Senator Lindsey Graham (U-DC) is trying to get the Libyan band back together as part of the effort to escalate a NATO war against Russia. In the latest development, according to the U.S. version of events, Russia took down a Reaper drone over the Black Sea:
The MQ-9 Reaper drone was making a routine flight before it was intercepted by two Russian Su-27 fighter jets on Tuesday. The warplanes dumped jet fuel on the drone and flew in front of it in a “reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner,” according to a statement from U.S. European Command.
One of the Russian aircraft then struck the drone’s propeller, rendering it unflyable and prompting U.S. operators to ditch it in the Black Sea. (link)
The Russian version of events outlines something akin to Russian pilots throwing a Pepsi at it. As relayed by Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov:
[…] “I explained the position of the Russian Federation,” Antonov said. “I stressed that the American UAV that was moving deliberately and provocatively towards the Russian territory with its transponders turned off violated the boundaries of the temporary airspace regime established for the special military operation, which was communicated to all concerned users of international airspace in accordance with international norms.”
“At the same time,” he added, “the Russian fighters scrambled to identify the intruder did not use on-board weapons or come into contact with the UAV.”
“The unacceptable actions of the United States military in the close proximity to our borders are cause for concern,” Antonov said. “We are well aware of the missions such reconnaissance and strike drones are used for.” […] “What do they do thousands of miles away from the United States? The answer is obvious – they gather intelligence which is later used by the Kiev regime to attack our armed forces and territory,” Antonov said.
[…] “Let us ask a rhetorical question: if, for example, a Russian strike drone appeared near New York or San Francisco, how would the US Air Force and Navy react? I am quite confident that the US military would act in an uncompromising way and would not allow its airspace or territorial waters to be breached,” Antonov said. “We proceed from the fact that the United States will refrain from further speculations in the media landscape and stop making sorties near the Russian borders,” he added. The United States govt/military justified their operation near the Russian border by saying we patrol everywhere in the globe doing these surveillance missions, so the Russians just need to stop being so sensitive:
[…] U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa routinely fly aircraft throughout Europe over sovereign territory and throughout international airspace in coordination with applicable host nation and international laws. In order to bolster collective European defense and security, these missions support Allied, partner, and U.S. national objectives. (link)

Fuel dumping is a common Russian tactic, a marking of territory one might say.
The Russians assert that the craft lost control due to sharp maneuvering, ie evasive maneuvers that pushed it outside it’s control envelope.
It is the Americans that state the propeller was struck, though they’ve not offered any evidence to demonstrate how they know that’s what took place, after all, it’s sensors are not designed to monitor the tail of the aircraft and it was the Russians that reportedly recovered it so our dorks can’t claim physical evidence to back the claim.
The Russian goal was to capture it as intact as possible, not to obliterate it. They timed the crash to be over the shallowest part of the Russian coastline.

I would like to know how a fighter plane can damage the propeller of this drone, so to speak without touching it. That would really be dangerous and not inclusive, even unprofessional, if they tried to clip it with a wingtip or the like.
As to dumping on it. Not respectful and not climate friendly, but fuel at that speed instantly becomes a fog or spray and disappears in the air. Airliners do it all the time.
It would make sense, if the Russians shot it down, but they didn’t. Aircraft don’t just fall out of the sky. Turbulence doesn’t bring down a plane at height.
Most plausible explanation till now is that, like I wrote in the other thread, the drone was intentionally brought to crash by input from the remote operator, with intent to create a classical American crybully situation as ground for escalation.

If they had wanted to take down a drone, they wouldn’t risk their aircraft by “clipping the prop.” It only takes one burst from the machine gun from a suitable safe distance.
Yes, Russians commonly mark aerial territory in this fashion.
As the prop is on the tail, they wouldn’t need to try to clip it with a wingtip, they could just nose into it from the rear, and the drone operator would never see it coming.
A mite risky in the sense that their engines could ingest any debris generated, but it wouldn’t take much of a hit to bust it up.
Still, a prop strike is the American narrative; the Russians assert it went out of control attempting “sharp maneuvers,” ie evasive maneuvers that went awry, taking the craft outside it’s control envelope.
We need to keep in mind that these drones are remotely piloted and that they are not intended to engage in aerial combat. The remote pilot has no seat of the pants sense, can’t sense when control inputs aren’t responding as expected or control is about to be lost, can’t keep his nugget on a swivel to see about the craft, and can only see what a limited camera view and sensors relay to him.
It’s entirely possible that he attempted to evade an aggressive approach and pushed the bird beyond it’s limits, limits he cannot possibly know well because there has never been training to learn and exploit those limits.

