Within the recent interview between President Trump’s emissary Steve Witkoff and Tucker Carlson, there was a very weird segment where Ambassador Witkoff was heaping praise upon the Qatari government. [SEE HERE] Carlson sat there nodding and affirming his support for Witkoff’s opinion of Qatar. It was really bizarre. {GO DEEP}
That segment of the interview was bizarre because there is zero doubt that Qatar is a bad actor in all things related to the middle east and U.S. domestic policy outcomes. For Ambassador Witkoff to be that wrong about such a big item puts a question mark behind his judgement and the influences on his opinions toward the relationships in the middle east.
Qatar is bad news. President Trump has previously, correctly, called out the nation of Qatar for being the center of support for radical extremism throughout the region. Qatar is also connected at the hip to the CIA.
Qatar funded and supported the original “Arab spring,” more accurately known as the Islamist Spring. Qatar is the banker for the Muslim Brotherhood. The Qatari government fund Al Jazerra. When the Arab extremists were exiled from Egypt the leaders fled to Qatar. The leaders of Hamas also live in Qatar.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) eventually had to confront Qatar with sanctions and ostracization due to the Qatari support for radical Islamic extremism. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain, all of which barely survived in the Arab Spring uprisings, all put pressure on Qatar to stop their support for radical Sunni extremists.
Qatar is a supporter for Hamas, and Qatar is in cooperative alignment with the Iranian influence in the region. When Biden released the $6 billion for Iran, it was deposited in a Qatari bank. When the 5 Muslim Brotherhood leaders were released from Gitmo, exchanged for Bowe Bergdahl, they went to Qatar. When Hillary Clinton and Leon Panetta sent surface to air missiles into Libya, Qatar organized the transfer.
Within the USA Qatar funds the same groups the USAID (technically the CIA) funds that stir up trouble domestically. Those groups include The Brookings Institute, who in turn fund Lawfare, specifically the efforts of Mary McCord, Andrew Weissmann and Norm Eisen. Qatar spends money on issues in/around the USA that are against the interests of our country and President Trump specifically.
All of this activity is well documented, none of this is supposition. So, when Steve Witkoff sings the praises of Qatar, it really calls his financial relationships with the Qataris into question {SEE HERE}.
Again, remember, the Hamas leaders live a life of affluence and influence from their homes and safe harbor in Qatar.

If Steve Witkoff is listening to Qatar and shaping his opinions and perspectives as an outcome of those discussions with the Qatari government, it makes sense Witkoff would be “duped” by Hamas. Ultimately, he would be getting duped by Qatar.
Lastly, Witkoff cannot be that gullible not to know that listening to Qatar, advocating for the positions espoused by the Qataris, would put Witkoff on the opposite side of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the voices of Arab leaders who have been dealing with the mess the Qataris always end up creating.
The Muslim Brotherhood as a political arm of the extremists in the region, could not exist without the support of Qatar. Heck, Hamas itself could not exist without support from Qatar.
This is not to say that Witkoff cannot be effective within the ongoing negotiations around the issue, he certainly can. However, he would need to reorient his thinking toward Qatar and based on the Tucker Carlson interview, that type of self-reflection does not appear present.
I hate to call the baby ugly, but being this wrong on a BIG ISSUE ITEM is either a major blind spot for Witkoff or something else entirely. I have spent the past 36 hours trying to figure out how Witkoff could hold these opinions, and the only thing that makes sense is that Witkoff has some kind of financial relationship with the government of Qatar.
Qatar is in a strong relationship with the CIA.

The thing that struck me in the Witkoff/Carlson conversation was Witkoff’s discipline in executing what Trump wants. I can imagine serving my best friend, like Witkoff is. It is a beautiful and extremely effective thing.
I was also struck by Witkoff’s emphatic need to understand the players and to understand what they are working towards. I found the interview incredibly hopeful, that they really could unravel the ball of yarn.
Finally, Witkoff made reference to the fact that Qatar has a new leader. Everything that Sundance (rightfully) lays out came under “the old boss.” Tucker Carlson himself recently flew to Qatar for an extensive conversation with the new emir. Now, either this guy can mislead Carlson, Witkoff, and by extension Trump (who is also a good friend with Carlson, and probably had an unofficial message carried by Carlson). Or, all of the commentators here are on the wrong trail.

