“When the main holiday season starts in Europe and the US, fuel demand will rise,” Fatih Birol told Der Spiegel. “Then we could see shortages — for example, in diesel, petrol or kerosene, particularly in Europe.”
Birol also told the German newspaper that the energy crisis now underway will be more severe and longer-lasting than the oil price shocks of the 1970s, given it’s applying pressure on three fronts.
“Back then it was just about oil,” he said in the interview published Tuesday. “Now we have an oil crisis, a gas crisis and an electricity crisis simultaneously.”
Oil prices spiked in 1973 and 1979 as the Yom Kippur War and the Iranian Revolution interrupted Middle Eastern crude exports. Geopolitical events have hit the market again in 2022, as western nations impose sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. (read more)

Before the Holiday weekend the price here was $4.49-4.53. Today it is $4.70.
Typically the local stations jack the price going into a 3 day weekend holiday with expected driving to bump up.
I’m thinking they changed tactics a little and went for larger bump post weekend for optics – knowing the bigger bump will reach all buyers and make up for the typical mini surge profiteering.
Here in Calfornia it is between $6 and $8/gallon and will probably be at $10/gal in a few months.

There was one under Nixon and a second one under Carter. I remember the 2nd one vividly, since I had just gone off to college and struggled to get fuel to drive from Berkeley to Los Angeles and back to visit my parents. I had to leave and return on odd numbered days and refuel at least once on each leg of the trip and many gas stations would have no fuel on I-5.
I packed food and water to survive a couple of days, in case I had to stop at a gas station and wait 2 days for a fuel truck to arrive at a gas station in the middle of nowhere (it was just endless farm fields back then).
It was common for students to miss class, because they couldn’t travel or got stuck in the middle of nowhere with their vehicle out of fuel.
Then there was the rampant fuel thefts, especially near the university. You had to get locking gas caps and anti-siphoning devices to put down the fuel fill hole.
There ‘answer’ to gasoline rationing AND $7/ gal gas is ‘simple’, at least to THEM;

Gas was somewhere around $0.50 per gallon when I got my driver’s license. Shortly afterward, we moved to CA and regular jumped to ~$1.50+ in high school.
There are no coincidences and no conspiracies… It’s like “Dejas Vu” all over again.
I remember when gas jumped, was paying 25.9, a price it had generally been locally long before I could drive, and then suddenly it doubled within a year. When I was working in oil and gas in the late 70’s, and driving a diesel, the picture below was accurate and inspired me to buy diesel pickups for my own business because, then, diesel was cheaper than gas and the trucks got better fuel mileage and lasted longer.
You might recognize the characters in the picture, that would indicate the year…
My dad was driving a diesel VW Rabbit at the time for the same reasons. He still occasionally rants about Carter’s “Energy Based Pricing” where he decreed that diesel will cost more than gasoline, because it contains more energy per gallon than gasoline.
That killed the diesel passenger car in the USA to this day.
Diesels are now actually cleaner than gasoline vehicles, but almost nobody knows that in the USA, since the powers that be want Americans to drive inefficient gasoline powered vehicles instead.

Would be harder to regulate today in contrast to 1974 when gas station attendants were out at the pump islands all day and pumped the gas. Who would oversee tag numbers as customers got in line? Plus, we were a nice society then and most people would honor the system. Now?
One option would be pay at pump would be eliminated and face to face would take over and, today, most of the stations and truck stops I go to bristle with security cameras at the pump islands and I have no doubt the systems are capable of optically scanning both people and license plates. Additionally, the state could issue ‘ration’ EBT-type cards that cashiers would record in addition to payment.
Would outlaw systems and hacks occur? Likely. Same as the attendants back in the day pumping more than the ration for friends and family. People find a way. I’d expect to see more red diesel in OTR tanks as well.
The further society disintegrates the more creative things will become. Eventually, gasoline acquisition here may come to this, recently seen in Mexico in real life, with a nice boom at the end….

I was a new HS grad with an 8 year old gas guzzler (1965 Plymouth Fury III). I was making minimum wage at the time and could barely afford to buy gas to go to work.
I can imagine what it must be like today for our less fortunate citizens. Because I have been there.
It cost me $120 to fill the truck with diesel last night. When is the national nightmare going to end? Two years ago we were a net exporter of energy. Today the gov is talking about gas lines and rationing.

I was working in law enforcement in 1973 when the gas crisis was in full swing. It caused a spike in gasoline theft and other assorted crimes. On one ocassion I was dispatched to a gas station because a dispute had broken out. There was the usual long gas line and I was directed to a man and a woman who were involved in a heated argument. It seems the male took the locking gas cap off of his car and put it on the woman’s car. Before doing this, he dropped the gas cap key into her gas tank. She could not fill up her tank.
The male driveer claimed that the woman saw a slight opening in the front of the line and cut in front of others. She really didn’t have a reasonable explanation for that accusation. I fact she tacitly admitted that it was true. Additionally, others waiting in line backed up the story of the male driver. And they too were hot…
I separated the parties and told the woman to leave the scene. I gave her my personal information and told her that I was taking NO action. She was pissed of course, but she also caused a near riot. One of my first encounters with a ‘Karen’. There would be more over the course of a long career.