Interesting you mention the Russian contribution in WWII. The massive defeat of German forces at Stalingrad (1942-3), without assistance from the Allies (US, UK), turned the war. Zhukov’s troops began routing the Germans out of Russia with the final confrontation being the massive tank battle of Kursk (summer 1943), in which the German Panzers were defeated. By 1944, the tattered Germans had retreated out of Russia and in full flight across Poland and back to Germany. D-Day was not so much an invasion to liberate Western Europe from the Germans (the Germans were beaten by June 1944), but to seize as much of Western Europe as possible in the face of the rapid advancement of the Red Army. The fact that hardly any Russian male between 18-45 was still alive at war’s end still colors how Moscow views the West.
The Russians made heroic efforts in WWII.
But the Russians could not have defeated Germany without the massive US aid funneled into their country starting in 1942 and continuing until the end of the war.

Again, what you said is true, but the war still hung on a thread in December of 1944 at Bastogne and the importance of the crossroads there. Eisenhower knew it and so did the allies along with Hitler’s command. We were very fortunate to win there. A better German strategy, much like the Russian invasions, could’ve had a different outcome possibly.
The Soviets had a massive industrial complex all their own. For several years they were alone doing the heavy lifting in Europe without the allied powers. For the lion’s share of the work they were doing (again without the allies) they needed more than they could produce, and they produced a lot of good stuff.
There were over 3 million German troops that invaded Russia in 1941 along an 1,800 mile front.. If that had been the US, the US would have needed Soviet munitions assistance, too.
But there was more. After Germany was defeated, Stalin cancelled the peace treaty with Japan that he had used to avoid fighting on two fronts. His armies invaded Manchuria and utterly defeated it in eleven days. They swept over multiple geographical obstacles thought to be impenetrable and wiped out a crack Japanese unit that had been stationed there.
Then, Stalin calmly announced that his troops would be in Tokyo within the month. This is “a very short sea journey” if one is coming from the West.
At this point, the Japanese knew that the game was over. (No, the atomic bombs didn’t(!) do it!) They only had the choice of who to surrender to: the Allies, or their ancient enemy. They chose the former, and Stalin did not press the advantage. He chose to remain “an ally.”
But today the Russians will never forget. Victory Day is their most important but very somber national holiday, forever memorializing their first victory against the German Nazis. Every family can bring the photograph of someone they had lost. Their “ghost army” is spooky. (YouTube it.)

May I make one small correction. The irrevocably final nail in the coffin for the Wehrmacht was a masterpiece of maskirovska. Operation Bagration June 1944. Aside from the almost 50,000 sailors and merchant marines that died serving on the convoys bringing Russia the war materials. And tell that to the US & Britt soldiers that died in Italy because Stalin screamed like a baby for the Allies to open second & third fronts so he could eventually take over more lands in Europe. Stalin played the Allies like a fiddle.
The Allies did not open the 2nd front in Europe until after the Russians alone had destroyed the massive German army at Stalingrad. The greatest tank battle in history, Kursk — a Russian only tank victory of the vaunted Panzers, occurred concurrent with the Allied invasion of Italy in the summer of 1943. But the Allied invasion of France, which is what Stalin clamored for earlier in the war (throughout 1942) to relieve the heavy pressure on Russia (remember, the Germans invaded Russia in the summer of 1941), did not occur until the Germans had been driven from Russian lands (1944). The two-pronged invasion by the Allies into Western Europe (through France and Italy) was designed to intercept and stop the westward movement of the Red Army. It was clear from the Allies’ hesitancy to open a second front to aid Russia that Roosevelt and Churchill thought it was advantageous to let the Germans and the Russians slug it out, weakening both sides, before getting involved in retaking Western Europe. Only when the Russians got the upper hand and began routing the Germans did the move to invade France pick up the pace. The Russians had swept westward through Poland into Germany, and southwards through Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, with the aim of hitting Germany from the south, but were eventually stopped in 1945 by the border guards of Liechtenstein, the last vestige of the Holy Roman Empire (bad enough fighting one empire – The Reich – without having to tackle another, or so the story from Moscow goes). Stalin saw the continued occupation of Eastern Europe as a largely defensive maneuver (a buffer zone providing defense in depth) against what he perceived as unfaithful allies.
One of the real heroes to the Russians was Yugoslavia. The Germans had seized Yugoslavia and were planning Operation Barbarossa (the invasion of Russia) for the Spring of 1941. But an uprising temporarily overthrew the puppet regime. Hitler threw a hissy fit and put Barbarossa on hold for six weeks while he conducted Operation Retribution against the Yugoslavs. Once the rebellion had been put down to manageable levels, the invasion of Russia began. What a difference those six weeks made.

The Russians held this meeting deliberately as a direct warning to the U.S. who never listens.
Two days later Russia hit a NATO control center in western Ukraine with a supersonic Khinzal missile killing many western military officials. Zelensky then announced it was a “bad day for Ukraine”.
Now the Russians took out a U.S. spy drone flying where it shouldn’t be.

While I can’t say why or even IF the drone went down, I can say this, with a great deal of confidence of what I’m saying because when young, I was a U.S. Navy fighter pilot, operating from ships and I did intercept “targets” with my plane and I/WE would never fly into a spinning propellor with my/our aircraft. The potential for disaster is far to great and I’m not referring to the other aircraft! I believe NOTHING that this government tells me at this point. In fact, I am ashamed to admit that I was ever a part of it.
