Folks, I know this is going to be hard, but we must remain steadfast in bearing the burden of new tariffs for our essential items. Hermes has announced they will pass along the cost of President Trump’s tariffs to consumers.
Currently, Hermes branded purses ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 are purchased by a whopping 0.001% of Americans, yet 90% of wives for Wall Street hedge fund managers have them.
Yes, this is going to be a painful price increase; however, it is our patriotic duty to withstand it. We can survive it.
NEW YORK – […] The Paris-based company — which manufactures the vast majority of its goods in France — will raise prices enough to offset any hit to growth from the current 10% tariff on the European Union, according to Eric du Halgouet, Hermes’ executive vice president of finance.
If Hermes adds the 10% tax, US shoppers could pay an additional $2,000 on a lower-cost model, or an extra $20,000 on a $200,000 handbag. (read more)
If you have any tips or advice on how to deal with increased emotional anxiety as a result of this horrific announcement, please provide your words of wisdom in the comments section. If we lean on each other for support, we can get through this.
“Reciprocity! The nerve of that man.”

LMAO
Why so much in the first place?
It’s what the traffic will bear. Purchasers are paying for the name. OTOH, I have trouble convincing myself to pay $20 for a hand bag at Wal Mart.
I have purchased for about $2.00 each, Vuitton/ Hermes scarves, in perfect condition, at the Salvation Army or Goodwill Thrift Stores in recent years. Scarves are not purses, obviously, and they aren’t worn out like purses can be, but they are beautiful artifacts in any case!
Same experience of finding Hermes+ items – I live within a stone’s throw of Scottsdale AZ – lots of $$$ high-value neighborhoods/ Mayo Clinic/ The MIM, etc…. every luxury brand store operates there; crawling with “famous” people living ‘under the radar’.
using this criteria, the one Hermes scarf I have is, I believe, a pirated design, counterfeited… this vid’s focus is on men’s ties but much of this info is consistent throughout Hermes’ methods ( as re: their packaging, details, etc.)
{
}
… and this one is about identifying authentic vs fake scarves specifically… less general info than the vid above; both useful for thrifting authentic Hermes & Vintage Hermes 2nd-hand/cast-offs, both online & in the wild…
{ https://realstyle.therealreal.com/hermes-scarf-silk-motif-real-authentic-heritage/ }
Say any negative things about them you will, Hermes’ attention to quality & exquisite detail is an *extremely high standard imperative* of the house (not so with every luxury brand’s production)… which I value infinitely more than the “brand name/status”.
I learned young to sew couture/ bespoke methods, techniques, & details into my own handmade things, and found so much to love & appreciate about the process AND results of the details of “high quality”.
In example I learned to sew an invisible hand-rolled hem – standard on every Hermes scarf/pocket square etc. – in my first ever 4-H assignment in early grade school; the assignment was a (short/basic) list of objectives to accomplish, consisting of correctness & quality techniques. I’ve always loved the challenge for some reason… Truth in correctness maybe is the appeal for me.
Not everyone cares about that, for sure; schools stopped teaching such things long ago as part of the deliberate dumbing down of America.
The plutocrats & oligarchs – & their handsomely paid minions – typically get tired of their consumable luxury goods after less than even a few uses… they often donate them to ‘the peasants’ (same as throwing them away I’ve learned), and they simply buy more/newer for themselves, over & over. ((Their garage & estate sales are interesting & fun too.))
It’s the hallmark of the cycle of (shopping) addiction playing out.
This page is much better for enumerating Hermes scarf authentication points – I just found this one now, didn’t ave it before… supersede the above with this one as this is more thorough & concise…

