I called John Thune’s office and got a recording asking me to leave a detailed message with my name, phone number, and other information. I told him that I also graduated from Biola College, as he did, and as his brother Bob did, and that I coached his brother Bob. I went on to say that since the House has already passed the SAVE Act, my understanding is that it only needs a simple majority of 51 votes in the Senate to pass. I urged him to go ahead and bring it to a vote.
I also mentioned that since both John and I graduated from Biola, perhaps he would move forward and help get the SAVE Act passed. (That was just a joke)
Then let them go on record voting against it.
Let them know in response to their solicitations for votes or funding:
“the votes aren’t there” and
“the donations aren’t there”
for their re-election.

As the Republicans have the majority, the deficiency is on the Republican side. As much as I’m suspicious of this whole issue, and Thune specifically, he seems earnest. I believe him that he doesn’t even have 50 votes for it. Trust but verify though, I want the senate on record, so we can see the 2-6 republicans who are against this procedure. If that’s even what’s needed? I believe I read they need 50 votes to open the debate, with the rule that filibusters must be real, before the cloture. No more assumed, or quiet filibusters. I believe Uncle Fetterman would vote for the save act, but I don’t think he would vote to eliminate the current filibuster rules, and force senators to speak for hours. If anybody has better information, I’d love to learn the truth/facts.
Oh he’s dead earnest about not having the votes to force the procedural change, that is a given. But don’t for a moment think that that means Thune wants a talking filibuster of the SAVE America Act – he does not.

SAVE ACT: Senator Kennedy has proposed the conference attempt to pass the Save America Act through reconciliation. In response Leader Thune told him that it would never survive a “birdbath under the Budget Control Act.” What Thune is saying is that the various committees (including Senator McConnell’s committee) would have to be on board – McConnell would never cooperate. The parliamentarian has already shown an appetite for blocking the president’s agenda and I see no reason to think that has changed. In this case, I think Thune is right.
The only real paths forward are to 1. allow the Democrats to stage a talking filibuster and break it (very possible) or 2. change the cloture rules to allow passage. It is simple. If you don’t want to do the hard work entailed by a talking filibuster (and no sitting Senator has ever experienced one) but you still want to pass the bill you can simply change the rules as they have multiple times in the past when it comes to cloture and the filibuster.

If Trump is truly serious about not signing any more legislation until the SAVE Act hits his desk, he should be in fairly good shape tactically to endorse Paxton and go scorched earth.
Trump could hold the bill for the full ten days before returning it to Congress with his objections. After that, Congress would need to vote again to pass the bill over Trump’s veto. With the narrow margins in both houses, Congress may not be able to pass those bills a second time.

In regards to the TV news zombies, the best one can do is try to ask them questions that are meant to make them think critically about the ooze they’ve ingested. Not often, but occasionally it does work. Have periodic lunches with a coworker who tends to lean liberal (not left), whom have had some success with over an extended period of time. They will now at least ponder alternative possibilities and look at the center of the onion when it’s exposed.
