There is a general rule that applies to geopolitical contexts surrounding 96 hours or four days. The timing is the difference between an event happening Day one, the analysis of the event by nation states communicated to leadership, and the policy shift outcome in Day four. The rule of 96 is consistent and it is worth understanding.
Four days ago, the EU oil disruption from Saudi Arabia’s East/West pipeline event was noticed. In the four days between event day and policy day (#4) the EU have been beating the drumbeat for war against Russia. However, you will notice the shift in tone and policy now that we have reached day four. Analysis has reached policy makers. You might say reality sets in.
Europe now recognizes a vulnerability that was not in their policy briefs 96 hours earlier. Things change {SOURCE}, and the quiet stuff starts to become visible. Russia has been sending France oil/gas energy products, quietly. Macron needed the internal stabilization because he’s been up against a wall. On top of all his other issues, Macron could not afford an energy crisis.
Simultaneously, despite what we have been told by Western media, the 5,000 strike drones into the Moscow region should again be taken in context. Russia is an analog system in a digital world. Russia is exceptionally resilient and can repair and recover much faster than western analysts ever fathom. Again, apply the ‘rule of 96.’
Russia is now overproducing diesel fuel. Wait, what(?) you might ask. It’s true. Russian strategic diesel fuel reserves are now full and overproducing 15% beyond storage capacity. {SOURCE} So, where is the excess capacity going? To the “stans” in Central Asia, from there it ships to forward destinations. Turkey is a dependent beneficiary. Do you remember the strategic agreement between the USA and Kazakhstan? {Source}
Russia increased diesel supplies to Mongolia by 73.4% in August from July to 215,000 metric tons, while shipments to Kyrgyzstan surged 16.4 times to 72,000 tons and deliveries to Tajikistan rose 3.5 times to 56,000 tons. Russia also exported 28,000 tons of diesel to Kazakhstan after making no deliveries there in July. {source}
As the Saudi energy disruption, a problem that travels like boxcar impacts in a train collision, now reaches the EU, the NATO alliance begins to react. Their policy briefs are different than they were four days ago.
Saudi Arabia is now producing again on the previously closed East/West pipeline; however, it will take time to reach the EU. A policy window is opened by the disruption. This is the window where President Trump is operating, and it is timed with the UN General Assembly meeting.
On the potash announcement by President Trump and subsequent notes by Belarussian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, remind yourself that potash is not sold by government – it is sold by companies, from one to the other. Lukashenko is an ally of Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin. Lukashenko has one foot in the EU perspective and the other in the Russian perspective.
Potash from Belarus can be potash from Belarus. Potash from Belarus can also be potash from Russia. Again, companies are involved and should be considered when government officials make announcements. There is no shortage of potash from Russia, but there are political constraints from anything surrounding Russia.
A company who does business in Belarus and Russia is not uncommon. Belarus may not officially have potash to deliver (Lukashenko), but also potash can be abundant in supplies as inventories by companies who do business with Belarus (John Coale). Who is John Coale? Where was John Coale, U.S. special envoy for Belarus, four days ago?

Four days ago, Russia had maxed out storage for diesel fuel and was shipping excess capacity to Central Asia, as President Trump was asking Volodymyr Zelenskyy not to target Russian diesel refining capacity.

Had heard of, and used the 72 hour rule, am now embracing the 96 hour rule – it really does provide for the longer view, bigger picture, etc.
Have been thinking a lot as to why the UK, with its German counterpart, does everything it can to keep the “Russia is the evil empire” mantra alive and remembered a tidbit from history.

A few thoughts on what I just read:
In my neck of the woods, we often say ‘Let it soak for a while”, which is our version of the 96 rule.
Smart people recognize the fact that there IS A 96 Rule in the first place- so allow the time needed for the situation to play out before forming your thoughts and taking any action- to not do that means you can wind up prematurely thinking and acting not then fully informed –which can be very unwise given the situation.
Just as fruit ripens, so do situations. Best to not bite in prematurely.
I have understood that farmers are in big trouble because of the prices on diesel, then combine that with the fertilizer prices.
So I took this Potash deal to be a help for the farmers.. which I thought was a good idea given that these are Trump voters largely I suspect. But also we need the farmers doing okay no matter how they vote.
I’ve lived long enough to know that there is always Workarounds.
When a door is shut, a window opens, this is a real thing.

We Need A Smarter Class Of Energy ‘Experts’
Just a week ago, the media expert class was actively selling a major crisis story. Saudi Aramco’s East-West Pipeline had been hit. Pumping stations were damaged. Yanbu loadings were dead. The line that had been moving about 4 million barrels a day around a disrupted Strait of Hormuz was offline with no easy fix in sight.
Even though Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC on September 15 the Saudis would have throughput running “in a few days,” the outlet quoted a consulting “expert” who claimed it would be months before that happened.
What it is, is another reminder that energy commentary has a competence gap. Too many “experts” can forecast 2050 demand destruction to the third decimal and cannot distinguish a restart from a reconstruction. They hear “damaged pumping stations” and kneejerk to sounding the alarm. Operators hear the same words and ask which stations can be bypassed this week. One of those groups just moved oil. The other group is still explaining why that should have been impossible.
The honest timeline was never “months of nothing.” It was days to get something moving and weeks to put the system fully back where it belongs. Aramco just made that distinction in public, faster than anyone other than Secretary Wright predicted.
We really do need a better class of experts, and everyone involved needs to finally figure out that Chris Wright is a clear example of what a real expert looks and acts like.

I just bought a 2026 diesel pickup last week. No I don’t like the DEF, but my old truck (14 years) is getting tired enough I needed to buy something more reliable.
I don’t like the outrageous diesel prices at all, but I have confidence in current US leadership such that the prices WILL come down, and likely soon.
Having been deployed for the Gulf War, I can say I do not like the Middle East even more than I dislike the high prices of diesel, and absolutely despise leaders who looked the other way, or actively aided the crazy Iranians for 50 years or more. I particularly DESPISE those leaders who ignored Iran killing or maiming many hundreds of US soldiers during the Iraq war.
Iran needed to be dealt with. For years.
There is no Democrat running on any platform that if they win, will fix anything wrong with the world today, or in the foreseeable future.

He’ll tell me Russia does just as much with less complexity – modern, functional, efficient, simple systems. They work with equally advanced suppliers from other countries – just not much with US. 😐

According to public information available, it is unrefined fuel. But I don’t believe that one bit. I believe we have jet fuel diesel, gasoline everything in smaller amounts, raring, and ready to go in a location that nobody knows it is located.
SPR is many, including Cushing OKLA. SPR storage is not simple and can be damaged if not handled properly. Sounds easy when you say it fast, but it is complex.
The production costs are not necessarily reflected accurately in the costs to the end users in most of the world with it being a commodity with a controlled price.
Probably some political jujitsu move in floating the idea of restricting US exports of Diesel.
The one thing you can count on is President Trump’s knack for getting people to unmask themselves by giving them just enough rope.