FWIW
It is an art. The finest material, hand crafted. Like an equisit motor car. Hermès is known for their leather work. They were the premier saddle maker in the day, when the horse was the most. They rolled with the times. When the motor car became the new it thing, they transitioned well. Never stopped being a saddle shop, just expanded. Their ties are great, as most everything they make.
Until recently they had been family owned for their entire existence. They wanted to remain that way. Bernard used a family fued to his advantage and through shell corporations, got his hands on controlling interest. Family parlay was violated. Knock down drag out ensued. Sad really.
Bernard is the richest man in France and some say the world, even though his portfolio is luxury brand heavy. His game of thrones is far more interesting than Rupert’s. Bernard has three children and they are all competing to be heir apparent, to his LVMH emprie. All of his companies at least produce something and keep trades alive. Even if it is non essential goods. LVMH also ownes Tiffany & Co., he saved her from an uncertain fate. Prior to Bernard’s ownership the president bought Tiffany’s airspace back in the 80’s to build Trump Tower. It kept Tiffany afloat back then.
While companies like Tiffany and Hermès still maintain their level of wonderful workmanship, they have to produce other price points far more reasonable than 55g bags to keep the lights on. It is the volumn of the lower price point items, that allow her to pay the tradesmen who need weeks to make one handbag.
Same with your other designers. Calvin Klien has his underware licensing agreement that offset the rest of his operation. Ralph Lauren, his Polo. Everything else those guys do, is a losing proposition. Ralph Lauren loses 300m a year on his Madison Ave Flagship store along. The sell of Polo offsets that, so Ralph can present the ultimate WASP lifestyle brand, even though he is a nice jewish boy from Brooklyn.
What is the old say, money doesn’t always buy taste or common sense. If I thought I could conjur up some BS like this and laugh all the way to the bank, I would. A more honest living than most in D.C.
from 5 months ago…
IDK how accurate this is – always take CNBC’s presentation with a truckload of salt – sounds at least plausible though…
the family still owns less than 2% of the Hermes company, but apparently the usurper is out now;
In my mind, they can claw it back like Harley Davidson did – they got out from under AMF ownership.
Integrity – is why Hermes always lands on its feet when the other luxury brands rise & then fall;
though recently a big ugly accusation/ lawsuit (from butthurt American/globullists(?); same ones livid with jealousy of Trump’s success???) is happening re: Hermes’ “business model”
{
}
elsewhere in this thread I posted a ’60minutes’ segment on Hermes… family member & CEO gives clarity & context for the information in this one.
I don’t doubt Melania has at least one Hermes bag – probably one or few in each style; POTUSlikely has a few Hermes neckties as well.
Second thought – it makes more sense that it’s this is the gang of thugs suing Hermes over the ‘get-in-queue-for-it’ business model… much more sense…
{ These wealthy billionaires’ wives ruined California… }
the lawsuit originates in CA
I personally carry all I need in my pockets. I don’t need a feckin’ handbag to schlepp around, but I see it as anyone paying as much for a handbag as a new car costs, as being insane and having the intelligence of a vacuum on a good day.
Even if I owned multiple Hermes and other designer products, not admitting to anything…. they stay in my closet. I would never step outside wearing or carrying anything of that value…Simply an invitation for a criminal to rip it off my person!!!!!!
Instead, I carefully dress up in my old threadbare barn clothes and smelly shoes, my “bag” is simply an old plastic grocery carry out bag…Any jewelry consists of just a plastic band on my finger, a bobby pin to hold back my greying hair…a piece of baling twine to hold up my sloppy oversized pants.
Ladies!!!!! Why would you ever spend money to just attract a criminal….Be smart!!!! Save up the bucks to pay your next tax bill!!!! This post is a message from a “wise older lady”!!!!!
Oh man! I was going to buy one for my wife’s birthday in June, but that extra 5k is just too, too much. /s
If they are willing t9 drop $50,000 bucks for a handbag the extra $5,000 isn’t going to break the bank. And $200,000? Makes my eyes bleed
I paid significantly less than $200k for my first house. It is nearly as bad as paying $100k per year at one of the poison Ivy League schools where the student/administrator ratio is less than 2:1. What is it again you are paying for?
In the words of Col. Kurtz, “The horror. The Horror!”
Oh! The HUMANITY!
Well, back to folding my socks……
I would happily pay $5k on top if it would make my wife shut up for a month. Who wouldn’t? Spoiler alert—it will not shut her up for more than a day. Two if I am lucky. And I love my wife. But women are not great at honoring agreements. Kidding… Or am I?
On a serious note, while I agree with Sundance–Hermès handbags may not be a primary concern–there are tons of priority items being produced overseas, including, but not limited to, foods, chips, critical equipment, medications, and medical devices. The deindustrialization was intentional and went on for decades. It is bad. We will feel the pain, and some of us more than others.
Telling a poor man that money is not everything is like telling a homeless man that housing is not everything, or a sick man that health is not everything. Sure, you may be technically correct, but dismissing someone’s focal point of struggle as irrelevant or exaggerated is socially pretty darn stupid.
So yes, I understand why the tariffs were enacted overnight–it is tactics. But acting like the effect is going to be a walk in the park is just as dumb.
A Hermes handbag?
I refused to pay the price for curtain rods at Walmart just now !!
(consider this an on the ground report and a warning!)
We helped out a friend past the age of being safe up on a ladder with hanging some new drapes.
He did the ladder and the hole drilling and I supervised on arranging the drapery pleats just right.
She got the double curtain rod at Walmart, they were $25 each- which I thought was crazy money since I remember when they were less than half this amount, but welcome to the world of inflation and screwing us over. This was about three weeks ago this all went on.
SO then, I decided I wanted to hang some curtains now at my house.
I went back to Walmart to get what she just got, BUT they were sold out..
I’ve been waiting for them to restock all this time, but it’s also nearing the summer season, I figured they were changing into the latest of whatever is going on with curtain rod styles–things taking a while to restock is pretty normal now.
SO today I see they are back in stock, the same old ones that were just $25 and guess what they were: $32.52 !!!
It’s clear to see that the Trump tariffs have kicked in bigtime over at the ChinaMart so think about what you need FAST and get it done because sheesh, a $7.52 increase just on one set of curtain rods? and I needed two, so three weeks ago this project was $50 bucks and today it’s $65.04.
I am clearly moving onto Plan B as far as the curtain project..
I am so sick and tired of this lower standard of living we’ve been plunged into..
I’m getting older now and I never dreamed that after a lifetime of working, we’d somehow wind up being in a worse spot then when we all started out.
I never got pissed off at the price of curtain rods before in my life !!
Seriously, get what you need fast.
I wonder how much of that increase was tariffs and how much was WM slipping in a bit of ‘greed’ increase as well.
I don’t know but my mind was blown.
I knew we’d get hit with these tariffs, but if we see price increases that high on MANY things we need to buy, we’re really going to be in trouble.
I mean people are broke, how can we deal with this.
I just heard today that car payment delinquencies and repossessions are through the roof and rising.
Yes, people are broke.
The Biden administration hit the gas pedal on all of the mechanisms to finish us off…economically. Many economists worth their salt have been forcasting a natural down turn….staglation….at least a year ago….the result of kicking the can down the road in 2008/9……expectations that a black swan could cause it.
As I understand it, Trump is trying to precede a downturn by Doge and all the other cuts + tariff negotiations. He has also told us that there will be bumps.
We’ve been through this before and will come out just fine. IMO, if the Biden Administration hadn’t hit the gas pedal, we would not be in such dire straits now.
Do you know how many payments have to be missed BEFORE the banks repossess? I can promise you its not two weeks. The “Trump” tariffs went into effect April 2nd. If a car is getting repossessed April 17th the payments did not stop April 2nd.
Check on Amazon… they have double curtain rods as low as $17.
My advice? Buy Nothing!
Filed under the “who gives a –__&&???”
Precisely what my wife said when I rushed into the house with the breaking news….
You have a good and sensible wife.
The best solution for us and I know that many of you are in the same boat, its to cut our 5 day summer trip to see the accountant in the Caymans by 12 hours. At the daily rate this will enable the increased $10,000 to be paid without hiccup.
Toodle Pip.
😭🤣🤣😅😉🤣😓😢
20K for a hand bag???
WTF
Do you get all the beef for the freezer too?
And a Harley Davidson Electraglide, a helmet and a full tank o’gas.
With a sidecar…
There are multiple online 2nd-hand shops that re-sell people’s ‘gently-used’ Hermes (luxury brands) items… I enjoy mocking the notion of people who spend $$$ on these high-priced Hermes trinkets too!
PoshMark/The RealReal/Sotheby’s Auction House/Fashionphile/Vestiaire/ ETC….
a longer list

