My father was a combat infantryman in WWII, ETO. Had a dim view of the US Army, Russia, and Europe in general for the rest of his life. He figured the average German he was fighting was just a poor SOB doing his duty, was a POW, and saw the way the Germans treated the Russians and a little of the flip side when they were liberated by the Canadians. He felt that any war should be ended as decisively and violently as possible, didn’t like Korea or Vietnam, and was not happy when I went overseas in OIF.
He’s gone now but he’d be mad as Hell that we were getting involved in a Ukraine vs Russia tussle that has, as he’d say, “half assed political BS” written all over it.
He distrusted big Government and the military industrial complex, hated communism, and loved his country and told me war was the last resort but once entered had to pursued relentlessly and to the hilt. He also believed that only Congress could declare war, and that they and their children should all immediately be put in infantry replacement companies once the vote was taken.