Witkoff has freed many hostages from all over the world, including from Hamas. I am not sure why he is being singled out. He has actually done a masterful job. I am sure he had a healthy skepticism of Qatar and Hamas releasing all the hostages and keeping the ceasefire, but he cannot force terrorists to keep to an agreement. He did what he could and now Israel, with U.S. help, will finish the job. Witkoff also brokered a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia in less than 100 days. Again, I don’t see an issue with Witkoff.

I have much respect for your work and learn a lot. This is just my observation. Frankly, I don’t see why Witkoff’s duped statement matters in the grand scheme of things. Witkoff managed to free many hostages from Hamas and from all over the world, including Russia. He negotiated a ceasefire with Ukraine and Russia in less than 100 days. He has a stellar record so far and has been working tirelessly for the Trump administration. I don’t think Israel, Hamas and Qatar are going back to the negotiating table, so Witkoff likely won’t be needed for future negotiations. Israel will soon occupy all of Gaza and Hamas won’t be there. What they do with the land long term, I have no idea. Witkoff’s duped statement may simply come from the fact that he is a little green at dealing with terrorists.

I watched the interview yesterday and wrote an update on the open thread. My conclusions were virtually identical to yours without ever seeing yours. His repeated admiration to the Qataris stood up and questioned his integrity and ability to broker a solution. As an Israeli I consider that us agreeing to have Qatar as a mediator and Egypt too was very stupid to say the least. Egypt too have cross purposes on the matter. Shalom.
Netanyahu should have released the Palestinian hostages as part of the last hostage swap. I know he was mad at the way Hamas paraded the Israelis last time, but that was a bad move. The swaps were happening, and I feel more Israeli hostages would have been saved.

The Phase one of this deal was complete. Phase two is discussing the end of war in which Israel demanding Hamas to be either disarmed or out of there. This is never going to happen. During the discussion released with Tucker Carlson, Witkoff declared that the option of giving Ukraine “Article 5 protection”, without joining NATO, was “open for discussion”.

This means essentially that the United States will be Ukraine’s ‘protector’ as America is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. If Ukraine is ever attacked, the U.S. would have to respond.
This is news to many, and makes no sense.
The entire point of the Trump presidency is to rid America of the forever wars; signing up to be Ukraine’s ‘protector’ in any future fight is a dangerous avenue to go down and should be rejected.
Earlier in the discussion, Witkoff had said, “Even though we have to get a fair deal for Ukraine, we cannot allow that country to drag us into World War III.”
But, that is exactly what will happen if Ukraine is given blanket protection by the United States.

The hostage swap was going very well until Netanyahu reneged on the deal. Netanyahu should have released the Palestinians as part of the last hostage swap and kept to the agreement. I know he was mad at the way Hamas paraded and humiliated the Israelis last time, but the hostages were alive and that is all that mattered. If Netanyahu kept to the agreement, I feel more Israelis would have been saved.

He seems to be making the rounds of the podcasts, the broadcast networks, the cable shows, the stand-up press gaggle outside the White House etc. All these administration people who keep trying to get their own faces on camera. It needs to stop. Trump already has a designated press secretary, he has a VP who is a very capable communicator and of course Trump himself is the master communicator. Witkoff, Bondi and others need to stop trying to grab limelight.
I agree. The interview was bizarre. Not only the Qatar stuff, but also talking about how Syria’s Julani was potentially a truly changed guy (was this taped before the recent massacres of religious minorities?) and Tucker talking about how Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is “a good guy”. Maybe I was really really tired and need to listen again, but it seemed nuts. Also seemed like Witkoff doesn’t get the world-domination aspect of Islam (which is not a radical variant; it’s baked into the foundational documents), and Tucker doesn’t, either.

