Don’t Say Ain’t Cuz Ain’t Ain’t Right

We Treepeers seem to have a thing for vocabulary, proper word usage, and etymology, from Pat’s pet peeves about homonyms (try saying that 3 times), to the etymology expertise (amateur he says) from the famed Chupacabra Language Institute & Highway 80 Sportsbar. Here is an offering from a post by Mr. Chupacabra from yesterday. Oh, dear, I am not sure if that should be Dr. Chupacabra, or perhaps E. Chupacabra, Esq.

Factoid from the Chupacabra Language Institute & Hiway-80 Sports Bar: The term “bedlam” came to us from London, via the Old Bedlam Insane Asylum. Back in the 1800s, the poor folks would give the keeper a few pennies, and they would stir up the poor mental patients for the amusement of the onlookers. The noise soon came into London households in the form of a mother’s reproach to noisy children. She’d say to children, “Quite! It sounds like Bedlam in here!” The Old Bedlam is still with us in the London district of Lambeth. It now houses the main building of the Imperial War Museum. If you doubt me, there’s an informational plaque just outside the entrance. :-)

Since we all seemed to enjoy and learn from each other, as always, I thought we could use a new post to keep it going. Consider this a virtual bar stool at the Chupacabra Bar. Thanks to Elvis for the inspiration, and of course the education and humor.

God Told Pat Robertson Who The Next President Will Be

I think it is kind of unsporting of him to refuse to share. But God wants him to keep it a secret apparently.

Christian leader Pat Robertson is claiming that God gave him insight regarding who America’s next president will be. But the conservative media mogul isn’t willing to name names.

“I think He showed me about the next president, but I‘m not supposed to talk about that so I’ll leave you in the dark — probably just as well — but I think I know who it’s gonna be,” Robertson saidon Tuesday‘s episode of the Christian Broadcast Network’s “700 Club.” (more…)

Bachmann Calls It Quits

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — In the wake of a disappointing finish in Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses, Rep. Michele Bachmann announced Wednesday that she is suspending her campaign for president.

“Last night, the people of Iowa spoke with a very clear voice, and so I have decided to stand aside,” she said at a hastily-arranged news conference here.

“I have no regrets,” she added. “None whatsoever. We never compromised our principles.” She said she “looks forward to the next chapter in God’s plan.”

Bachmann did not endorse another candidate. (more…)

The People Who Walked In Darkness Have Seen A Great Light

Reading 1 Is 9:1-6

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster
you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.
For every boot that tramped in battle,
every cloak rolled in blood,
will be burned as fuel for flames.
For a child is born to us, a son is given us;
upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast
and forever peaceful,
from David’s throne, and over his kingdom,
which he confirms and sustains
by judgment and justice,
both now and forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this! (more…)

The Fourth Sunday Of Advent

Gospel Lk 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.”Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Here’s To The Irish

Yesterday I attended my first wake, a fine Irish tradition. This followed a funeral truly meant to celebrate a life well lived, with just exactly the Bible readings you need to hear at a funeral, especially for a loved one. The wake, the food and beverages served, the people in attendance, all served to remind me of the joy the Irish take in life, and how they even manage to bring a smile with them to say goodbye to someone special. In honor of the wonderful character and gifts the Irish bring us, here is your joke and story thread for today. Escape the holiday stress and share a laugh with a friend for a few minutes.  (more…)

We Deserve A Little Fun

It has been a rough few days. We have had Glenn Beck tank the Tea Party, viewed the results of more (confusing and conflicting) polls, and had quite the Libertarian – Conservative debate here in the tree. In honor of our turmoil, take a moment for a fun little quiz. What kind of a Liberal or Conservative are you? Share your results and your thoughts, and here’s one to start us off. Why do we have so many labels nowadays ? When I was a child, you were a Christian or not, but you weren’t an Evangelical or a Fundamentalist. You were a Republican or a Democrat, not a Neo-Con or a Blue dog. Anyhow, here is the link.

The Third Sunday Of Advent

Reading 1Is 61:1-2a, 10-11

The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor,
to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and release to the prisoners,
to announce a year of favor from the LORD
and a day of vindication by our God.
I rejoice heartily in the LORD,
in my God is the joy of my soul;
for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation
and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,
like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem,
like a bride bedecked with her jewels.
As the earth brings forth its plants,
and a garden makes its growth spring up,
so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise
spring up before all the nations.

The Second Sunday Of Advent

GospelMk 1:1-8

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way.
A voice of one crying out in the desert:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.”
John the Baptist appeared in the desert
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People of the whole Judean countryside
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
were going out to him
and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River
as they acknowledged their sins.
John was clothed in camel’s hair,
with a leather belt around his waist.
He fed on locusts and wild honey.
And this is what he proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
