
Texas 30 years ago of a mass shooter in a Lubys Cafeteria. At the time
concealed carry was illegal. Suzanna Hupp, whose parents were killed by the gunman, never forgave herself for having left her firearm in the car, rather than bring it into the restaurant. She was sure she could have saved lives – but for the gun free zone. She later ran for and won a seat in the Texas House. Concealed Carry was passed soon after as a result of the Luby’s shooting.
Except when expressly forbidden, I always carry. It’s like a seat belt. You never know when it will be needed.
