Canada is pretty easy to break— their household income is about 20% less than our and their home prices are about 30-40% more. So they are mostly poor and levered up compared to us. Their approach will only lead to a further weakening of the CAD (Canadian dollar) making everything they need to buy from us more expensive no matter what tariffs are. It’s not smart to cut us off from electricity because we will simply green light more US production that over the long-term will wean us off of what we willingly import.
Who are they going to sell electricity to if not the U.S.? Seems they are at the end of the grid and the U.S. can easily disconnect Canada.

Just remember Dekster, we Americans do not hate the Canadian citizens. At all. I have lived my entire life less than 10 miles from our mutual border and have been many many times over that border for some wonderful trips into your country. Always had a great time interacting with the people.
We used to lovingly call our Canadian friends “The real people.” and meant it sincerely. Caught some nice fish in the Kawartha Lakes region and drank many a Molson while doing it and eating them later in the day around a roaring campfire. So many great memories spending time in the eastern parts of your country!
The only time I have ever felt a bit of dislike directed at us as Americans in Canada was in Toronto. For e.g. Our car broke down as we were driving through the city one trip, on our way elsewhere, and let’s say there was a lack of helpful people around. We got it taken care of eventually but it was my first experience in feeling like the ‘ugly American.’

As I understand what Sec.Lutnick explained, Mexico and Canada received special treatment tariffs due to their borders with us and USMCA. There were specific actions that our govt. wanted and Mexico has acted, but Canada has been laissez faire., so our kind President gave Trudeau an extension to do something and show progress.
The global reciprocal tariffs apply to all nations who tariff the US and will start April 2nd.
The tit for tat will commence at that point, so right now they can assess what tariffs if any, they will impose on us.

I have been to Canada several times. My memories of those occasions are not pleasant.

The border guard was a jerk.

They are now claiming that only a “small” amount of the fentanyl in the US comes from Canada. No one ever asks them how many people one gram of fentanyl can kill.
What a bloviating drama queen, pouring it on to make sure the Canadian people will elect him and his party down the road. His comments make little sense really. Fomenting enmity with Americans is not in their best interest and he knows it.
Pres. Trump doesn’t want Canada and we can live without their resources. What Pres. Trump wants is the end to backdoor China deals allowing Chinese goods into the USA avoiding tariffs and the stop to Canadian made fentanyl from crossing the border and killing Americans.
Canadians can do whatever they want with their country. Knock yourselves out hating Americans and Trump. In the end you and we will see who is going to come out quite well. Canadians need to take the socialists/communists out of their govt. but that looks increasingly unlikely as their liberal leadership is making their citizens play right back into their hands by hyping this trade war in all the wrong ways and causing the wrong conclusions. Yes, the real issue is Canada selling their access to the US market to other countries. Several years ago, I believe Sundance wrote an article about this in the context of the auto market. It is also something Mexico does. I wish I could find that article. If anyone can post a link, I would be appreciative.

Trump is seen in Canada as a bonehead. His fifty-first state prattle has VERY QUICKLY become tiresome and, in fact, very disrespectful of a country which used to punch far above its weight. It’s been gutted by the liberallies, but, no small thanks to Trump, has been reawakened.

Secretary Ross worked with President, prior to his first election, knew him personally very well and did business with him, also.

Thanks for the perspective. It’s hard to fear a country that has purposely ceded freedoms for the climate-frauding, globalist, communists who now control your country. The Covid scam and the arresting of pastors, the squelching of opposition ideas, and seizing of bank accounts was allowed by the Canadian people not too long ago. My Canadian cousins come to Florida to own vacation homes and seek real medical care. Any trip to a border town like Niagara Falls or Detroit/Windsor Port Huron/Sarnia, etc. educates us on the Canadian mindset.
But doubling down on Carney isn’t going to change what’s wrong with Canada.
The population of Canada fits into California. Think about that from a scale standpoint and and economic GDP standpoint.
Be nationalistic, but leave the USA out of Canada’s foibles.
