Officials in the state of Texas are worried the emergency measures taken Wednesday to avoid blackouts may not be enough. The utility operators urgently need the wind to start operating the windmills or things might get worse. Reuters News has more:
(Reuters) – Texas’s power grid operator on Wednesday took emergency measures to avoid rolling blackouts as soaring electricity demand threatened to outpace available supplies amid a stifling heatwave.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the grid that serves more than 26 million customers, initiated a rarely used emergency program that is triggered when supplies fall below a critical safety margin.
Earlier, ERCOT had urged residents to cut power use during the hottest hours of the day and warned of a risk for rolling blackouts. Residents were asked to turn up thermostats, defer the use of high-power appliances and turn off swimming pool pumps.
The emergency notice came after ERCOT began paying suppliers an average of $5,000 per magawatt hour to keep generators running. That price is the highest the grid operator pays. “They were pulling a lot of levers to avoid going into emergency operations and rolling blackouts,” said Doug Lewin, president of consultants Stoic Energy LLC. I have 38 years experience as an Electrical Engineer and have worked in the nuclear power industry. Keep going RF Burns. Your knowledge is a huge plus but now you work towards that all-important thing: Experience. It can do as much or more than just the knowledge.
Maybe they fired all of the experienced engineers and hired a bunch of people fresh out of college with great ideas and admirable motivation but no real world experience to guide them. It happens in IT all of the time, why not in the energy industry?
To all my Texas brethren. I urge you in the strongest possible terms. Crash the system now! Doing so now will result in less overall pain and fewer deaths down the road. Turn on your AC with a low thermostat setting. Run your pool pumps on high. Use your washer and dryer and dishwashers. Charge your vehicles. RIP OFF the Band-Aid. The sooner the system crashes, the sooner it can be rebuilt to what it should be, so that this cycle is never allowed to be repeated. And please, take care of your neighbors.

I care for a few neighbors in their 80’s and 90’s and one who is only in her 30’s that rely on the grid to keep them cool or warm enough in their condition much less have access to electrical medical devices that they are dependent on.

I disagree. If it fails then you’ll have engineers out there making it work again. Besides the grid cannot just “fail”.
Safety systems will energize and protect the upstream as well as downstream devices and especially the homes. There may be some systems that are damaged but for the most part, the important things will be protected.
The SCADA operators will bring things back on line, it may take a while in some cases but the “grid” will come back up and start operating with hard work by engineers, technicians, and linesmen (the good guys).
Besides, I’m pretty sure that some government entity mandated the use of windmills and PV panels because the manufacturers threw around some campaign cash.
Don’t blame the operators et al. They’re just trying to do their jobs.

I honestly think it is certainly possible, but even if my answer was no I would still be protecting my family and neighbors lives now in the hope that there is a solution in the future and I can keep them alive and safe in the meantime.

The RAT (Ram Air Turbine) on a large commercial airliner can be deployed to generate and provide limited, emergency electrical power to certain, specific systems and components in the event of a catastrophic systems failure during flight. I have never seen or heard of a RAT being used to get the jet off the ground [sarc]. It is uneconomical to have fossil fuel fired generators in a stand by position in the event green schemes fail to produce energy. Plants are not built to operate a few times a year.

The Governor of our state appoints the Public Utility Commission. Our PUC, is deregulated and apparently only functions in the best of circumstances.
