The alarming provocations and escalations continue as the U.K. has pledged to send depleted uranium anti-tank rounds into Ukraine.
During a four-hour public meeting which included international press, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the NATO intent to use depleted uranium artillery and tank missiles against Russian forces would be met with countermeasures.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu noted the British decision leaves fewer and fewer steps before a potential “nuclear collision” between Russia and the West. “Another step has been taken, and there are fewer and fewer left,” he told reporters in remarks cited by domestic agencies.
(Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday condemned British plans to send tank ammunition that contains depleted uranium to Ukraine, saying Moscow would be forced to respond accordingly.
Speaking in London on Monday, Minister of State for Defence Annabel Goldie said some of the ammunition for the Challenger 2 battle tanks that Britain is sending to Ukraine includes armour piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium.
“If all this happens, Russian will have to respond accordingly, given that the West collectively is already beginning to use weapons with a nuclear component,” Putin said in remarks after a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He did not elaborate. (read more)
Keep in mind, all remarks by the heads of state during these sessions are known in advance by both nations. Chairman Xi knew what Vladimir Putin was going to say. Additionally, at the end of their three-day summit, Chairman Xi made comments that were strategically positioned publicly to be overheard by international media.
Chairman Xi is cunning panda and is very well skilled at making statements in front of media that drive his own interests. These comments are always strategically placed by Chairman Xi and his people who plan every possible angle in advancing their agenda.
These end of summit remarks were specifically made by Xi, knowing they would be picked up on microphones by media, interpreted and then broadcast.

There is a difference between depleted uranium rounds and a nuclear bomb. Depleted uranium is just a very high density metal that is used as an armor piercing or anti-tank round. It is not a “nuke,” doesn’t explode, and certainly does NOT justify ANY use of nuclear weapons, either big bombs are battlefield tactical nukes.

As one of the likely only commenters here who has tested positive for ingestion of DU, after VA testing, I wouldn’t take anything the VA says on the subject as accurate.
They claimed to follow “friendly fire” vets known to have been hit with DU very closely, but couldn’t even find all those vets after just 10 years when they went to study them further. I believe they claimed they were following like less than 75 veterans.
I was never included in their program, even after the test results proved the exposure.
I don’t disagree with trapper that it justifies using nukes, but it is harmful stuff for anyone coming into contact with it after it has hit an armored vehicle.
Army regulations required anyone exposed to 1/10th of a gram be medically tested for exposure. After 697,000 pounds were fired in the first Gulf War, that was ignored, first by the Army, then by the VA for many years.
Did you find it with a lung count or whole body count? Thirty five years at Hanford had annual body and lung counts. No internal contamination .but I had work partners that came up hot. Also had urine and poo tests.
The only offered test by the VA at the time was the 24 hour urine count.
I was told on the phone by the VA that it was higher than those in their DU program that they were following.
I had to get the results by submitting a FOIA request. I did receive them.
There has been no discussion from any VA doctor of those results to this day.
To make clear Blue Water Fox, the 24 hour urine count is typically only good within 30 days of initial exposure.
It was some time after I returned when the VA was finally forced to provide this test for me.
They refused other testing. They likely didn’t want it on record.

There was a fire there, and it burned for 3 days. They used contractors to clean up the mess, and gave them surgical masks to wear while doing so.

There was a good interview with Judge Napolitano and Col. Macgregor yesterday; in which these things were discussed. Apparently this type of munition has been in use for quite a while. The thing that makes them “good” in the Military’s view, is their extreme potency and incendiary effect on everything they come in contact with. In other words, when they hit a tank turret, not only does it penetrate the armor, but everything inside is ferociously burned up. Now the Colonel said, that he had personally handled these things many times, and there is no known risk of radiation contamination; and the larger number of “experts” concur; however there are still a few who disagree. He also said, that this was something the US developed, and as far as he knew, Russia doesn’t have such munitions: which may be the reason for their fear; because they don’t know what it is.

