The trade narrative shifts dramatically when trade flows are decomposed into energy and non-energy components. We have a $45 billion trade surplus with Canada.
Last year, Canadian exports of energy products (oil, natural gas, power) to the U.S amounted to nearly $170 billion, or almost 1/3 of total shipments. Canadian oil sources are critical to U.S. energy security.

Canada would sell their oil elsewhere and we would buy it elsewhere. It’s a global market.
Oil from Canada is cheap and delivered by pipe line. We must import around 8 million barrels of oil a day. Most cones from Canada and Mexico.
Even tho we are producing record amounts of oil. We cant refine it as it comes out of the ground. It is too light and sweet for our refineries to handle safely. US oil must be mixed with heavy Sour Crude to lower the flash point so it can be refined without blowing up the refinery.
If we lost cheap Canadian and Mexican oil delivered by pipe and rail. We would have to import more expensive oil by tanker ships driving costs up a lot.
“Canada” really means Alberta here; they would need to get it to Vancouver and coastal BC, like Washington and Oregon is full of greenies who oppose anything oil. Aurminer is correct that oil isn’t fungible. Can’t just swap in West Texas Intermediate or Brent Sweet.
