Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg appeared on the DC narrative shaping program hosted by swamp gatekeeper Chris Wallace. Within the interview Buttigieg was questioned about why West Coast port backups are worse now than before the White House announced their solution to operate ports 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Buttigieg proclaimed the ports are being impacted by the pandemic, and ships stuck in China are the reason why ships are sitting off the coast of California. Yeah, try to square that circular logic. LOL. The scale of incompetence, even in common sense politispeak, is off the charts. The illogical statements by this guy are legendary; however, he outdid himself today.
Eventually Pete weaves his way through fourteen nonsensical catch phrases to get to a point where he proclaims nothing in the supply chain will start being more efficient until everyone is vaccinated. And yes, it appears that he is so stuck in pretzel-speak, Buttigieg actually believes that.
All of that said, I wouldn’t post this for review if it wasn’t for the ‘hard-hitting‘ segment from Wallace that comes right after. You just gotta watch (prompted):

As noted, and as previously outlined, the issues with the backlog of the California ports have absolutely nothing to do with rapid unloading of ships and container vessels. The issue is the inability of California truckers to move those containers. The problem is a shortage of CA emission compliant internal transportation trucks to move the containers out of the port and into the U.S. mainland.
As a result… the politically expedient goal to get rid of the optical problem (the ships) by offloading containers into a California port system, that is already overwhelmed with tens-of-thousands of containers, is only making the original issue exponentially worse. More people are now starting to understand the internal issue that has been created by recent California laws, rules and regulations.
Daniel Greenfield at Front Page Magazine has a solid outline of the emission compliance issues and the problem of independent truckers not being able to work in California:

Excellent article. Yes, it is from the perspective of a truck driver but the problem is a complex system problem with many aspects such as he describes from his perspective. The DeMocRats can fuss, fume, and pontificate but they cannot solve problems…only create more. As with most complex problems that involve multiple (dis)organizations, each optimizes its own subsystem with little regard for anything but themselves and usually at the expense of others and hence the entire system.
The system is too centralized. That’s the issue.
But bureaucrats will just demand more of the same.

I heard a trucker call in to Glen Beck awhile ago saying the back ups were at the warehouse levels. He delivered a trailer of clothing from the port to a warehouse and they made him wait there four days while they unloaded it as they needed it because the warehouse was full. They are using the trucks as warehouses. He said he only got paid for the load and lost four days of work and that’s why some truckers are quitting for a while. The problem as he sees it is too much money at once going into the economy and everyone spending it too fast.

What everyone is forgetting is the life-cycle of a container shipment:
The problem is that the containers are not getting back on the ships. Well, why not? Storing empties in the freight company’s yard will not get them back on the ship and you cannot wish more of them into existence on the other end.
The issue is right here in the United States; we have myriad problems here in the distribution system from beyond the port to the end destination. If the goods cannot get delivered and the container unloaded and returned then it does not matter how many you stack in Long Beach. Indeed stacking them can get stupid fast since you may turn one operation of loading a container onto a transportation device into many if the one you need is at the bottom of a stack!
All that is going to happen is that you will absorb a couple of days worth of containers and free up a few carriages which will immediately be filled, depart the port and fail to return on schedule with empty or for-export filled containers just like all the other ones have.
I get it that everyone would like to just wave a magic wand and make the problem go away. There are people out there who claim they can — and have. They’re wrong. I may not be the CEO of Flexport but you shall see that going from a 2-stack to either 4 or 6 (depending on approvals) in the trucking company yards will solve nothing; the problem simply does not lie there.
The problem is that all the constraints have produced a labor shortage end to end in various places, including in warehouses, transportation hubs, drivers and similar. As a result the freight is not being unloaded and the empties not being returned on schedule.
When the ship gets here and unloads its several thousand containers those containers must ultimately return to the source to be loaded again. If the cycle is interrupted and there are none to load for the return trip then the source will run out. Unloading more containers into a chain of events that is constrained all the way through does not accelerate the rate of return for the journey back to the source!
You have to return the cycle from unload time to the return of the empty to the port to its expected rate and time in-transit or you do nothing. That means getting rid of the reasons that problem exists – which all revolve around labor and working conditions.
His solution? Drop the mandates, or else!

listening to an independent trucker talk about the port problem. His take is that much of the problem is Teamsters being Teamsters. You show up and wait to be assigned a load, wait to pick up your load, wait for someone to confirm you been loaded the correct stuff, and get in line to leave.
