Our votes can’t do their job if the senate republicans do not make the Dems filibuster for real at a minimum. The legislative branch needs to be on record consistently for our system to work. I’m reminded of a story recounted by Tip O’Neill (I thoroughly despise democrats, but, dang it, O’Neill was one of the best storytellers out there, along with Sam Ervin) about a conversation between either himself or another congressman and Deng Xiaoping. Xiaoping was apparently surprised to learn that the President of the United States has to go to Congress to get money, budgets, etc. To me, this story illustrates the biggest problem with our system of government. If a President is encumbered by a glorified committee, he cannot lead. Giving the power to the legislative branch was a foolish decision by our Founders.
I’ve often said that our Founders, in their haste to not make a king, gave all the power to the real enemy in the American War for Independence, Parliament. Oh, to be sure, George III could influence policy, people, etc. The real power, though, was all the British Parliament.
I seldom criticize the founders and believe they created an almost perfect system. They just don’t seem to have been able to imagine that in 250 years all 100 senators could be corrupted by money and power.
One of the key safeguards prior to the 17th Amendment was that State legislatures could and would exercise oversight over the Senators representing the interests of their State as they were the ones that sent them to DC in the first place.
Seldom would many Senators have served for multiple terms prior to 1913. State legislators are much more exposed to their constituency unlike how Senators are sequestered further away in DC from more direct methods of accountability.
I have been screaming for years about repealing the 17th Amendment. The 17th was perhaps the most destructive amendment to our Constitution.