I bought Hunter wellies years ago from The RealReal for myself (Betsy knows wellies) – it’s the only one purchase I’ve ever made from any of these that I’ve looked through. *Love the wellies* I could not be happier; to get them – in perfect condition – for less than half of the new price incl. shipping (within CONUS) made my day. This year, I found another pair – identical except for color, in fairly good/acceptable condition – in a local thrift shop & paid $12 – *way* less than 10% of (pre-tariff) new price. Also made my day.
Now I have a work pair & a dress pair HA!hahahah.
I am however seeking everywhere for a pair of Doc Martens (boot style) for my GrandGirl – indestructible hand-me-downs. We got a pair from a cousin previously… and passed them along again to a younger – *in perfect condition* simply replaced the laces with new ones – when she outgrew them.
It’s the one brand-name I’ve found that is worth having for a child, but… the caveat is…
new they are eye-wateringly pricey and sadly they are imported/ made in England – as are my wellies (UK/Scotland) :- P
The knock-offs are total sh!t, and crap shoes actually cause children to have foot problems, both short AND long-term.
Good food & good shoes both really matter a lot for children.
There are American made boots that seem excellent, and which I have no experience with – this site is a directory of American made in almost every category of everything – just FYI
{ https://madeintheusamatters.com/american-made-products/made-in-the-usa-clothing-shoes-accessories/ }
There are people with more money than they know what to do with, and they will continue reveling in the madness of their addiction to “lifestyle” & “luxury goods”… regardless of the actual quality or the brands’ abusive/destructive supply chains.
‘Twas ever thus.
That said – with all mockery aside – There IS something to love about Hermes.
Hermes does have high standards, respect for skilled engineers/designers/Artisans, and a dedication to expertise… that are extreme in every sense – which explains some of the expense/what people pay so handsomely for.