It has been used as munitions from about .50 caliber, all the way up to 155mm artillery rounds. The US government has been looking at DU (waste byproduct of uranium enrichment) since at least 1958 for various uses.
It has also been used as ballast in the tail section of some large military planes. I believe the C-141 if I recall correctly.
The US had 2.2 billion pounds of this waste material sitting at storage sites for years. Tank munitions were primarily made of Tungsten, which came from China.
Some genius decided why not use this waste byproduct to make ammunition.
DU rounds became very popular in the first Gulf War because of the lethality. It was also used as a 25mm round, and 30mm in the A-10 Warthog.
It is also used as armor in the Abrams tank.
It’s basically a sharpened rod that is fired from a tank. When it hits, it starts burning because it burns very easily when exposed to air. It essentially burns a hole through the armor, then spalls once it gets inside.
Since it burns so completely, it is the dust that is harmful after the fire is out. That dust is what can be ingested by anyone encountering the site.
DU is mainly a low level alpha radiation emitter which can be easily blocked, until it becomes dust and is ingested. The alpha radiation is much closer to cells then, and is what causes the damage.
There is enough history of its use to know what will happen when it is used.

In the Jefferson Proving Ground I mention in other comments, their recommendation was to remove the top 6 feet of soil over 80 acres. It was a range where DU munitions were test fired.
They recommended testing deer there for the presence of U-236. They were concerned with deer eating on the range, and ingesting particles. U-236 would prove ingesting DU since it only came from the enrichment process, and not from natural background radiation…which typical testing would only show.
As for your questions, I do not know, but I personally would never do either.

Any idea what US military inventory management has been for the last 2-3 decades for DU? I flew an aircraft that, at initial operational status, had DU in a specific wing location. That component was subsequently phased out about 10 years into the service life of the aircraft type.
Not sure what you are asking. I believe it was either the C-141 or the C-5 that had DU in the tail section as ballast.

Yep, even in low content form, it can affect tissues at the exposure rates soldiers can experience, even with the improved protective gear available today.
However, in general, war is a very toxic experience and faced with little of the protective gear we now wear in industry.
I happened to work in in industry before such gear and was exposed to a lot of nasty chemicals and asbestos. Some people are more susceptible to problems than others. Luckily I’ve remained healthy.

Apparently, about 10,000 Italian soldiers who served in the Middle East have filed claims for compensation for getting Leukemia after using the DU ammunition.

U238 gives off low levels of alpha radiation which can be very harmful when breathed or ingested.
You are correct, and testing for ingestion is very difficult, because it may not detect anything beyond background radiation.
That is why when Jefferson Proving Ground was being turned over to civilian use years ago, they tested deer for the presence of U-236.
They wanted to know if deer (hunting) might be getting exposed on the ranges there, and U-236 is only found after enrichment.
I was tested in a steel box with ten inch thick walls. steel came from a prewar battle ship to insure the steel has no fission products.
That was part of the problem with detecting DU exposure. What could be used to detect it that used pre-nuke testing steel.
It was such a shock to read much of the medical literature on testing for DU exposure, then find the report from the Jefferson Proving Ground where they were testing for U-236.

Uranium ore is U234, U235 and U238. When it is enriched, the waste from the enrichment process is depleted of the other isotopes, so what remains is mainly U-238.
U-238 is alpha radiation is easily blocked, until it gets inside the body and the alpha radiation is much closer to the cells.

I think that Tucker Carlson was purposely making that DeSantis statement look like RDS meant to seek peace, even though that is not what he said. I think Tucker Carlson’s emphasis was to try to push DeSantis a small bit into a more peaceful agenda. He actually said at one point, “Who knew? DeSantis is not a neocon.” He was wrong.
DeSantis sent Florida National Guard troops to Ukraine to train Ukrainian troops in 2021 and again in April, 2022, he sent them back again. I just remembered a five gallon bucket Uranium Tri oxide weighs about five hundred pounds.
The isotope used is non-fissile. The centrifuges in Iran that you hear so much about are designed to allow separation of fissile uranium so bombs can be made. U235 and U238 are separated. The non fissile is heavier than lead, so bullets made from it penetrate more deeply. Uranium simply makes a heavy bullet.
Uranium is not really good for the environment, and is a heavy metal. USA spayed tons of it around Iraq.
US uses electromagnets at Oak Ridge Lab to do the separation. Probably uses centrifuges now. Basically the slight difference in mass is used to separate 235 out.

I sat at a table in the Pentagon some years ago when the RAND corporation presented their DOD paid for report on DU use during the Gulf War.

Once Yeltsin came into power, NATO started expanding eastward. Putin has always made it clear that Ukraine joining NATO was a line in the sand. Unlike Obama, Putin is serious when he makes those claims.
There was no reason for NATO to persist after ~1992 once it was obvious the Soviet Union was done. If they had at least kept their original pledge, no war in Ukraine. Without Obama interfering in the 2014 Ukraine elections, no war in Crimea.
