Well, it looks like it’s official now. After several days of sporadic reporting on Russia’s decision to shut down the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline into western Europe, it looks like the valves have been shut down until EU sanctions against Russia are removed.
Strategically the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is the major gas supply route into Germany, Europe’s largest economy. As noted by Reuters, “European gas prices, as measured by the benchmark Dutch TTF October gas contract, rose by as much as 30% on Sept. 5, amid growing fears of a total shutdown of Russian pipeline imports ahead of the European winter.”
Europe was already going into a deep economic recession due to inflation created by pre-existing green energy policy. The Nord Stream shutdown will make things exponentially worse as energy prices skyrocket. The Russian owned energy company Gasprom sent out a video that can be best described as psychological warfare. WATCH:

If a high-speed turbine is running out of adequate lubrication, it could without warning become a bomb. Gazprom is not going to accept that risk – nor would any rational engineer. Shut the damned thing off and keep it off.
The only reason why maintenance parts are not immediately and timely available is the “sanctions” imposed by stupid political leaders who know nothing about infrastructure. But a multi-ton piece of metal rotating at probably thousands of RPM knows only about physics, and lubrication, not politics. Gazprom engineers do understand the technical risks (of pure disaster), and, wisely, they are not going to take them. Until the service parts arrive, are installed, and are fully tested, “you’re not going to get any more gas from this pipeline.” And Gasprom is not to blame.

Those turbines are aircraft powerplants…..and you do not take chances when they are bolted under a wing.
Why would you not take the same cautions with a land-based version? Catastrophic failure will produce the same (or worse, in the case of NS-1) results.

I have some personal experience with dark European winters. In 1972 my husband was in the Army and was stationed in Germany for his time of compulsory duty. Not sure how much I can say where or why he was there, but it was a very remote location. Wives were discouraged from coming over from US. I went anyway and found a house where I could live in a corner of an unfinished basement. There were 3 generations in this German household. Typically the German landlord would turn off the heat when he left for work and when he returned after dark, he would turn it back on. It was freezing outside. I eventually developed chillbains on my legs from repeated cold exposure. My hands and feet are still permanently very sensitive to cold temperatur. I always felt incredibly cold. I do not think Americans have any understanding of the misery of cold dark winters.
I endured until the following September and back to the USA I came. I have never taken for granted the luxury of a warm house in winter since that experience. Oh yeah, and so many other blessings of being and American living in this beautiful country. USA! USA!

Yes, many Americans are horribly naive about such things. The future in the United States looks to have some harsh realities in store. The truly sad part is, almost all of the impending suffering at the hands of the federal government was avoidable.
If you’re being lulled into choosing sides on this, and seeing Russia as the enemy (they are) and the Europeans as poor dupes (they are not), then you’ve missed the picture completely. You don’t have to see the director behind the curtain to know that the play takes place on a stage and is a crafted production. My take on the ad (and Putin’s move to shut off gas until sanctions are lifted) is that Russia is saying, “it is time to stop your silly games” to the Director. His/her/its gas will get cut off as well.
They are saying it kindly, and are turning the gas off while there is plenty of time for the Director to acknowledge that he/she/it has been utterly outmanuvered. Russia being good or bad isn’t the point as I see it. Nonetheless, they have acted with tremendous restraint. A more “bad” actor would have taken the bait by now and we wouldn’t be having this conversation because nuclear war had wiped out our electric grid.
I am not sure how to characterize the Europeans other than as poor dupes. They voted in the German leadership just last year. Their Green dream is catastrophic.

I think that this is part of a diabolical plan.
Siemens, the manufacturer of the turbines, removed 4 (or 5) of the turbines for repair, and sent them to Canada. Canada refused to send them back because of sanctions. Germany prevailed on Canada to send them back. Canada has sent them. Germany is holding them. It is unknown if Siemens in Canada actually repaired the turbines.
Russia has been pumping gas to Europe with ONE turbine. That one turbine with all the stress on it has started leaking and needs repair. Siemens said they can’t repair it on the site in Petersburg where the pumping station is located. Siemens signed off on the needed repair, but they haven’t made their sign-off public information, made it sound like it was Russia’s fault.
Germany has several choices. They can (via Siemens) return the repaired turbines to Russia. Germany could allow the Nordstream 2 pipeline to be used to pump endless gas to Germany and Europe. Germany refuses – because of sanctions they say.
Ukraine has cut off a pipeline from Russia through Ukraine. The pipeline to Hungary is working fine and they have bought enough from Russia for the winter.
So, there is no lack of options that will heat people’s homes and run businesses. But Germany has an ulterior motive in mind. When people are truly cold, when jobs are gone due to closing businesses, there will be deaths, extreme depression, and misery. It will cause a crisis. At that point, people will accept any alternative, even complete dictatorship and government control of everything.
I think that this is the WEF pulling strings. Russia is sitting back watching it, knowing what is going on.

FWIW our t-stat is programmed to run our ac down to 66/68 at night and resets to 76 at 0730.
Why you ask? Because it’s more efficient to run ac at night when cooler and the compression ratio is lower and also does a great job of dehumidification. The cooler flywheel mass of the house means the ac won’t start again until afternoon.
Larger buildings use ice bank cooling. Ice Thermal Storage. Large tanks of fluid are frozen when operating costs are lower often with lower off peak night rate. The ice carries the building through the day contingent on how it was sized.

Oh, I think my son learned the names of most of the countries in Europe and elsewhere. It’s good for geography. But, yea, strategy, not so much.
My son learned to play that game starting at 3 with mom and dad. By the time he was 5, it was each person for themselves.