I found a scarf ($2) in a thrift shop marked Hermes, I believe it to be a knock-off; an example of pirated design.
The design, however, I believe to be integral – an actual Hermes design.
When I tie it around my neck, the seeker with a telescope (one resides in each corner of the scarf), ends up looking directly at the cherubs that reside in the Heavens at the center of the scarf.
Figure out that picture-on-a-flat-plane-coming-together in 3-D – that’s exquisite design.
That is a fascinating video.
“this site is a directory of American made in almost every category of everything – just FYI”
That is awesome!
THANK YOU😃
You’re welcome – thank you for noticing.
How much for a Fanny Pak???
—asking for a friend—
I wonder if they make holsters. I bet my Sig Sauer M-18 would look good in one.
But wait. There’s more
Everyone lusts for the overpriced McKenzie-children’s checks…
Remember when the donated and supported BLM, ($millions???)
And blm went and blew it on houses for the execs!
Now thats funny!
McKenzie Childs… since my initials are AG, I *have to have* the Sterling Check things – it’s *scientific* – the Periodic Table demands it. HA!

Remember… the checkerboard is Masonic symbolism.
Hermes won’t lose in their obscene profits from Tariffs. The handbag probably cost no more then $300 to manufacture in some Chinese slave sweat shop.
I had to lay down with a cold coors lite on my forehead. The humanity!
On TikTok , Chinese social media types are showing videos of how luxury brand items are actually made in China inexpensively but sold expensive. Reminds me of how these same morons would dine in upscale restaurants in Manhattan and pay a fortune for their meals meanwhile the entire kitchen is staffed with Jose, Julio, and Paco from Mexico.
Here is a playlist of 15 videos of Hermes featuring (some of?) their international artists… I posted a Japanese silk printing of scarves vid in a comment previously… 14 more from Hermes here –
{

It’s correct that luxury & lifestyle brands do have much or most of their items produced in chinese factories… and the chinese pirate their designs too.
The pirated designs from Hermes are in fact produced in the manner you describe – but not their authentic items… there are multiple HofH/French Atelier videos on YT… just one here apparently made 4 months ago

chinese ripping off intellectual property from countries worldwide, not just America, is what POTUS is bringing Sunlight to.

