In mid-May of this year President Sauli Niinistö stated his decision for his country to join NATO was a matter of needing to choose sides, “what we see now, Europe, the world, is more divided. There’s not very much room for ‘non-aligned,’ in-between. So that was also what we are thinking,” he said [link]
The next day, May 16th, Turkish President Recep Erdogan, a preexisting NATO member, said Turkey would block the application of Sweden and Finland from joining NATO until their conditions and terms were accepted [link]. Two days later, May 19th, Joe Biden, flanked by Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson (again at the White House), said the two countries would “make NATO stronger.” [link]
On Tuesday of this week Turkey removed their block of Sweden and Finland from joining NATO, and on Wednesday Joe Biden agreed to sell Turkey 40 Lockheed Martin-made F-16 fighters and nearly 80 modernization kits for its existing warplanes:

Finland now represents an additional 1,340 km (830 mi) long direct border with Russia. The border runs mostly through uninhabited taiga forests and sparsely populated rural areas. Two weeks ago, June 9, 2020, Finland announced their “government plans to amend border legislation to allow the building of barriers on its eastern frontier with Russia, […] in a move to strengthen preparedness against hybrid threats amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” [link]
The NATO alliance has now done a great deal of logistical and strategic placement in advanced preparation for the next phase of the conflict with Russia. Notice where the emphasis is in the statements from Joe Biden and Recep Erdogan (emphasis mine):

“The Russia and Ukraine conflict and the negative developments with regards to taking out of the grain from the Ukrainian ports, as well as the developments involving oil and natural gas, require all of us to work together in order to settle the disputes once and for all,” Erdogan said.
He added that “there are countries deprived of the grains, and we will open corridors, and we will allow them to have access to the grains that they so need.”
Biden concluded a media availability by saying to Erdogan, “It’s in large [part] because of your leadership. Thank you. I really mean it. Thank you.” (read more)

Until a few years ago, Turkish aerospace companies manufactured important components for the F-35. The fact that Turkey wants F-16s and not F-35s is a further indication that the F-35 is a piece of junk.
if the f16’s are not “dumbed down” (big if on that), the choice is obvious….an entire fleet of capable aircraft that pilots can easily and quickly adapt to and fly in combat mission with little overhead…compared to maybe 2 f35 that most certainly would be “dumbed down” that no pilot in turkey could be rapidly trained to fly much less have the necessary infrastructure to maintain at a readiness state that has any meaning. (the f35 is a very capable weapon, but it requires an blinding amount of talent, time and highly trained and skilled people to just keep them in the air. Turkey does not have this in place.

Again, I am not suggesting turkey (and other countries ) will be refused f35’s, but there is some rationale to deselecting that platform at this point in time (at or very near a very hot and heavy conflict environment) for low cost, highly capable, high volume easy to train and fly aircraft. It’s been observed that a fully geared up f16 can fly well over 100 sorties a month at approx. 1/400th the cost and time and resources of the f35. You lose just one f35 due to equipment or resource problems and you have effectively just lost what that same money and committment could be accomplished by over a dozen f16’s.
My curiosity is simple: are they nextgen f16’s..of the same type for instance sold to SA?

Against a marginally capable hostile power, the F-35 is overkill. Russia is only marginally capable, so the F-16 is more than adequate for Turkey’s needs.
It’s actually an outdated fighter plane. The F-15 and F-18’s are actually better. But you’re right. If all you require is the capability of the F-16, then it’s a good deal for Turkey.

I watched a documentary some years ago that compared the F16/F18 with IIRC the Su-27. The biggest difference between them is that Russia’s planes are designed to operate with few ground personnel and in a dirty environment. Like a war zone. The US planes however needed a clean runway and maybe 8-10 ground/logistics personnel to keep them flying. The Russian pilot interviewed joked that all the Russians would need to do is drop small junk like stone or ball bearings on the runways to disable the US planes.

Concur. While at a Turkish airfield, mechanics didn’t have ear protection and most were deaf. Maintenance left a cruise box full hearing protection for them. Their pilots challenge our to a B ball game…Turkish pilots were winded in 3 minutes due to all smoking.

The US deleted Turkey from the F-35 program, orders for F-35s as well as Turkey manufacturing part of the central section of the aircraft, engine maintenance etc when Turkey bought the Russian S-400 air defence missiles.
The fact that Turkey can no longer buy F-35s is no reflection on what they thought of it. Whilst it has problems as an aircraft it is not junk from the US’s perspective given its role in financial engineering.

Turkey builds the F-16 at Tusuas, in plants that have existed since 1986. Turkey has the ability and has built the latest version of the F-16 and these upgrade kits are the latest Block Upgrade from Lockheed.
Tusas also has ties to Israeli IAI related to upgrades to their F-4E, RF-4 and F-16.
As for the the F-35, that is a political reliability issue and Tusas does not build any classified critical components, if any after the Russian SAM deal..
The Turks are not receiving aircraft but receiving 80 US upgrade kits for the latest Block upgrade that will be applied by Turkish Tusas. Depending on the composition of the Kit, Turkish industries may be able to assemble the components for more kist.

I’m less than that (I bet less than 10 miles from Andrews Airbase and have been listening to F-16’s and F-35’s fly over almost daily for months. I know the difference in speed and sound and height as they come in rapid succession as opposed to the flights out of National Airport. I’ve kept it quietly to myself but have and am very scared. My husband doesn’t understand the significance of this imho.

Putin has said that he would not target the Ukrainian people. He has tried to open humanitarian corridors for all sorts of reasons, from people to grains, etc. My understanding is that it is the Ukrainian forces and Zelenskyy who would not allow them.
Putin even addressed the peoples in the West very early on saying we were not his targets. I doubt many people saw that video. But I did.
I suspect (hope) if the worst happened, it would not be the American heartlands that would be targeted, though should it come to the worst loss of life of ordinary citizens couldn’t be avoided.
In any event, we as citizens of this country have no say in what will happen. The same as those European citizens in WWI and WWII.

In order to do so, Russia has attacked the Ukrainian military that has been attacking the Donbas citizens for 8 years. Citizens have been provided humanitarian corridors out of the area by Russia, as you wrote. The Ukraine military has attacked and even closed these corridors. The Ukrn military targets schools! They launched merciless attacks on civilian targets in Donetsk June 13 this year.
As Russia secures a city or village, it begins to repair and rebuild the destruction that the Ukraine military wrought.

In 2005, I attended the International Tree Nut Congress in Las Vegas….there were about six hundred attendees, representing the companies of the world doing business in nuts. Turkey grows approximately 70% of the world’s Hazelnuts. In 2004, Turkey had a freeze and produced very few Hazelnuts. They also reneged on many sales contracts with brokers in Europe that year. When a Dutch broker got up and castigated the Turks in front of the assemblage of attendees, for breaking sales contracts, the entire room rose up and gave the guy a standing ovation for calling out the Turks.
Another German broker friend many years previously, had been burned on a contract for Turkish Hazelnuts. The seller told my friend, “Allah made him do it”….
