Long-term CTH readers might remember in 2014 when President Obama claimed U.S. families had been paying too little for electricity for too long. As soon as Joe Biden took office, he began implementing the Green New Deal energy policy that, (a) directly forces higher costs for energy; and (b) is now creating massive problems.
In July I noted my own electricity bill had jumped 28% in a single month. That bill was followed by another almost identical increase this month. A review of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July [Data Here] shows that nationally the same thing is happening. The year-over-year electricity price has increased 15.2%. However, worse still, the July increase alone was 1.9%, which figures to an annualized rate of 22.8%.
When the growth rate of monthly increase is exceeding the year-over-year result, that means future higher prices are coming. This is a serious problem that cannot be overstated. Already struggling with a doubling of gas prices, massive food price increases at the grocery store and the pain of all costs for goods far outpacing any rate of wage increase, this type of uncontrollable increase in price of electricity is going to hit the middle class hard.
Steve Cortes calls this the backside of the Biden created inflation hurricane. The backside of a hurricane is the worst because it hits from the opposite direction upon already weakened infrastructure.
The hurricane metaphor is apt because any increase in energy costs will be accompanied by the simultaneous arrival of another wave of food inflation, as the massive increases in field and crop prices start to feed into the food supply chain headed to our forks next month.
Making matters that much worse, Bloomberg is now reporting that 20 million households are now behind in their utility bills, specifically electricity bills, and the moratorium on shut offs has ended. [Paywall Article] Steve Cortes has written about the issue on his substack [Here].
One in six U.S. households, that is tens-of-millions of Americans, are now facing having their electricity turned off due to lack of payment. It is certainly understandable how this horrific outcome would happen. Joe Biden’s energy policies are destroying working class families with unsustainably higher prices.
20 million households is a catastrophic level of utility default. This is a serious issue with major social implications created by the desperation of those families. Middle- and lower-income families cannot survive this level of financial pressure.

I remember under President TRUMP after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 we got a refund from our electric company. It came in the form of credits against our bill and we got it in the winter months. It meant we got about 1.5 months free, and of course the bills going forward also reflected lower pricing. The bill specifically credited the Act as the reason for the lower pricing and refunds. This happened across the country too.
And now through this administrations polices you pay the credit back and then some.

I suspect the turtle’s bleak outlook is due to multiple reasons:
1) MAGA has caught onto his ploys thanks to CTH and Sundance and we’ve stopped feeding the machine (I, for one, cancelled my recurring donation to the RNC and subsequent pleas for $$ have been met with ugly responses to them)
2) MAGA is ascending and the turtle sees fewer and fewer “Republicans” he can manipulate, and therefore, his outlook on his future is dim
3) The GOP (Grand Old Party) is under remodel and reconstruction. MAGA is in the process of “Build Back Better”, which is clearing out the dead or otherwise rotten wood, cleaning up the debris and nasty smelly chips and shards of old rusted nails, etc., while shoring up the foundation and the roof with new timbers (see all our new MAGA folks?)
4) Exposing old hidden rot to the sunlight. Sunlight is a disinfectant, and it’s painful to the maggots and slime – it kills them.

We have the same problem up here with Sparkle Socks….he wants to ship our NatGas overseas, but shuts down our coal-fired generating plants, so we have been forced into having all our eggs in one basket – and the moron is selling our basket.
Wait til they send a week long deep freeze and shut off all electric power and natural gas (to prevent a blackout 🙄) as happened in Feb 2021 in Texas. Supposed to be “rolling blackouts” yet there was no rolling at all. Over 72 hrs of sub freezing temps. That was just test run for a widespread area.
Hopefully most did the smart thing and refilled in the spring. I know many people in New England who did, but also many who didn’t have the ability to and have about 10% in their tanks today. They’ll freeze at some point this winter if they don’t leave.
A normal sized tank of oil in a northern home will not see you through the winter. Depending on the size of your home and how cold you keep it you can burn a thousand gallons or more.