Money does in fact make the world go ‘round.
Mr Witkoff is a businessman not a politician. That means he will not jeopardize his business relations and network.
There’s a difference between making lucrative business deals or receiving bribes or kickbacks to act in a certain way but the end result is the same.
Even though he has temporarily put his personal business affairs in the care of others, he still understands where his connections lie when he is out of the administration.

I struggled to understand Witkoff’s statement during the Trump transition “cease fire” talks, that Qatar was doing “God’s work.” (Can you believe that one?)
This is what I came up with as a possible way to view this:: Trump believes in not alienating our enemies completely. I think it’s part of the Art of the Deal that Trump attempts to learn as much as he can through a relationship with either an ally or enemy. This allows him better decision making. You can learn much more from someone if you don’t first alienate them. I know with Kim Jong Il, Trump started out speaking publicly in an aggressive way towards him, but then shifted to being open to him. He has been open to Putin and others and frequently says it’s good to have good relationships with rivals. So I think Trump’s initial stance vis a vis Qatar has been to start with openness.
Thus Witkoff’s public friendliness with Qatar as the beginning of Trump’s negotiating position, and alas, also with Hamas on the part of Witkoff.
Once Trump/Witkoff saw that negotiation is not possible, Witkoff is free to publicly call a spade a spade.
It’s a little risky, because a lot of people are frightened that Witkoff, who appears to be friendly towards mass murderers, are going to think Trump is a fool for having appointed Witkoff.
But Trump is such a friend of Israel, I have learned not to worry about Witkoff in the long run. I do not think Witkoff is going to ultimately damage Israel’s chances of winning the war like the Biden regime worked on for 4 years.
As Sundance brilliantly discussed here, the idea of Trump having these envoys helps Trump workaround the CIA and IC and the silo system.
So as of now I am trying to keep an open mind on Witkoff and not paying a lot of attention to what he says. I am paying attention to actions. Trump has made possible for Israel to have what Israel needs to win the war against Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and ultimately Iran.
Incidentally there are tons of people online who believe Israel should not get any aid from the US. I am a strong supporter of Israel. Israel mostly BUYS weapons systems and what they need for their defense from Americans. But the US does provide aid for Israel in addition. I agree with those who say the US should not give money to Israel.
Israel would do much better to have no strings attached to the US, but to continue to be a strong ally of the US. Allowing aid from the US only means Israel is hamstrung in their defense of their tiny country whenever a President like Obama or Biden come along.
Some of the military contracts are multi-year, so they cannot be cancelled quickly, if this is what Israel decides to do. They require Israel to purchase only from the US. The amount of aid given to Israel is tiny compared to Israel’s economy. Israel will do fine without US aid. But Israel should be free to either manufacture some military equipment or purchase systems elsewhere if necessary at a time when a Biden will come along and condition every single piece of equipment on Israel losing the war they happen to be fighting at the time.
Another point is the war in the Middle East has been created by the CIA. Hamas was created by Bush Sr. The US has supported Iran at Israel’s expense since 1979. Reagan gave the Mullahs in Iran billions in weapons. (Remember Iran-Contra?) The war has continued because war is profitable. That is why the CIA has protected and empowered Iran since 1979. Israel has been forced to figure out how to defend herself against many enemies, but Israel did not start any of the wars in the Middle East. The responsibility for that lies squarely on the US CIA and affiliated NGOs.
Where Trump is Tier 1, the highest level, I think Witkoff is like Tier 10.
The equivalent of a company’s first line of defense if you’re calling their customer service. Someone who will keep you on the line, but is clueless and lacks the ability to work out your issue, while being recorded, seemingly for ‘training purposes,’ before escalating you up in the company to someone who actually has the experience and ability to get something done.
Trump is basically putting these bad leaders on hold, making them take a pause, while recording their shenanigans with someone they think is a ‘dufus’ they can ‘dupe’ and aren’t cautious with their gameplay.
Know thy enemy, know their tendencies and tricks, and expose them to the world. I think Trump’s plan is working perfectly.
