Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after the 12-member jury could not reach a unanimous verdict in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy.
The defense counsel of Ms Clancy violated every form of judicial ethics in his effort to expose and pressure the one male juror who refused to accept a not guilty verdict and stood his ground. We should not know the identity of the jurors; however, the female foreperson worked with defense lawyer Kevin Reddington to assemble pressure against the juror who would not acquit Clancy.
What took place in this Massachusetts courtroom and jury deliberation undermines the foundation of the system of trial by jury. During actual deliberations defense counsel was openly pressuring Judge Sullivan to remove the juror who would not change his position. A mistrial had to be declared, and Attorney Reddington then went outside and publicly called for retaliation against the male juror who would not accept the position of the female jurors. This is quite remarkable.
Massachusetts – After seven days of deliberation, the judge in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial declared a mistrial because the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, with one juror refusing to join the eleven others.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington asked Judge William Sullivan to remove the holdout juror, but Sullivan refused. However, Sullivan granted Reddington an hour to request an emergency stay from a higher court on the mistrial declaration. This would delay the start of a new trial.
Clancy’s case will likely be re-tried with a new jury; until then, she will remain in a psychiatric facility in northeastern Massachusetts. (more)

Jury secrecy and sanctity violations this extreme are horrific and destabilizing to the entire judicial system.

It is actually a Dan Sickles’ defense. He murdered his wife’s lover (the son of Francis Scott Key) and then claimed temporary insanity. He was the first person to successfully make such a defense and was acquitted. Didn’t seem to impact his career though since he was appointed a Corps commander in the Army of the Potomac and nearly lost the Civil War by disobeying a direct order and getting his corps routed. Only the heroics on Little Round Top stopped Longstreet from rolling up the whole Union Army.

This murder is reminiscent of Andrea Yates in TX. She, too, was a nurse. She drowned her 5 children in a bathtub in 2001.
One of my adult children suffers from Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Type. It’s a Schizophrenia spectrum disorder, somewhat like A Beautiful Mind blended with a mood disorder. This has a strong genetic component in his case and runs in his father’s side of the family. His first massive psychotic episode occurred when he was around 20 years old, necessitating an involuntary hospitalization of 3 1/2 weeks. During that hospitalization he had many, many terrifying psychotic delusions (there were people working on a rooftop across the street that were aiming a laser at him to shoot him, the medical staff was trying to pin a murder on him, etc). His blood pressure went so high that he was evaluated for kidney disease. When we visited during visiting hours and I was allowed to rub his back, his blood pressure dropped to near normal.
It’s 25 years since that episode, and he has come a long, long way. The road has been difficult and still is, but he is a great blessing. He recently earned a degree summa cum laude from a nationally accredited university, by taking 1 class at a time over many years.
All of that to say that he remembers his perceptions during that first hospitalization, and even though he realizes that they could not possibly have been real, they still feel real when he thinks about them. And despite all of that, he insists that he always knew the difference between right and wrong (even at his most psychotic), and that people who use psychotic disorders as an excuse for murder are lying.
You may want to look into the work of Dr. Chris Palmer at Harvard. He is researching the use of therapeutic ketogenic diets for serious mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

You are right. Nothing is an accident. I truly believe that sometimes my angel “talks” to someone else’s angel, and then those two angels somehow coordinate complete strangers reaching out to each other. That is what happened here. Evie started the conversation, which must have been painful in recalling the difficult times her son (and by extension, she) has experienced. Then I was prompted to respond, because Evie’s narrative touched me. And then you chimed in:)
Many years ago my son took off after his dad (my husband) died. For months I had no idea where he was. Then late one night, out of nowhere, my son shows up at my front door, weary, hollow-eyed, and afraid to look me in the eye.
I remember my inner guidance very clearly warning me, “Get your ego out of the way. Don’t blow this or you will lose him.”
I smiled and reached out to my son and gently touched his shoulder. I said, “You look so tired, dear. Do you just want to lay down and sleep for awhile, or are you hungry?”
I will never forget how he looked up from the ground with the most profound hope in his face. “I am really tired, Mom. I just drove 1500 miles to get here.”
This happened nearly 30 years ago. I have never asked him where he was. He has never volunteered. But over the years, from time to time, he has quietly mentioned that, because I didn’t rail at him or make accusations, or demand answers, from the moment I opened that door and smiled in welcome, his life changed. He recognized that all the time he was gone, I had never stopped loving him and had never given up hope. And that, in turn, gave him hope to turn his life around.
I am crying as I write this, crying with gratitude. What lovely coordination among three angels and Moms who love their sons:) (Well, six angels if you count our sons among them!)

Absolutely nothing is an accident. 25 years ago it was a very hard thing to deal with my son’s psychosis. It certainly blew up the future that I had expected for him and for us. I wasn’t able to visualize what was going to occur in the future. I was married for over 42 years to the best person I have ever personally known. He died in the summer of 2020 (at home, on hospice, surrounded by people who loved him) of a rare form of early onset dementia that was a blend of what Bruce Willis has (Primary Progressive Aphasia, a type of Frontotemporal Dementia) and Lou Gherig’s disease/ALS. He lived for approximately 1 1/2 years after he was diagnosed by the doctor who was in charge of a very large memory care research program at our state’s medical college.
The last 3 1/2 months of his life were wild and traumatic as the damage spread to the behavioral part of his brain. There were several incidents where he became psychotic and violent. He was hospitalized twice but thankfully they did not keep him in the VA hospital (since it was during the height of the covid madness). The only time he was calm was when I was holding his hand, I had to sleep in a chair next to him and it was hard to even get away to bathe.
That son of mine who has Schizoaffective Disorder was the one who stepped in multiple times when I was on the verge of a meltdown and stuck his finger in the dike like the little Dutch boy. I cannot tell you how many times he walked in and said the most unbelievable thing at the exactly perfect moment. I am now certain that was directly prompted by the Holy Spirit.
Two of my adult sons live with me still. I have a much fuller life than most of the widows and widowers that I know. I am blessed on so many levels. I know their father is proud of both of them (warts and all) and is rejoicing.
