When Joe Biden took to the microphones in October to announce, “a series of public and private commitments to move more goods faster, and strengthen the resiliency of our supply chains, by moving towards 24/7 operations at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach,” the supply chain objective was to increase the productivity of the ports. However, data released for November [SEE HERE] and now December, show exactly the opposite.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited both ports recently. Both ports, along with Oakland, also made the arriving ships remain further offshore than when the October announcement was made. They are hiding the ships.
For some unknown reason the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) has delayed reporting of December; but the Port of Long Beach (POLB) just released their data {LINK}. What the statistics show is that less cargo is being handled now, than it was when the 24/7 port operations announcement was made:
The purpose of telling the ships to await their port time in a queue farther offshore is transparent. The Biden administration wants to give the illusion they eliminated the bottleneck of container ships. Out of sight is out of mind.
Operation ‘Hide the Ships’ allows the administration to make claims about port efficiencies and increased productivity that are abjectly false. The data from the two months after the announcement shows less container offloading and onloading happened in November and December than happened in the prior month of October when the new initiatives were announced.
Many of the high-end canned cat foods (wet foods) come from Thailand processing, and we are told they are sitting in containers offshore right now.

Thankfully, we follow this site, and were much better prepared than most. We anticipated supply issues, and actually had our Christmas shopping done by last June. Therefore, we never were caught looking for the hottest item, and did not go into a store for anything other than necessities during the holiday shopping season. My only pulse on how bad things were was to listen to the complaining of many people who were caught off guard. It was definitely worse for them.
I did the same when shopping for my grand daughters Christmas gifts.
BUT my recliner broke on the last weekend in August and we ordered a new one from a company that we thought was American made. The recliner ( not a special order one, just generic) has been stuck in traffic past two promised delivery dates, Nov 14th and now Feb of this year.
We went ahead after the first failed delivery and bought an American made recliner, a Jackson Catnapper. We will still get the Flex Steel, which I love, but it will be the last one I get unless it is on the floor and I can get it immediately.

It is dwell fees on containers. The government response is to charge penalties for containers that sit too long. There is no point in unloading a ship faster if the government is going to fine you. So, unloading ships faster only builds the problem of fines if there are not enough trucks to move the cargo out.
So, if truckers need vax to drive, there is no point in unloading ships with containers that cannot move.
Probably why Trump beat Biden in container numbers for both Nov and Dec at Long Beach before team Biden got involved.

So here’s a question, beyond the number of containers loaded and unloaded, how many are backlogged on port property. They can unload from ships all they want, but are they actually being shipped out to the warehouses or are they just being piled up.
My thought is that they’re just piling up and that is what is slowing down the offloading from ships even though more man-hours are being ostensibly spent unloading.
Good question. It is fascinating to get some idea how these supply chains actually work. I have never known or thought about how products get to stores. And I wonder if there are two steps to the warehousing…..like do these containers go to a big central holding warehouse and then out to an area warehouse?
The harbor dept owns most everything, there is little privately owned waterfront. The big shipping companies lease terminals from the harbor department.
The harbors have threatened container dwell fees for containers that sit too long. They are claiming great inroads in moving containers off property. I see % but no idea what that % equates to in number of containers.
The shippers probably want to avoid fees because once installed it may stay there for the greater good…
Have no way to tell if off port property means it is on a way to a warehouse or being dumped on another lot.

Before Newsom’s diesel environmental mandates there was most likely enough money for a trucker from Oklahoma to pick up a container at the ports but now since his truck is banned he cannot enter California. Now there are truckers that could haul the containers from the ports to Nevada, but since the cost of fuel and living is so high in California, he would charge over half the money making it economically unfeasible for the Oaklahoma trucker.

Not that I expect our pretender in chief actually accomplished anything, but aren’t the ports pretty heavily unionized? I’m not surprised it dropped for the holidays in those months.
Even as intermodal ports, U.S. ports have been doing this for decades, longer than I’ve been alive and pre-intermodal, as long as the Republic has been in existence. The ports have always been the ports. Labor has always been labor. Materials have always been materials.
We can reflect on the last time such product shortages were so widespread. When was that? We’ve been importing stuff from overseas for centuries. IDK, were supplies short during the Depression? Money was short; purchasing power was short.
In my lifetime the only times I’ve ever seen empty shelves in local grocery stores was when they were going out of business and selling off the remaining stock. The most recent time was after a Walmart superstore came to the nearest rural community and a large regional chain closed their store of 40 years; it was bizarre but expected, kinda like walking through a cemetery.
This is the test I repeatedly put to what’s been going on, Covid, vaccinations, masks, products, jobs, you name it. I look back over seven decades of actually living and try to find some similar examples. It’s been tough.