I am a landlord in NH owning 24 apartments. My tenants are low income and are struggling to make ends meet, even those receiving subsidized housing. Now with the COVID rental relief funds coming to an end after my tenants have received their limit of 18 months paid GOVERNMENT rent, they are facing even more hardship. I have felt all along that one of the biggest factors impacting tenants would be the expected unaffordable increase in utilities. This month EVERSOURCE the primary NH electric utility Company raised their rates by over 100%. My personal electric bill of $202.75 for the month June increased to $519.19 for the month of July. Even accounting for A/C, this is an astronomical increase with no end in sight for the increases. I can’t help but think that this energy crisis is a deliberate effort to bring this country to its knees. Hard times are not coming; THEY ARE HERE!

The temperature here is in the 90s and we set the thermostat at 78 and the wife complains about being cold.
Still, my KWh rate is still around $0.11 . I belong to a rural cooperative in GA. Sometimes there is a small additional charge which I assume is because they need to buy extra power from other suppliers.

This is crazy. Folks with resource ($$$) will continue to pay the higher costs of energy, and be comfortable. Damn, we have 20 million people behind in electricity, and no telling how many more have gone from having just a bit of extra change at the end of the month, to around 1/2 the nation barely making ends meet on a daily basis.
Yet instead of doing something for Americans who really deserve and need it, The lawmakers are lining the pockets of students, illegals and foreign countries. Probably way over 90% of these people are using it for the luxuries that many Americans couldn’t afford in the past, and now will never be able to afford.
One store that we have to go to for painkillers I always loudly announce at the cashier that it would be so great for the environment if they would stock enough that I wouldn’t have to spend gas every few days but now I am telling my husband that the people who comment on what he buys and how much are warning him, soon they will take action so we would be wise not to flaunt our purchases – buy some, put it in the trunk – go back and get the rest. This started with the COVID – even if I am leaving some on the shelf for others people have to comment as if they would prefer us to spend time and gas coming to the store daily and just get one item at a time.. . . . grrrrrr!

Never buy more than you can afford to pay off when the bill comes. That way you’re using their money instead of the other way around. Use the time between buying and paying to save whatever that amount is in order to pay it off!
If you have trouble keeping track of credit purchases, maybe switch to a prepaid card. It will stop working when the budgeted money runs out. Better than paying interest and late fees.

60 year old friend lost her job due to the wuflu. She is 2 months behind on her rent. Her electricity is scheduled to be turned off this Friday. She owns her truck, but the front brakes are so bad she should not be driving it at all and doesn’t have the cash to have them fixed.
So far the pantry she started building a year ago has helped her during this dry spell, but it appears “they” don’t plan on having the dry spell ever end.
Is now the time we’ve been planning for? Is now the time to have friends move onto our property with us? Or do we wait until the entire world goes mad?

Encourage her to apply for ERAP. She can get up to 3 months rent paid. May solve a problem for a little while until something can be figured out. It’s federal grant money for rental relief.
I would say yes, now is the time.
Personally, take your friends in, and help them rebuild a nest egg. It sounds like they are already on the edge of insolvency, and need to get a handle on expenses (first rule of holes). It’s better to cut costs than slow burn until the bank takes it all.
Maybe have them share food costs, or make bulk meals to save money (we slow cook pork shoulder a lot). Or split chores. My MIL moved in with us after she lost her job before retirement, and we’ve worked out cost splitting ever since. But that’s how we’re going to get through the next years, in spite of our central government.
This is how they are going to “get rid of” single family households. Just what they want. Will open up homes for others. Equity, you know.

