It’s different if you grow up in the north. Snowmobiling, skiing, ice fishing, hunting and ice skating are all fun and natural. To people that move here they get bored in the north.

I avoided commenting on the Lindsay Clancy trial because its nuanced and emotional but the implications are enormous so I am going to say something now. A lot of people are calling that one juror who wouldn’t join the other eleven irrational. But, that juror is probably the only one asking the right questions imo: where is the evidence that she lacked the capacity to know it was wrong or to stop herself? And, maybe, where do we draw the line on what an ostensibly insane person is allowed to do when the doubt the defense manufactured rests on nothing in the record before the killings? It seems that the entirety of the defense position rests on improbable probabilities and that’s a low bar for such a heinous act.
1. Postpartum psychosis is rare, and almost always happens in the first 4 weeks. The idea that some psychiatrists extend the postpartum window to a year is true, but for depression and anxiety. The evidence isn’t strong for psychosis, and its latching on to improbability
2. The strongest risk factor for postpartum psychosis is preexisting bipolar disorder or a prior psychotic episode. She had neither before her third child. The real time evidence from her doctors/providers indicate this. The bipolar label that showed up was after significant polypharmacy, and any good psychiatrist will tell you that you cannot diagnose primary disease when multiple drugs could be offending agents. Drug-induced psychosis would show better temporal correlations with her medications and should be a mitigation argument at sentencing. Again, very improbable alignment
3. The proxy for intent is planning, and she clearly planned… she sent her husband to some restaurant they don’t normally go to, checked the drive time, texted a specific order at 5:07 pm… she killed her children in sequence. That’s demonstrating real time decision making. I don’t understand how they circumvented this. Again, very improbable that she was able to make decisions up until it becomes a liability
4. This idea of a “voice” that commanded her is so post-hoc as a defense. The ltierature on command hallucinations show most people don’t obey them and the compliance occurs when the voice is familiar. This was a first time voice she only ever reported 2 weeks after killing her kids. And this first time voice asked her to… kill all her children AND she listened to this unfamiliar voice? Again… very improbable
The improbability is so stark that it’s almost undeniably a sympathy verdict from the jurors conflated with a misunderstanding of postpartum disease. The easiest way to demonstrate this is to take a father with the same chart, months of documented depression, insomnia, suicidal ideation but no psychosis then strangles his kids after arranging for his wife to be away from the house. 100% guilty.
Everyone knows postpartum disease is real and important. Everyone knows she’s sick and needed help, possibly much better management. You can even argue she is insane. What I see to be the most important is where we draw the line of what we allow under the “insanity” rule. Massachusetts forces a binary verdict of guilty or not criminally responsible but this is a case for the third that other states have and which is guilty but mentally ill. We have a responsibility to speak for the unheard voices of these children and future children and say we draw the line at murdering children.
Good information. One thing that kind of made me take notice was she had so little emotion over the very detailed telling about how and what she did when she strangled those babies. I know it was several years ago, but she showed nothing really about being upset, sorry for doing it, nothing. Same as her phone call to her husband while she was in the act of killing those kids. Calm, talking normally etc. Even of she was in the midst of a psychosis episode you would think there’d be some stress or something off about her conversation, but there wasn’t.
She did it. She planned it. She is guilty. Period.

There was apparently testimony during trial regarding Clancy’s diagnosis. Hat tip to Harrison’s post yesterday on the PT thread. His comment was a reply to Wethal at 2:44 pm. Below is my copy/paste and, according to this, Clancy was diagnosed with a mood disorder, not psychosis, not postpartum:

She was never diagnosed with postpartum depression or psychosis. She was not on 13 medications at once. She was not “hearing voices.” She was not abandoned by her family.
She was diagnosed with a mood disorder – never psychosis – and went to a variety of doctors who all prescribed different medications, which she took unreliably and not simultaneously.
She only heard a voice one time – and that was right before she killed her kids. Extremely atypical for psychosis.
She carefully planned her children’s murders down to the minute. She researched the distance of a restaurant she’d ask Patrick to go to. Added on a last-minute errand before he left. Calmly answered his phone call in the middle of her crime. Brought her children down to the basement one by one, overpowering their resistance and killing them slowly.
It does seem like she had support from her family. She may have still been overwhelmed, but it’s not true that all of her cries for help went unanswered.
I originally placed too much blame on the many SSRIs she was prescribed. For years on my show, I’ve talked to health professionals who have been warning about the violence-inducing effects of these drugs, and I thought Lindsay’s case may be an example of that reality.
Is it still possible these SSRIs had a negative effect? Absolutely. But the case that these drove her into a psychotic episode is weak.
This evidence continues to reveal, in my opinion, that Lindsay Clancy methodically murdered her children and she was fully aware of what she was doing.

Decades ago, when I thought about retirement, all I wanted was to life a quiet life with dignity and kindness, not be a burden to my children, volunteer my time for some “worthy cause” (e.g., pushing paper for local Sheriff’s office…) But the fact that I could readily name each of those people in the boxes confirms that my retirement went in an entirely different direction.
It is not possible anymore to live a “quiet life.” Warning to the West comes to mind. We each do what we can, in our own way. What we each do matters. If we ever reach the point where we stop believing our individual lives matter, then those in the boxes have won.

The Navy or “squids” as this Army brat would say have only one boot camp. It is the Great Lakes Navel Center. 9 weeks training for the beach vollyballers.
Yeah I know that, been to Great Lakes multiple times while in the Coast Guard.. It’s the closest PX for many USCG small stations in the 9th District. It’s also where we had to go if we had any serious sickness, injuries or need other surgeries. The USCG is usually to small for those kinds of facilities. Only the two boot camps and schools on Governor’s Island had them. We had to go to public health services doctors and dentist for routine stuff. It’s small armed service.
I can remember monthly family trips to the Great Lakes PX. That was a long time ago. My father retired from the Army as a Major. He had PX access as a benefit. When he passed he was buried at Ft. Sheridan. I have no idea how that area looks today.

Other than possibly the AF, all services taught their members how to fold their clothes for best appearance and least space in a sea bag or ruck sack (or at least used to).

Ship space is very limited thus the sea-bag and folding clothes to have the least creases and wrinkles and take up the least space.
Contrary to popular belief, U.S. Air Force personnel were instructed on how to fold clothes in Basic Training. We just didn’t have to have our underwear issued like some people who came into the service without any.
To this day, I could bounce a quarter off my “bunk”.
As kids, we were all taught to make our beds this way!

His children were raised as Americans, not Italian-Americans. I have his immigration papers and citizenship papers. I know what ship he arrived on and when. When stationed in NYC, I went with one of my brothers to visit Ellis Island. It was great experience.

I am Lutheran Missouri synod. Even though most all of my extended family is Roman Catholic and my wife was catholic so know a lot about it, but not everything.
If you mean the new nondenominational churches be careful there, many are anything but traditional. The worst churches are those that ordain and promote women to leadership positions like bishops and president. I never understood St. Paul’s prohibition on women speaking (preaching) in church, I do now.
There are Catholic Churches that are traditional. Some have the Latin Mass.
I am not Catholic, but I once accompanied my good friend to a Latin Mass. I simply closed my eyes and listened. It was a beautiful experience. (I was also explicitly invited to participate, which I politely did.)

I agree and we have a friend whose 1 child has cystic fibrosis-there are new medications that extend life beyond what was previously possible.