Ooh! Ooh! Sundance .. I know, I know
Just don’t buy a Hermes bag??
What a wonderful day! Chopped some wood, cleaned the flu, dropped off trash at the landfill, donated some books at the library, considered comments on Kudlow, refilled the birdfeeders, then sat down to read CTH comments. Never once thought I needed to buy something.
I used to live in Victor, ID. I know the feeling.
Sundance, if you keep going like this you’re going to need surgery to remove your tongue from being so firmly planted inside your cheek.
But don’t stop on my account because I’m lovin’ it.
Kudos, friend.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is an absolute constitutional crisis!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh my, guess i will just have to buy one now instead of two.
If you’re a fan of the high end clutch, I understand that an emotional support group has been started on Reddit to deal with the devastating news, with satellite groups available on ivy league campuses.
New members are advised to bring their own blankets and lattes.

Lattes, what do you mean lattes? Wine, ba-bee. Lots and lots of California wine.
“I complained because I had no shoes, then I met a man who had no feet”.
Oh well, it would have looked great with my new Wal Mart outfit.
Got an almost new leather purse at a consignment shop 4 or 5 years ago. Don’t need another one yet.
I better run out and stock up now!!!
That is hilarious.
I’m sure there is a protest for that.
D*mn!
I was planning on giving 3 as Birthday gifts this year.
Well, I suppose there are plenty of other wonderful things to spend 50K on. The recipients should be pleased with their new gifts, regardless.
noooooooooooooooo.
OK HER(p)ME$ …. u do u
Sarcasm noted. First I ever heard of a Hermes purse, I must be under privileged.
That purse has got to be amazing.
My wife can run a beauty parlor, a sewing factory, a pharmacy, a hospital and a mechanic shop out of a thirty-dollar purse.
There is no telling what she could do with a $2000,000 purse.
“If Hermes adds the 10% tax, US shoppers could pay an additional $2,000 on a lower-cost model, or an extra $20,000 on a $200,000 handbag.”
Oh Lordy… The humanity!
The wife and I were talking today about 1st world absurdities and I mentioned how appropriate it would be should someone create an emoji – for the segment of society who speaks enoji – image of a big, rotund bohonk signifying an invitation to kiss said bohonk.
This seem to me to be an appropriate punctuation mark for this moment in time since so many 1st world pretenders have no real grasp of meaning of life, the universe, or anything…
beltways probably flipping out more about the going rate on underage sex slaves
Oh, dear. Gonna see lots of pursed lips.
Well darn, now instead of two bags I can only afford one! Joy killers.
Beware of cheap knockoffs! The Hermes brand name is spelled with an m, not a p.
I wonder if these kind of people freak out if their $200,000 bag got soiled. It is a really dirty world out there. I mean I can leave in my closet at home along with the Ferrari. I mean a paint chip on the hood would be sacrilegious!!
I am torn between this song or this verse from the Apostle Paul.

The luxury market has been on a downturn for at least a year. It’s always the first to go, right?
Sarcasm at its finest!
Welp, there’s goes my wife’s birthday present.
You see I have a problem with this.
If a Hermes bag retails for $50,000 the 25% tariff does not translate to the bag now costing $55,000.
That BS and down right enabling of retail theft.
The fact is no retailer is paying $50,000 for the bag, likely 12,500. The difference is the markup. The tariff is paid on what the wholesaler pays to import not on what they retail it for.
Same can be said of the any one of thousands items on the shelf with made in China label.
For argument sake, my estimate of retail markup is 5 to 1.
For every $0.20 paid to import something the item sells for a dollar.
So an item that retails for a dollar a 25% tariff translate in an honest world as now retailing for a $1.05 not $1.25
Hell I will gladly import something for 1.00 and turn around and retail it for $5.00 seven days a week and twice on Sunday.
And given the shear amount of pushovers consuming cheap retail imports with zero understanding of economics they will line up under the emotional knowledge of 25% tariffs take it on the chin that product bought last week for $5.00 now is going to cost $6.25.
The big box stores filled to roof with cheap imports are only salivating for tariffs to kick in. Easy money to be made on consumer gullibility.
One group that will not be affected by this price increase will be the smash and grab thieves. Merchandise is free for them regardless of what’s on the price tag.
What a feast for sarcasm!
I am boycotting Hermes and protesting as well!
I will be wearing my vintage, culturally appropriate, non binary “GUESS” fanny pack this season.
I’m gonna “sport” my walkman too!
Yah, Baby she’s got it!
Oh! The horror!
Seriously, what’s another 5 large? /s
The wiff will just have to do without.
I never even heard of them…
But,
That’s not saying much…
Considering the source.