I live literally at the end of the line. Anything that happens upstream tends to cause us protracted outages. In the average year, I lose the contents of the deep freeze once, and we usually total between 10-12 days without power throughout the year. In the age of the rolling blackouts and brownouts, we’ve seen substantially more. During the unpleasantness of 2021, when the grid failed(twice,) we had one span of four days and one span of five days without power with two days between. And we always pay our bills. I suspect the worst trouble will begin in earnest when not only non-payers are being shut off, but payers who’ve lost power for the fifteen time in two weeks finally lose their cool.
Hey, I’m an end-of-the-liner myself. Ice storms are dreaded, of course, but thankfully rare. However the last few years… too many outages for no apparent reason. Aging infrastructure, maybe, or negligence in keeping the overhead lines clear, or something else entirely? A lot of frustration builds up when you pay more and more and MORE….
I have been noticing a lot of irregular outages and unstable incoming power supply voltages on mains since Biden got in… almost like brownouts which damage high dollar equipment, slow production in manufacturing plants, etc. Something isn’t adding up with all this…. BS.
Wait until they can’t run the hospitals.
Er, seems like they’re almost there. Last year or so I know multiple people, including myself that was locked to a hospital bed and forced to lay in my own defecation and then denied proper clean-up. They think they can get away with it because we’re too ashamed to mention. No we are NOT! Disgusting and dangerous! Extra antibiotics will not solve forever!
They be going bankrupt shortly. Too many jabbed patients needing serious interventions.
One winter I decided to conserve on heat costs.
Bought fairly heavy plastic sheeting and enclosed a small area where my sofa, chair is and heated this area with a space heater.
I bought long Johns, sock liners, silk glove liners, wool socks and layered. I set my furnace at 55 and got my energy costs down dramatically.
I found that when I was in the kitchen the stove heat and hot dishwater kept me warm.
With a big down comforter and a blanket underneath, the temp was fine for sleeping.
The only part that was tiring was bending down to get under the plastic to go to other parts of the house.
If things get crazy, I’ll probably do this again this winter.
My parents used to put a blanket up in the open doorways to close up the kitchen in some winters past. Used the (gas) oven for heat. We always slept upstairs in the unheated second floor (winters in southern Illinois can get mighty cold!). Below zero is not fun. Lots of blankets and more than one to a bed!

I think it has already been mentioned in these comments, but to repeat it…
The cost of doing business with these costs of energy means that any business is going to have to raise prices or reduce expenses to offset rising energy costs.
I work at a small town liquor store part time, so I am already seeing some changes being made there. Between the costs of goods going up, due to higher delivery charges due to fuel costs, there is now going to also be costs of electricity going up, which WILL get passed on to consumers in the costs of goods in addition to the cost of the goods due to delivery rates going up.
Look at this happening across all sectors of consumer goods & not just liquor or beer & related items.
It is going to happen everywhere someone has a business.
So not only home costs go up, but business costs go up & you can be assured that it will get passed on to the customer.
The current PTB are causing a “whirlpool” of economic damage, spiraling the economy into free fall towards a lower standard of living, or even worse to more & more of the population. More than just the US.
This will cause even more civil strife.
Winter has a tendency to “slow things” as far as outdoor activities, but when your home( or workplace) is getting cold & leaning towards being cold as the outside temps, folks tempers Will Rise & they will find that they can make heat by gathering together to make their positions known, IF ya know what I mean.
Those who are living well & think they are not going to be affected by this economic damage, may find that there are those folks who are not in such good shape wanting some of what the more well to do have, and would have no qualms about taking what they want.
Most likely have seen on the news about “flash mobs” taking things from stores.
Pushed hard enough & they will move on to homes where the heat is on & they want to get warm too.
I am not advocating for anything violent, but I am thinking that there will be some violence by those who think they are getting the short end of things, before things get better, if things continue as they are into the Winter..
People who are hungry & cold, and are at “the end of their rope” economically, do not think the same as someone who is doing OK for themselves, are well fed, warm, and it is apparent they are doing better than those who are doing without.
The PTB might want to consider that.

Sad to say, but there will be trouble if things continue the way they seem to be trending.

The poop is almost on the fan….. Biden is running the economy into the ditch and downward into the abyss.

My eclectic bill went up by a third last month and another 10% over that this month. Good thing they shuttered our nuke at a cost of billions.
Every time I go food shopping and get shocked by a drastic, sudden price increase, I want to shout as loudly as I can, “Let’s Go Brandon,” or maybe the original form. The fact that this is all deliberate and they are making it worse still makes me get as hot as I have ever been. I would call up my Democrat Congresswoman, Castor the Disaster, and berate her if I thought it would do any good. For now, I will send money directly to Republican Senate candidates, but I am beyond livid.
Up to 20 million homes that might be able to break free from Government propaganda. You might call me callous, but this shouldn’t have happened. But we, as a country, fooled ourselves and betrayed our way of life for ‘ease of use’ from these jackals who wield power like a mace. It’s a cold feeling to ponder how things should’ve been different.
Then again, 5 million homes are facing foreclosure over the next couple of months. That’s out of 13 million homes that are behind on their mortgages.
And no one’s talking about the doubling of natural gas prices in the past month.
