Canadian here, so take my northern peso’s worth’s take on this accordingly.
I’m going to submit that Trump is not doing himself any favours with the on-again, off-again approach to these tariffs. It’s creating the impression that he’s not serious and/or that internal American pressures are causing him to waver, which is playing into Canadian leftist beliefs that all they have to do is exert enough targeted pressure and/or wait him out and this will all go away and Trump will wander off onto some other topic.
If he’s going to apply the tariffs, then apply them and stick to them and either (a) make clear what specific action(s) Canada needs to take to get them reduced/removed (knowing full well that Canadian leftists are fundamentally unserious people and highly unlikely to accede to any such requests anyway), or (b) make clear that there are no such actions and that the tariffs are specifically intended to drive business investment back into the USA as part of a realignment of USA economic policy and the consequences upon Canada are of little or no concern to Trump.
As it stands it looks like Trump is primarily just stirring up the Canadian political landscape and seeing what happens; this doesn’t lend itself to any kind of deal-making and will introduce some skittishness into would-be allies on either side of the 49th who might line up behind a well-defined approach. For instance, our Conservatives (I’m not great fans, but they’re kind of all we’ve got) are having a real hard time figuring out which way to go on this (e.g. are there really some actions we can take to get into better alignment with Trump’s policy directions, or are we facing Lucy holding the football?) and the Liberals are able to just wrap themselves in a flag, proclaim their Two Minutes Hate at Trump, and whip everyone up into an emotional frenzy.
I dunno. My country’s so full of coddled, unserious people & stupid leftists (but I repeat myself) that we may be beyond hope of saving ourselves as a sovereign state anyway. As someone I follow on X put it, if you guys ever came up to invade & annex us, I’ll hand your soldiers some cold brewskies and point the way to Ottawa for them.
The “on again off again” approach is in response to Canadian actions. You are not seeing the fact that the trade tariffs are reciprocal. Trump will drops tariffs in response to the same from Canada. The drug traffic tariffs will shift as Canada starts to take real action, not words, to stem the drugs. They could start by cracking down on Fentanyl labs and regulating truck licenses. The reduction in tariffs would be immediate.
And yet we have news reports of American officials talking to Canadian counterparts about kicking Canada out of NORAD, out of Five Eyes, and about tearing up / renegotiating treaties about the definition of the CAN/USA border and our joint control of the Great Lakes.
I’m sorry, but when it’s your officials who start throwing all those topics into the mix, you’re the ones muddying the waters (bad pun not intended) about what the real goal is. If it’s fentanyl, then fine, so be it. Canada is stupidly lax on this stuff, no argument! We’re not complete dumb-dumbs, we can connect the dots between “bad fentanyl enforcement” and “economic pain.” Control of the Great Lakes has virtually nothing to do with that, and when you throw that on the table along with border treaties, that leads us to speculate that all of this is a big show, that the real goal here is ultimately to seriously weaken Canada and overtly extend American control of the continent. Manifest Destiny, 21st century style.
And if that’s your real goal, and I’ve read compelling arguments that it is, look, be up front about it. Don’t hide it behind fentanyl, because then everyone up here will smell a rat and refuse to cooperate with you out of spite and that gets neither of us anywhere.

Yes, we were complacent too and fought our way through dark times to finally get a straight shooter of a President (twice). Our country and he have been through hell, but especially our president, who could not be bought or controlled. We have been fighting tooth and nail, so I don’t call that pathetic. What they did and are doing to this man is unforgivable and also goes against American patriots who voted for him, and others who cheered for him.
Our fight has been continuous for over 8 years, so perhaps now it’s your turn to throw off the pathetic leadership of your beloved country.
